My issue with Worpel is he butchers the ball, do we need another butcher in the midfield?

You get him to feed guys like miers and mannagh and close that can use the ball.
We lack centre square mids and he is that. Danger and blitz are almost done, Guthrie is cooked. Clark isn't physically ready and knevitt is a maybe and even atkins is pushing 30. Worpel is the mid aged inside mid we hoped parfitt would be so it's a no brainer for me.

Hearing this third hand, but apparently the Reid's next door neighbour was in the MCC on Easter Monday spruiking that Harley is a certainty to come to the Cats next year.
I will be lurking on the Richmond BF board if he does

Why unlikely?

Because if this trial drags on for years (which they can do see Jack de belin and others) and he eventually gets found not guilty-if we had terminated him early we would have the aflpa and lawyers all over us (with good reason). The club won't risk a termination until the matter is complete (they may ask for permission to put him on the LTI and fill his spot but that's a separate issue).

Twomey doubled down on Reid today from his comments last week and even added we are into the chase.

This is live people. He is hearing the same things I am and it’s exciting we are making the push this early in the season. As I said, there’s a huge amount to play out but I am genuinely feeling confident on this. I know Twomey uses the phrase “I think” and “if” in his summation but the vital point is, “Geelong is into the Harley Reid chase.” We want to lock it up this season.

Follow this closely because it’s going to start getting louder in the coming weeks. And I believe after their bye there will be increased clarity around this.

Worpel is not without weaknesses but if it's Bruhn out for Worpel in that's a pretty sizeable upgrade in everything other than kicking ability i would say.
I does make me wonder why we didn't give Parfitt another year. He's doing pretty well in the wafl and could have really helped us this season.

It would be a different look but we have some pretty good outside users and could adapt. Imagine a rerun on the Carlton game but we played Worpel and one other similar player that could win the 1-1. Suddenly we aren't pushing an extra to the stoppage as much and are not getting beaten on the outside due to the outnumber there.

You linked his injury as an explantion for why his output is less than his expected output given his draft pick.

That expected output include a pool a players who had have various attributes some of which include history of injury.

Missing a year from injury is an attribute that decreases expected future output, more then a lack of exposure to football increases it.

It does and it doesn't. For every Josh cowan or smedts or thurlow etc there's a linc McCarthy-so it depends on the player.

Also, Worpel is not a lock. But of course we’ve had conversations with him. Not sure what Sam is hearing to make him believe he’s a lock but nothing I’ve heard indicates he is a lock at all.

I don’t really rate Worpel that highly. If he came as our sole acquisition it would be awful. If he came with Reid, it could be fantastic. He’s a great fourth/fifth stringer through the midfield.

Furthermore, not a secret anymore that we are targeting Butters in 2026 after Clark reported it today. I feel more confident in our position than Bulldogs if that means anything this far out from the decision…

This makes sense to me. If we're after Butters, no point bringing in Worpel. He'll be playing vfl after 1 year.

Let's be real though, we don't hold all the cards on Reid/Butters. As much as we wish it was, the reality is it's not our decision.

You get Worpel this year, and like Smith, you incrementally improve the midfield year on year.

2026 is where Butters or Reid come in, when they're actually going to be allowed to leave.

All things things going to plan, that's a 3 year midfield rebuild that takes us from a bottom 4 midfield in 2023, to what we'd expect to be a top 4 group in 2027.

The defence looks set long-term, so if needed, you look for the best key forward on the market by then, and we're looking at flags while Tassie sucks up all avenues to improvement.

Obviously we try to win the flag every year, but there's a long term plan too.

If Reid happens (this year or next), we won't have anything left for Butters except to a) try and push his value up beyond a Port match or b) hope that having nothing means Port takes whatever compo pick they get AND there are no alternatives for him (e.g. if he was OK going to the Bulldogs and they had the trade collateral).

If Reid happens there wouldn't be any point in matching butters. We'd get cleaned out the first time

I still don’t see how we could get the Reid deal done at the end of 2025.

And the ‘West Coast will take what they’re offered’ BS won’t work for a contracted player

I'm sure it will but we don't have the currency this year and they wouldn't agree even if we did. Next year is another matter.

No he wouldn't. We need to rebuild a whole midfield.
