Happy to not overpay for Stengle. He’s on fire at the moment but stunk last year. If he’s out to maximise his earnings we are not his proper home.

Yeah but unfortunately I think it comes down the numbers, if it's an extra 100k or an extra year I think he deservedly takes it, he wouldn't have made much out of footy up until nowIt's a risk but he has such talent and class, we can't let players like that walk out the door. He doesn't come across like an ego flog that will be happy with himself just turning up. They way he plays doesn't suggest that.
I always support our philosophy of not paying overs. I rate him very highly though so I wouldn't be trying to pay him unders or hoping to get a cheap deal with him. I'd hope we'd be close enough to other offers that it makes sense just to stay in Geelong.
I see your point, but i am sitting on the fence on this one.Happy to not overpay for Stengle. He’s on fire at the moment but stunk last year. If he’s out to maximise his earnings we are not his proper home.

Yes this. Strong record of paying fair but not overpaying.Club will make the right decision that is in our best interests IMO.
Perfect winger. All this hype about Bailey Smith. Not really a midfielder per se . Where do people suggest he fits in to our side? Not sure where he played at the dogs.

Perfect winger.
Mickey Turner!!
He was a midfielder when he was the second best player of the finals in 2021. Before pushed him to the wing because he was drowning in midsAll this hype about Bailey Smith. Not really a midfielder per se . Where do people suggest he fits in to our side? Not sure where he played at the dogs.
This is the problem with people talking about going and getting in a couple of "elite" midfielders. Smith might become a good player but he isn't Danger or Cameron at their peak. On recent form he's not a midfielder and not elite.
Honestly feel we're at risk of doing a Hawthorn with O'Meara and Mitchell or Richmond with Taranto and Hopper if we desperately go for mids when there isn't much available.
If Smith is cheap (a late first rounder and not crazy salary) then fine. But otherwise I'd prefer to just go to the draft and accept we're likely looking at developing the team for the 2027-28 time frame rather than sell the farm to chase unlikely near term success.
I'm less worried about the pick and more worried about the contract. Our R1 should be enough for Smith.
The worry would be that he turns doesn't get back to his best or near it.
For a pick likely in the teens (after bids) it's probably worth it assuming we have done all our research and are comfortable bringing Smith in.
If he was 27+ years old I wouldn't be keen, but he still is pretty young.
LDU next year as a FA would be better, but if good youngish players want to come to your club, It's hard to pass on them (it rarely happens).
We definitely won't be getting him on the cheap (salary-wise anyway). He will cost.I'm less worried about the pick and more worried about the contract.
If a pick 15 draftee doesn't work out it's shit but they're on the list for 3-4 years and are never paid more than way below average wage.
Why would Smith be choosing us? He seems to love the limelight so why is he wanting to go to Geelong? Is he really going to come here for unders from a contract perspective?
And why should guys like Holmes, Miers, Guthrie, Stengle, etc sign for unders if we're throwing money at Smith?
Agreed.Smith being extremely under rated here. Showed more than holmes at the same age for a start. Will walk straight into our midfield adding explosiveness and pace. There are reasons that other clubs with better midfields than ours are chasing him.
Lots of reasons smith would choose us. Here he becomes our best mid and leads the young group. At Hawthorn he joins a settled line up where there's a risk that their best mix pushes him out to a wing againI'm less worried about the pick and more worried about the contract.

If we get Smith while keeping our future first that's a huge win.Smith being extremely under rated here. Showed more than holmes at the same age for a start. Exactly this. He's the type of player we needSmith being extremely under rated here. Showed more than holmes at the same age for a start. Will walk straight into our midfield adding explosiveness and pace. There are reasons that other clubs with better midfields than ours are chasing him.

It is not unusual to test the market to determine ones value. Who has not?Happy to not overpay for Stengle. He’s on fire at the moment but stunk last year. If he’s out to maximise his earnings we are not his proper home.
The cap is going up dramatically and so is the floor. We need to spend it on guys who can earn it, not those we presume will earn itSign him for our first rounder on the same deal as Holmes and I'm all for it.
But the difference in potential downside between 4 vs 6 years and $800k vs $1.1m is huge.
