It's a risk but he has such talent and class, we can't let players like that walk out the door. He doesn't come across like an ego flog that will be happy with himself just turning up. They way he plays doesn't suggest that.

I always support our philosophy of not paying overs. I rate him very highly though so I wouldn't be trying to pay him unders or hoping to get a cheap deal with him. I'd hope we'd be close enough to other offers that it makes sense just to stay in Geelong.
Yeah but unfortunately I think it comes down the numbers, if it's an extra 100k or an extra year I think he deservedly takes it, he wouldn't have made much out of footy up until now

Happy to not overpay for Stengle. He’s on fire at the moment but stunk last year. If he’s out to maximise his earnings we are not his proper home.
I see your point, but i am sitting on the fence on this one.
Club will make the right decision that is in our best interests IMO.
On last years form he'd be lucky to have gotten more than 450-500k TBH.
This year. A contract year. Everything is falling into place for him to cash in.
If we lose him and get a 1st round compensation then so be it. Pick 8-12 will be fair compensation.
Most likely go or be swallowed up if we attain a few free/restricted agents as in Bailey Smith one would assume.

All this hype about Bailey Smith. Not really a midfielder per se . Where do people suggest he fits in to our side? Not sure where he played at the dogs.

This is the problem with people talking about going and getting in a couple of "elite" midfielders. Smith might become a good player but he isn't Danger or Cameron at their peak. On recent form he's not a midfielder and not elite.

Honestly feel we're at risk of doing a Hawthorn with O'Meara and Mitchell or Richmond with Taranto and Hopper if we desperately go for mids when there isn't much available.

If Smith is cheap (a late first rounder and not crazy salary) then fine. But otherwise I'd prefer to just go to the draft and accept we're likely looking at developing the team for the 2027-28 time frame rather than sell the farm to chase unlikely near term success.

Perfect winger.
Mickey Turner!!

Well, not quite the same rangy build!

The bonus with having a "real" winger like Smith is that Cameron will have less reason to push down-field (not that he should be doing that anyway at this point regardless of who's on the wings). So this might solve two problems with one player.

He was a midfielder when he was the second best player of the finals in 2021. Before pushed him to the wing because he was drowning in mids

Our R1 should be enough for Smith.

The worry would be that he turns doesn't get back to his best or near it.

For a pick likely in the teens (after bids) it's probably worth it assuming we have done all our research and are comfortable bringing Smith in.

If he was 27+ years old I wouldn't be keen, but he still is pretty young.

LDU next year as a FA would be better, but if good youngish players want to come to your club, It's hard to pass on them (it rarely happens).

I'm less worried about the pick and more worried about the contract.

If a pick 15 draftee doesn't work out it's shit but they're on the list for 3-4 years and are never paid more than way below average wage.

Why would Smith be choosing us? He seems to love the limelight so why is he wanting to go to Geelong? Is he really going to come here for unders from a contract perspective?

And why should guys like Holmes, Miers, Guthrie, Stengle, etc sign for unders if we're throwing money at Smith?

We definitely won't be getting him on the cheap (salary-wise anyway). He will cost.

My guess is wants to be the main man in the midfield - given where we're at in that department, that may very well appeal to him (if he is indeed interested in coming). I'm not convinced he is over the line just yet.

He might like the surfcoast lifestyle? Who knows.

I think he would be an outstanding get, personally.

Smith being extremely under rated here. Showed more than holmes at the same age for a start. Will walk straight into our midfield adding explosiveness and pace. There are reasons that other clubs with better midfields than ours are chasing him.
Agreed.

He would be an outstanding pickup for us. Can seriously play.

Lots of reasons smith would choose us. Here he becomes our best mid and leads the young group. At Hawthorn he joins a settled line up where there's a risk that their best mix pushes him out to a wing again

He likes the social media but not so much the limelight, which makes Geelong perfect because he can live near the surf and curate his insta without being bombarded by journos. He can be in control of his media profile a lot more.

Plus he's a really dedicated trainer, so he would exactly fit the mould that Chris Scott gives license to be more in control of their own conditioning. He would help keep that personal accountability culture going through the young group which we risk losing through player churn.

I don't think the money would be materially different between us and Hawks. If anything the afl could ask him to walk away from his cotton on sponsorship due to perceived conflict of interest and he'd get less money

If we get Smith while keeping our future first that's a huge win.

Even if it went to shit next year for whatever reason, you've got that signature in the bank while still having the draft as insurance.

Midfield would be closing in on finished (talent wise, they still need to develop with age) and we can turn our attention to looking at a key forward with our early pick(s).

Exactly this. He's the type of player we need

It is not unusual to test the market to determine ones value. Who has not?

For 100 to 150 k more I do not think it is worth it.

I for one do not want to loose him, especially if we end up with a pick in the 20s after priority selections.

Sign him for our first rounder on the same deal as Holmes and I'm all for it.

But the difference in potential downside between 4 vs 6 years and $800k vs $1.1m is huge.
The cap is going up dramatically and so is the floor. We need to spend it on guys who can earn it, not those we presume will earn it

I have a feeling Tyson will stay and reward the faith, but I don’t begrudge him for leaving if he’s offered significantly more from another club. He needs to maximise his earnings now and it helps that he’s already achieved the ultimate on-field success. If he’s playing for another club next year, I’ll still be cheering for you Tyson!

Smith would absolutely add to our side, powerful, clean hands, gun... BUT my biggest worry is the knee, maybe just scarred by Menz though. Players don't always return well from a full reco, Libba hasn't skipped a beat at the dogs twice, but his game isn't built around power and exposiveness or agility, he is just a pig in the trough... I have real worries that we could pay up for Smith and he is either never the same player he was on track to be, or he never gets a good run at it on the field.

Taking some calculated risks is the name of the game though, if they come off you look like a genius, if they don't... a chump
