I liked the look of Fergus Greene and he was just delisted from Hawthorn, would be a good depth player I hope we get him.

Pretty unlikely to pick up a 25yo player delisted by a bottom 4 team, who has played 16 games across two clubs in 5 seasons, I would have thought.

I wouldn’t be holding onto that hope too tight.

Yeah I see that point but I am a fan of this guy is a nice in between size as well for depth behind Henry and Rohan. Probably won’t happen just wishful thinking.

I like your thinking but if I was to be taking one of the hawks delisted players it would be Bramble in a heart beat.

For anyone who had spare time on their hands (And with the goal of lowering their collective IQ) feel free to watch Fox Footy's 'Trading Day' on Kayo.

We know footy media is a crackpot at the best of times, but just listening to Kingy is hilarious.

With bass in the voice, and full of bravado, he goes "I have a huge value on top 30 picks, they are what wins you premierships. Since 2017, the Cats only have 5 remaining on their list".

Now David, I know you are an analytics guy, and maybe your boy Daniel Hoyne has been fudging the numbers over at your holy grail of 'Champion Data', but bare with me.

I didn't major in mathematics. In fact, it's a subject I struggled with greatly, but I'm pretty sure that was 7? With it about to become 9?

Of course, there's the argument to include Jack Bowes (Pick 10, 2016) & Brandan Parfitt (Pick 26, 2016), because why should we stick to the arbitrary number of 2017?

But let's play Kingy's game. For reference, in that timeframe, that's more than the struggling minnows known as Hawthorn, or the once feared West Coast Eagles.

At the end of the day, the whole conversation is academic. It's not about the picks, it's about the players.

I'd like a few more Tyson Stengles' & Jack Henrys' over another Darcy Lang...but we can't play that game, because Kingy said so.

Another Brad Close & Gryan Miers over the next Billie Smedts? Sign me up!! But again, that's not how this game works.

So David, if you're going to go after us, and get paid a gazillion sheckles to do so...Can you just get it right?

The age of some of our prime movers, the youngsters not yet in their prime, the injury bug hitting a veteran core....All very reasonable points of concern leading into season 2024.

But no, we'll stick with the arbitrary and factually incorrect points. That always works.

I for one look forward to the day where we have 25 top 30 picks on our list.

Doesn't matter if any of them can play football or not, that's not the point. It's the picks that matter, don't you see?!?

So not counting trade ins... A bit silly considering what players like Bruhn were drafted for and traded for. Would we have been better using the pick on Darcy Jones?

He wasn’t counting Bruhn or Ollie Henry. I think the point he was making was that our top 30 drafting since 2017 hasn’t been good.

The players picked in that range that are no longer on our list:

Fogarty (22)
Kelly (24)
Clark (15)
Stephens (16)

So we’ve actually kept more than we’ve lost, and two of the four we have lost are good players, we just didn’t retain them.

That's kinda disingenuous though, isn't it?

Fogarty leaving got us S. Higgins, and wanted a fresh start (fail on both counts)

TK leaving got us Jez Cameron, James Willis (Future 2nd back from Jez deal) and Cooper Stephens

Jordan Clark leaving got us Toby Conway and collateral for Ollie Henry

Cooper leaving helped us land Ollie Henry + keep our Future 1st

So there's been hits and misses with our drafting, but Cameron won us a flag due to drafting TK - and Clark very well may have helped us find our next 10+ year ruckman.

Stephens is a fail, Fogarty is ok and jury is still out on Willis. Ollie Henry looking like a massive success. All in all though, I'd say we've done very well from our drafting.

Very shallow analysis as per usual from King.

Is it perfect? No. Is it catastrophic and 'cliff worthy'? Also no.

Not to mention, that having 5 top 30 picks that are decent in a period of relative success, is no fail either - considering how little access we had to the top end. It's essentially 1 a year after 2017. Every 2nd round pick should fall into the mid 30's - failing King's arbitrary 'system', so would never count like it would for other teams - given our success.

But god forbid King would ever do that sort of analysis.

I don't like how Jhye Clark hasn't re-signed...
I hope we hold pick 8, trading it should only happen if North (Sanders) and WCE (Curtin) is available.. I would only accept a future first and an end of r1 pick though.. It sounds overs, but if your trading into a future draft you can't assume it will be a top 10 pick. A sweetener needs to come back as well..

Nothing to worry about. Most would say his year was a fair way below expectations. He and his manager are most likely anticipating a much improved 2024 where he'll be able to demand more $$ or years on his contract offer.

If he wanted to pick at us ...picking 30 was probably good divider.

Its not like we have had a heap of early R1...most would be in the teens ..which meant our r2 was past 30.

30 seems a bit arbitory... I cant see the difference between 28 and 32 for example.

I get early picks ..single figure picks ..as they generally belong to the highest grade of potential kids... and we just have not had that many of them to draft. Bar GC deal.. we would not have Clark on our list. So to exclude guys like Bruhn seems agenda setting more than being insightful.

Tbh looking at that list

Kelly is elite
Clark is very good and would easily be in our best 18
Fogarty just played in a prelim (still don’t really rate him)
Cooper.. spud.

They actually aren’t bad picks at all
 
Going by Macks interview on Trade Radio after the close of trade week i can see us drafting Sanders with Pick 8 or it will be traded to North or West Coast for multiple back end 1sts or 1st this year and a future 1st

If we turn Pick 8 into either one of WCE or North Future 1st we could be looking at a top 5 pick next year
