I wouldn’t be shocked if an early stage rehabmcan guthrie in a moon boot is still quicker than George stevensIs that a description of Stevens or Guthrie from the last 18 months?
We had also 10 rookie drafted players in our 23 also on grand final day… while Brisbane were loaded with first round picks including very early draft choices, academy kids, and father son picks, and a heap of trades. The AFL helped create a monster.
Breakdown of spending to build the 23 on GF day

We're fighting against both age and resources.
Next year they're adding two free agents that resulted in the creation of a pick 2 and pick 21 and they're also getting another top 5 pick at the draft.
We got Worpel and 19
....if his body actually let's him do that for the first since 2022. Compare the amount of AFL games Guthrie has played 2023-2025 compared to Duncan 2022-2024. Mitch was actually available as cover in 2025 based on his recent durability (despite slowing down).
Anyway as I say before each recent season, I hope this time Guthrie's body holds up.
Both

And the journeymen you've asked for for 5 years are a waste of timeConway is injured and Edwards is a stick.
No one who looks at the situation objectively can advocate for cuthrie staying on the list.I don't know anyone who doesn't love what Cam has bought to the team over his career - he's a 2 time Carji winner and premiership player, and I totally get the romanticism of wanting to see him back in the seniors, getting to call time on his career etc
But I'm not sure that's going to be the case, even if he re-signs for 1 more season
If he had missed just this last season then I'd def be open to retaining him to see how he'd bounce back but we all know it's a few steps beyond just one season out
He hasn't played senior football for over 500 days, it's been just 10 senior games in the last 1100+ days and by the time of round 0/1 next year it will be over 650 days since he last played senior football
Folks can talk about Guthrie having access to the best medical team available, but hasn't that been the case for the last 3 years while he's continued to battle injuries of a similar nature
Even the odd time over the past 15 months he took to the VFL field, he doesn't look the same player who we saw win the B&F in 22; in our last VFL game of the season it was Duncan who was covering the ground better but we know he was never going on into next season
They both should be the next 2 players off the list. It's been 3 years of rehab for Guth - he's long past the early stages, and having watched both guys in the VFL - I'd back in Stevens to better cover the ground than what we'd see from Guthrie
People will still scream that Geelong are the Man City/Real Madrid of the AFL, with the superstar list acquired through nefarious means, every unfair advantage known to man and permanent status as the AFL's pet.The AFL helped create a monster.

We're fighting against both age and resources. They spend three times as much at the draft, their players with a high DVI cost are closer to their peak age.

Ruggles was a defender, Clark's a midfielder.

Well yes, I think it goes without saying that this would be the plan assuming Guthrie can get on the park. If it doesn't look like happening by about Rd 6 or 7, I reckon then would be the time to give him the tap on the shoulder and plan ahead to the MSD.
Yes but we knew Mitch would be fit and available as a vfl backup if there was injuries. Guthrie is unlikely to be available so what's the point?

The Brisbane Galacticos are somehow still the people's champions - maybe a few more flags in a row could change that.
What is a journeyman ruck going to give us that playing Mitch edwards or mark blicavs wouldn’t??And the journeymen you've asked for for 5 years are a waste of time

Add to that the coach is a terrible human being putting on a nice guy act. I hate themYep, they've had a pretty decent run for sure.
It's partly why I was a bit annoyed they didn't trade Ah Chee to the Crows... Even though it cost them picks.
More that they are swimming for deep in talent and good fortune, that they can freely flush an R2 + R3 straight down the toilet and make Ah Chee go the long route.
I get it's under for him... but I just think Brisbane should read the room and copped one on the chin for unders.
The AFL deadset just gift wrapped them an R1 pick for a guy that is one knock away from retirement + they scored 2x free agents. I wouldn't be shocked if Oscar Allen isn't getting band 1 money either.
Not to mention that other clubs have done them solids by letting two Ashcrofts slide in the draft, when they could have been bid on at pick 1.
Then there's all the academy gun kids flowing in every single year. Another top kid this year after another flag.
Just trade Ah Chee away get to work... Nah, they wanted more... in the end they don't even want an R2 + R3... Rather get nothing.
Talk about being gifted a million fish but not willing to throw anything back in the Ocean.
A bit scabish behaviour imo.
I'm of the belief that given our (Saints) list profile, we've traded players for picks in free agency the last 2 years and hit the draft hard to get to the point of moving into the top 8. Whether the club is right or not it believes that we are ready next year so players coming in, in areas that we are weak. We were never trading Ro for picks.Listening to Ross Lyon and his plans for 2 rucks (which i disagree with) i dont think they were trading him even if we offered the future 1st so that makes me happier. We did all we could do.
Even when he played VFL last year on limited time, he didn’t look the same. Maybe scared of injury or breaking down again.Guth next year will be like Duncan this year. Five or six games in the seniors to cover for whoever's turn it is to be managed, a bit of unofficial coaching for the younger midfielders, and handy insurance in case of injury. He'd be unlikely to be in the midfield mix next September, all going well, but he'll have a role in enuring the chosen midfield lineup is primed and ready come finals.
Like Curnow, it may come down to assets. We may not have enough and he may have to come up with another solution. He wants us.
Just noticing this year - are other clubs starting to collectively freeze us out of trading?
Conway is injured and Edwards is a stick.
Mitch may well be all these things, however 3 games in the VFL in 24 and 7 last year, he’s got a long way to go to be at AFL standard.Saints didn’t want Marshall to go, they were pretty adamant about that.
It’s better if we go for OOC or Free Agents so it’s out of oppo clubs hands.
Hawthorn didn’t get any of their targets, Collingwood didn’t get their main target, Adelaide didn’t get theirs although they will through PSD and he was OOC.
This isn’t a Geelong thing, this is a blow back against Contracted players trying to move thing.
Teams were fed up with guys wanting out mid or late into their contract and put their foot down which they have every right to do.
You saw how Petoro acted when Merrett didn’t get traded. Almost petulant.
Cats and Saints were far more amicable. Ross even said Mackie was respectful to the process.
It just is what it is, this is a win for Mitch Edwards.
Starting ruck spot is his to grab, reckon we have our future ruck for the decade in Mitch.
He just needs to be given a shot.
