From what I’ve been told we are preparing for Reid to request us but getting the pieces is going to be a battle. But a a request is now expected. So the scramble is already beginning, not sure where we find pieces to satisfy by that’s the mission.

Also, we still like the idea of JUH if he’s cheap. Very cheap. His antics probably helping this cause lol.
Wonder if big Tobias likes Perth weather?

Rather than trade players or high draft picks to West Coast, we could in good faith have Mackie & Wellsy do their recruiting for them for 2 or 3 seasons to help them out but only after they've finished doing ours.... na that's being too generous.
Steady on mate, we don't want them to rebuild that quick

Really? What info has this guy got correct?

Oliver wanting to come to cats like 6 months before anyone else for one.

Both he and Geelong are very into each other.

Others as well like Tsapatolis picking us before anyone else knew. He doesn't say much but when he does I listen.

It’s interesting all these talk about trading him has come out today as well. It makes sense. I’ve heard nothing about us moving Conway but it does align with the idea of us finding assets urgently.

How do you rate the likelihood of us closing the deal, from what you've heard?

Any indication of how much we'll have to give up?

I think we can offer... not saying we do, not saying WC would accept.

3x R1s + 2x R2s

This years - R1 + R2
2026 - R1
2027 - R1 + R2

I'm being greedy holding onto our R3s.... WC would prob also ask for them even though they are trashola picks anyway.

Do the rules allow us to trade that many future picks?

Where are we acquiring the additional 2027 round 1 or round 2 picks from?

Unless they change the rules, if you trade a future first round pick then your other first round picks are off limits, or if you trade a future second to fourth round picks then your future first is off limits - unless you trade in additional picks to cover what you wish to trade out

We only have to go back to 2022 to see a clear example of that in effect when the multi-team mega trade with JH-F going to Port - during negotiations, Port reached out to the AFL to seek permission to trade both their future R1 & R2 picks as part of the deal and were told nope

While the final agreed trade did see Port trade both their future R1 & R2, a difference between the earlier scenario is that they got a future R2 back from GWS

Rules changed according to AFL website article ShadowCat posted.

But as I say... It has been talked about so little, I'm still not sure it's true... even though I read it with my own eyes.

Under the changes, clubs will be able to trade their full suite of picks 1 year ahead with restrictions applying to the second year of trading that previously applied to the trading of picks one year ahead

If we apply that to trading this year, it would basically mean:
  • 2025 draft hand, fully tradeable
  • 2026 draft hand, fully tradeable
  • 2027 draft hand, restricted to either R1 keeping R2 & R3, or if trading R2 and/or R3 you have to keep R1

I thought R4 had previously counted in future trading but maybe not

For example this season, clubs will be able to trade their 2025 picks and all of their 2026 picks, but then have to carry their 2027 second and third-round selections to trade that year's first-round pick, or to trade out their 2027 second and third-round picks, they need to retain that year's first-round pick.

The AFL has kept its 'two-in-four' condition to future trading, meaning clubs must use at least two first-round picks over a rolling four-year period to be able to trade out their future first-round selections.

Yeah that's how I understood it.

So essentially we have on hand for Reid:

2025, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks
2026, 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th round picks
2027 1st round OR 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks,

So we could have 3 firsts and two seconds on the table, or 2 first and 3 seconds. Former seems much more likely, if there were to be any possibility of getting Reid now.

So Reid would be our highest paid player? Could ruffle some feathers internally. Can't see him leaving half mil on the table to play for us. Don't think we have enough depth to miss out on 3 years of drafting. This is going to make or break us.

I'm honestly in that camp too. Problem is, and what most people don't realize...is that it actually prevents us from trading for 5 years as well. If we get Reid, that's it for first rounders until 2030 (2 in 4 rule would start from 2028 - in an extremely compromised draft). Alongside breaking the bank, I just don't know how we could justify it - especially when he'd be getting paid double what other young guns in Holmes and Smith would be making.

If you're bringing in someone like Bont, I reckon those players would understand it given just how highly regarded he is. Bring in a player who's proven a 10th of what guys like Holmes and Smith already have, and it starts to get a lot more dicey when it comes to club culture.

I think the only way we could do it is if we did a deal up front that took him to FA, that steadily increased and backended so he got paid a shitload when the CBA inevitably increases again. At that point, we could then offer the same contracts to Holmes and Smith, and have them all on equal footing.

Obviously other players come into it, but those would easily be the 3 highest rated young guys if they were all on our list.

Definitely a balancing act. Could destroy a club like Essendon, if you get in over your head. If we were to do it, I think we could navigate it, but it would be uncharted waters given how young he is, and how much less he's proven thus far.

Was just watching the Front Bar with John Longmire. He said they knew Buddy Franklin was coming to Sydney 12 months prior to his eventual arrival. I’m sure things behind the scenes with Reid are already at an advanced stage too. This is going to be interesting to see how things play out over the rest of the year.
