"Picture if you will.... "

It is time for Pick 7.
GWS Giants are up.
If Sanders, Caddy and O'Sullivan are all still available.
Would you/we trade a Future First (FF2024) to the Giants for any of these prospects?

Thus insuring both a Caddy & O'Sullivan combo... or Caddy & Sanders... or Sanders & O'Sullivan.

Was 2023 just a blimp or the beginning of a slide?

"Next stop Willoughby... "

Rod GCL Serling ?

I think its more likely to trade out of R1 ..for the right package of picks including a future pick ...than for us to trade next years picks into this year.

The word REASONABLE in the ruck statement should highlight the difference between who's delisted and those that need to be traded for.
The scrapheap is there for those who are... on the scrapheap lol.
I understand u might find that elusive diamond.
But they are like unicorns these days as everyone out there has had the microscope well and truly put on them.

I had a look at some of the better-performed ruckmen (total hitouts) this year to see where they came from. Interestingly, quite a few were mature-age signings:
  • Oscar McInerney - mature rookie at 22yrs
  • Rowan Marshall - mature rookie at 21yrs
  • Ned Reeves - mature SSP signing at 21yrs
  • Darcy Cameron - mature age draftee at 21yrs
James Rendell (21yrs) put up pretty good VFL numbers this year, particularly in the second half of the season. Kobe Annand is from the Geelong region. And I still think Brayden Crossley (24yrs) should be on a list somewhere.

I agree. Most of the talk has been about us trading with Adelaide, which would mean trading back/out. I haven't heard any rumours about trading up, and I personally wouldn't want us to.

If anyone wants a stark reminder of how some drafts just suck, have a look at this redraft of the 2012 cohort.

Wood top 10. Just have a look at who was late in the first round. Guys like Thurlow, Gleeson, Hrovat. Even the redrafted top 10 is nothing to write home about

That's my guess on how this year's draft will pan out:
  • Some solid Whitfield, Stringer, Macrae, Wines options in the top 10 - e.g. Walter, Reid, McKercher, Sanders.
  • Some early picks that could be busts like O'Rourke, Toumpas, Mayes - e.g. Duursma, Watson, Caddy.
  • And basically no quality after pick 15 - if you take father-sons and rookie upgrades out of the 2012 draft, from pick 15 onwards you're left with Grundy (194 games), McIntosh (168) and Membrey (160).

CHAWKTS are the Cats a chance to grab Van De Heuvel with a late pick as a close to ready to go replacement down back?
Firstly are you able to let me know how to tag someone!

Secondly, I think the answer is yes. Certainly I hope the Cats give VDH a chance on the list. I would even do it on main list (2 year) rather than rookie. He would start as purely a backup. Frankly as a good VFL player who could play as a “break glass in emergency” situation.

But I would not at all be shocked if he went bang after spending full time working on his game. Certainly it is a possibility. He has attributes. His big deficiency IMHO is his disposal and decision making. Can hold your breath with him sometimes coming out of backline. But how much of that is VFL system up the ground and how much is him just learning or confidence who knows.

I love his attack on the ball. Good size and good hands

Again, unless we have a couple of long term injuries in that part of the ground (like we did in 2023), he will still play VFL. But to me that was what Sav was. He is not at SAV’s development (understandable given Sav had 7-8 years in AFL system) and probably not the same athlete - but I think a good back up and someone who has upside.

My biggest fear is that there is another club out there who needs a back up and picks him earlier than we do (I expect he is our last pick?). I will be watching and wishing him well on the second draft night

I am overseas…but I thought I read overnight my time that we have sorted the remaining contracts?

Hardie and Murdoch have signed for 2024 but Flynn has been let go?

I am happy for both Hardie and Murdoch. Not 100% sure either of them make it but they deserve another year. Great attitudes and showed some things in certain games.

Flynn just never got a crack at it

People are clearly bored in the off season and happy to make some fairly extreme assumptions.

Jeremy Cameron goes in for shoulder surgery and everyone's excited that he's getting it repaired ready for pre season.

Toby Conway goes in for a routine and pre planned procedure following previous surgery, and some in here are pulling out the gun ready to put the poor bloke out of his misery.

Crikey
I agree. I have confidence in Toby getting his body right. He does the work and is just one of those young blokes who needs his supporting body parts (legs and feet) to develop before having a real crack.

I am disappointed for him in terms of the latest (albeit I think minor) setback. Agree it was routine but not sure it was pre planned (they were hoping it wasn’t needed - he was due on the holiday with the other young boys…Max, Ollie x2, Knevitte, Bruhn - but had to pull out last minute for the procedure).

I understand that other than that he (and Clark) have been putting in a power of strength and fitness work so I am hoping that 2024 is a new chapter for both of them in terms of building into their careers.

Having said all of that I assume Cats will still look to recruit a back up ruckman so they can manage Toby and Stanley in the event of an injury to one. Unless they really believe Scratcher could play that back up role (I am not convinced). VFL could do with a back up ruckman too - so one of these cheap journeymen isnt terrible to add to list? Maybe they keep a spot or two for SPP/Mid season to use if needed?

CHAWKTS to tag someone it’s as simple as typing

@ Username - just without the space between the two

After you type the @, and start typing the username, you‘ll see a pop-up of matching user names and just tap the name of ther user you’re wishing to tag

Historically 25yos and over tend to be late to rookie picks but we have seen the lack of kpd depth on the market so a team might go early on him. I agree id take him with one of our late 50s picks rather than wait for the rookie draft.

I will be glad if we sign hardie purely bc i dont think it was fair to cut him after 6 months he deserves a pre season at least.

Murdoch has underwhelmed me at times but with sav gone we lack kpd depth so i can see why he has been kept.

Kroeger would just be the unlucky man out in that scenario depending on how many picks we want for the draft.

As it stands we have Stanley Conway Blitz Neale Foster… in that order.
They’ll pick up someone as insurance but I wouldn’t expect anyone better than Neale to be available.

Neither neale or foster are frontline rucks and blitz and stanley are 33.
I ageee we wont get a great ruck as a dfa but we need to sign someone.

Would s**t me if we miss Curtin via gws pick swapping with another club to jump in before us.

I can see that happening especially if a club like adel or syd or melb want to jump up.

I just don't see him as being draftable, at 25 years of age you'd want to see at least some ready to go attributes.

Understand your reservations. I just think there aren’t many other cheap back up options. I am sure he is in the mix with a couple of mature players I don’t know about.

I wouldn’t be upset with a late or rookie pick being used. Unlikely he becomes a regular afl player but I think worth a punt unless they have someone else in the wings

Agreed. They will… but don’t think he’ll be more than C grade plodder.
As there isn’t anything much available on the scrap heap out there TBH.

Thanks for the detailed reply👍.

I did tag you as you post regularly during twos games and am interested to hear your thoughts. I also asked as a close mate is also a close watcher of the twos (with a scouting background) and he is a rap too. His one knock is also decision making, more so than foot skills. His opinion is one affects the other and he’s a safe kick without being good. Doesn’t sound completely unlike Kolo in that regard.

Good comments from plenty who watch a bit, might be a chance on the cheap.

I do like big Shannon Neale... but no way his a ruckman. His clearly a forward/ruckman just like Hawkins.
And yes you can't judge him from 1 game against 1 game, but he did get killed against Marshall vs St Kilda.

I'm totally 90% Sure we will get a insurance ruckman, who ever that is.. BUT then it's Geelong, I have that feeling they won't and we will be all talking about that they didn't
