Honestly, our best work has been done via the draft. Currently in our Best 26 and not a 1st round pick (going backwards from best draft value to least):

Rookie Pick 33 - Zach Guthrie
Rookie Pick 16 - Jack Henry
Rookie Pick 15 - Ollie Dempsey
Rookie Pick 14 - Brad Close
Rookie Pick 11 - Tom Atkins
Cat B Rookie - Mark Blicavs
Cat B Rookie - Mark O'Connor
Cat B Rookie - Oisin Mullin
Cat B Rookie - Ted Clohesy
Pick 63 - Lawson Humphries
Pick 57 - Gryan Miers
Pick 41 - Jake Kolodjashnij
Pick 40 - Tom Stewart
Pick 36 - Shaun Mannagh
Pick 33 - Shannon Neale
Pick 25 - Mitch Knevitt

+ (more valuable picks, but none in the Top 10)

Tyson Stengle - SSP
Future 3rd round pick - Jack Bowes
Pick 20 (draft) - Max Holmes
Pick 20 (38 for 40 cancels out) - Bailey Smith
Pick 25 and throwaway picks and player - Ollie Henry
Pick 19 - SDK
Pick 21 - Rhys Stanley
Pick 11 - Connor O'Sullivan
Picks 9 and 28 - Patrick Dangerfield
Picks 13 & 15 (20 cancelled out by two second rounders) - Jeremy Cameron

It's absurd the way our list has been put together, lol.

If Danger doesn't come across in 2016, that group wouldn't have gone places. Selwood might be Mr Geelong but Danger is Atlas.

The thing too is the media will say "oh why didn't Reid stick around and become a club legend" etc etc, but the allure of playing the the club you supported close to home who constantly play finals must be a huge lure instead we will see memes about Cotton On and farms instead.
The Media will continue questioning the deal until Reid starts to dominate games for us and then they'll flip on a dime. Happened with Danger and Jezza.

I don’t think any player from our club would honestly want to play for WC right now. They are a shambles. We will throw draft picks their way and A LOT of them.
I said "and 1 or more clubs". We will be calling in a few favours. I have said before that this is the "Gary Ablett Senior" moment for our Club all over again.

Underrated part of this, and one I don't want to get too 'conspiratorial' on...but guess who manages Harley Reid? That's right kids, Nick Gieschen...of Connors Sports Management. Also represents Oliver and represented Rohan.

Who is O. Henry, Dangerfield, Bowes and Smith's agent...Paul Connors.

If Danger wants a chat with Reid and to sell him on Geelong...like the aforementioned have done...he's got the perfect way to do so.
JUH is also on the Conners books if I remember correctly?

I think tassie will be fine in terms of player retention. Country kids drafted there will love it. It won't be like gold coast

Imo, it depends on what experience AFL they live.

If they are competitive, if they build a stadium, if they can access the equal of any other training facility with the best medical coaching etc…. then yes they will probably retain most or at least be like the interstate sides now. If the stadium is at a level that it is KP or Adelaide Oval etc and they have top end training location then they will have some that stay and love it. Yes they will have some that quickly decide that they want out but thats the same at any club. Lets say like Horne Francis or Reid or OHenry etc. Long term they will need to develop a constant stream of locals the like of which is now flooding qld teams but it could work for them. Like with the Northern teams , they may find that the older players might be attracted to them . Players that have experienced the AFL, played for years , done the G , done finals etc and reaches a point of wanting to tone down the noise.

However without comparative training and playing enviorments I think they will struggle to fend of other clubs coming for their players. Playing out of the current grounds would be possible short term but long term I think it will be hard to overcome the mainland appeal.

But thats opionion and not fact. So that is what they wish to go with then fine. Up them. It will be their club and it may be fine playing out of the current ground and if it isn’t then its their problem if it is one. Just about every other club has started at grounds less than new stadiums so maybe they have to try it and see what its like before the spend on a stadium has a consensus.

They certaining will need to do more to develop their own kids. Relative to this thread, its gong to take some time before a constant stream of talent that likes the Gold Coast is now on the end of. Adding country kids may help but there is probably a limit to that and they will have to target talent as much as where the talent originates.

The one thing that is a concern to me that has never happened before. They will be entering a period where the draft has become somewhat compromised and the the best talent will not always be available to them. If West Coast can find themselves struggling in the mire then ..its possible that a Tas team could too. Once all the special draft concessions are gone and the players are too... then we will see if they can be a strong independent club/side.

Rules changed according to AFL website article ShadowCat posted.

But as I say... It has been talked about so little, I'm still not sure it's true... even though I read it with my own eyes.

As with all these new rules…my bet half the afl really do not know how it will be adjudicated until it is tested.

I'm honestly in that camp too. Problem is, and what most people don't realize...is that it actually prevents us from trading for 5 years as well. If we get Reid, that's it for first rounders until 2030 (2 in 4 rule would start from 2028 - in an extremely compromised draft). Alongside breaking the bank, I just don't know how we could justify it - especially when he'd be getting paid double what other young guns in Holmes and Smith would be making.

If you're bringing in someone like Bont, I reckon those players would understand it given just how highly regarded he is. Bring in a player who's proven a 10th of what guys like Holmes and Smith already have, and it starts to get a lot more dicey when it comes to club culture.

I think the only way we could do it is if we did a deal up front that took him to FA, that steadily increased and backended so he got paid a shitload when the CBA inevitably increases again. At that point, we could then offer the same contracts to Holmes and Smith, and have them all on equal footing.

Obviously other players come into it, but those would easily be the 3 highest rated young guys if they were all on our list.

Definitely a balancing act. Could destroy a club like Essendon, if you get in over your head. If we were to do it, I think we could navigate it, but it would be uncharted waters given how young he is, and how much less he's proven thus far.

All true ..but we are all speculating as to his financial demands?

While its probably easy to see him saying that I will come but I want the range of payment 5 other clubs have offered. etc…. Id think after two years at WestCoast ..he might be willing to listen to the whys and hows of Geelong continued success. I would think if he came in on the same sort of money as Holmes and Smith he would still be well paid for a year 4 and year 5 player etc. Would that suffice?

I dont know ..not sure any one does. Has reid given any hint that he wants the big earth shaking dollars or is it just clubs throwing the money at him. Recently its seems like a new normal has been created. It seems every second player now is a 1.0M plus player.

I'm less concerned about the dollars as I think we will not do it if its not sellable to the playing group. I struggle to see how we can satisfy their demands ..without some very clever elaboration. Will all our future be enough 3 years of R1? Do we let a Free agent go to bring in a pick or alternatively do we look at the West Coast list and bring in a "so so" player that gets them an compensation extra pick. (how much cap room do we have) Do we trade out a player to get an extra pick. That could potential be the most destructive so it would have to be done carefully …but we did it all those years ago to get Ottens. Can we really do it all with picks. Will they demand a player or two? West Coast can basically demand ..more… then more… then more.. while he is contracted till it make him untradeable to us.

The point you raise about 5 years is insightful.. It would test our ability to bring in Free Agents and find late pick bargains.. and probably the talent we already have. If a group is strong enough and young enough can a best 22 can go years with only minor changes? Be interesting to look at 2007 thru 2011. Could we make it work? How many times can one find Ollie Dempsey as a late pick rookie? The other thing is the introduction of Tas will bring chances to gain picks. Its not unreasonable to think that we lose a player or two when they are recruiting.

Its good fodder for discussion but its going to be sometime before I believe we can really get it done in 2025. I think if he is prepared to wait… then maybe next year in 2026 we have the picks and him out of contract.

If Reid comes to Geelong, ( if anything my guess it be after his contract is finish ) . The long term view and Joel Selwood has been a big advocate on saying this... You can get paid more at other clubs, but if you come here your playing for success..
So basically if Reid chooses Geelong he would probably get offered more else where

To me this would have to be a factor. To bring him in..he would have to turn his back on offers from other clubs that were crazytown numbers and play for us on extremely good numbers. Playing at Geelong for less but be happy as it brought other types of remuneration…playing in a good side , playing local etc.

No idea if thats what would appeal .. but Holmes and Smith and Danger have probably all turned their backs on more money elsewhere…so its probably not unrealistic. If he was after just after money ..then he could probably just stay at WC. Him wanting to move means its probably not his #1 motivation.

Imagine the outrage of this when Brisbane are just about to draft likely their third no1 draft pick via their academy… I know the Ashcroft boys weren’t chosen at 1 but they were quite often cited as the best in the draft and only slipped due to the club ties.

Having 3 no picks in such short succession is unprecedented

No matter what they paid.. talent wize both Ashcrofts were #1 types..just like Dacios. Early days but Annable is probably top10.. and how good probably is going to take time to sort out thru the champs etc but there are so others that will press their claims. Look at last year. I cant remember Lalor being rated #1 for most of it. Number 1 or not they will get a kid that will add to their strength. Its ironic that they changed the rules after we got Hawkins ..once. No matter what price a club pays .. priority access to the best talent is something top sides is not supposed to get and they are getting it regularly. The Saints guys will blow a popper valve.

I can already see the irrational melts and sea of red cards from eagle/richmond supporters if we land Reid and he takes a pay cut

We demand an AFL enquiry.

Really unless the afl and the players want it all public …its going to be an on going gripe. Pay too much and you are sal cap cheats. Pay too little and then you must pay in other ways and you are sal cap cheats

The cost will undoubtedly be high.

Having to weigh it all up isn't a process I'd envy.
Meeting a rabid west coast demands will be the hardest part.
The qualifier being he picks us and us only.

From there.. pistols at 10 paces with Mackie… and you know the pre season draft will be their best friend.. whether they mean it or not.

It’s gonna be a long… long year that guarantees this thread will be part 73 by October lol

Go Catters

Despite re-signing Toby Conway

… Continue to watch this space

Does this mean we are finally going after a quality ruck? We won't pay tdk enough to get him but id love to see us chase a quality ruck.

Absolutely agree about the picks, but the money and the culture aspects do concern me - and have concerned me since there became even a possibility that we could land him.

At the end of the day though, just have to go with the club and trust that our club culture is strong enough to absorb any discrepancies in payments - if he were to nominate us.

I'd hope we'd stick somewhat with our structure, offer around 1.2 ish, which gives us room to increase Bailey, Max, Dempsey, Zuth, Miers, COS, SDK etc. down the track if need be.

Reid will Cost way more than 1.2 with the cap going up. He'd be giving up way too much accepting 1.2 on a long term deal.

If #FishGutz is on the money and Reid wants to get to us (fingers crossed), wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that we have had some talks with his management and it's been ticked off that we can/could meet financial terms with him.

I'll back us in coin-wise.

I'd love nothing more for him to come for massive unders and the conspiracy theory blow-up to a new level.

I agree but I'm not sure wce will take our 3 1sts unless we can get one of them in the top 7. So we might need to trade a player to a 3rd club to help with other picks.

I don't disagree with your logic in general. We can see how keeping a player contracted can give even a mediocre player some trade value, if there is a demand.

In this particular case I don't believe it to be the case. If Conway's contract isn't heavily performance based, he'd be a liability. I think we contracted him cause we still had hopes that he could deliver for us. But all we've got is another year lost to injury and with our season's hope resting on a mid 30s Stanley

Our seasons hope is resting on sdk learning to not get bossed in the ruck real quick. Stanley isn't the hope.

Draper is a UFA...

Marshall as posited by Bald above, is certainly the most intriguing. They couldn't expect much for a 29 turning 30 year old...and he would be an absolutely elite 'bridge' while we wait for Edwards to come on.

Doubt it would be Cameron, given Collingwood are in their window too, and they have no-one in reserve. Doubt it would be TDK, as we wouldn't bring in TDK and pay him triple what his brother is earning.

Maybe Reeves, but he's not our style.

Could be Ned Moyle even though he re-signed - not getting any games at GC and Read could go past him.

Bailey Williams when he has enough of West Coast?

Another crack at Nick Bryan?

Honestly, a lot of ways it could go. But, if the club truly is gauging interest for Conway, it means we're not confident his body will ever hold up to the rigours of AFL. If we can't get him right, not sure Carlton is the place for him either, lol.

Bailey Williams is a spud I would spew if we went near him.
Bryan is a no now he's done an acl.
There is Draper but id be really surprised if we did.
Reeves isn't a Geelong style ruck.
Marshall is contracted long term-while I'd love him I don't see st kilda moving.
Tdk would be ideal but we aren't going to pay him 1.5 so he won't come.
I wonder if we would go at ROB again as a free agent to buy us 2 years to find a better ruck? I'd take pittonet but Carlton won't move him if tdk goes.
You could always try and get someone like ramsden or visinteni cheap as a gap filler. The other option is soldo but I doubt he passes a medical.

I agree but I'm not sure wce will take our 3 1sts unless we can get one of them in the top 7. So we might need to trade a player to a 3rd club to help with other picks.
I'm confident 3x R1's of ours aint getting it done.

I hope like hell it would... but doubt it.

So agree with you that we would need to find/do more if we wanted him before he is OOC.

What that more is... not sure.
