The Carlton Football Club is extremely disappointed in the report in today’s Sunday Age giving credit to comments made by discredited former AFL player Laurence Angwin.

“We are extremely angry that comments made by Laurence have been used in today’s article and that such comments attempt to discredit the Carlton Football Club and in particular players at our Club over the last three years. Laurence Angwin’s AFL career was terminated by the Carlton

Football Club after his repeated acts of misconduct, including testing positive for using illicit drugs, during his brief time at the Club. On several occasions since he has made comments that are damaging to the Club and our players. His allegations regarding illegal behaviour have previously been refuted and once again the Club totally refutes the comments in today’s article. It is disappointing that such comments are made and even more so that comments made by a person who has brought the Club and himself into disrepute, are given any credibility by the media,” said Carlton CEO, Michael Malouf.

Didn't realise he was still going on about our club.

he said something about i think 8 players other than him and karl had turned up under the influence of drugs and that 5 of the 9 players in the leadership group were among them and they couldnt look him in the eye when they were having a meeting to sack him.

and just over the weekend, in the pre-season cairns cup final, he ended up with a broken nose and concussion.

Actually no concussion afaik, but his team did lose to Cairns City Cobras (whom I played for when I first moved up here - yay!). CCC coincidently wear the CFC jumper, sing the Carlton song, and have a very long and proud history. They too, have also spent recent seasons in the cellar.

Nice to see them winning again. An omen perhaps?

Has to be an omen.

If anyone read the age article, and doubts the truth in the comments Angwin made, they are extremely naive.

Anyone who has spent time around footballer (or anyone else in the same age bracket as most of these guys) knows that drugs are extremely prevalent. And anyone who think Angwin/Norman were the only ones at Carlton is just plain stupid...

It's a sad but true way of life for many AFL players not just at Carlton.

Something to do with the ecstacy not making you put on weight or something?

5 people in the leadership group hey Angwin? Wiggins, Murphy and Gibbs are the only ones i could vote for NO :)

Its all about perspective though. If guys are occasionally takinga couple of pills out at a dance party during the off-season, or doing a couple of lines of coke as part of a big night out, and its not affecting their match preparation, committment to training or performance - or the reputation of the club - then I have no problem with it.

When it becomes a problem, as it did with Angwin (and goes beyond occasional, and brings in theft and other stupidity), then its more serious - and the bloke gets cut.

But I just don't understand that press release - its a real head in the sand attitude, unnecessarily protecting guys who are probably past that stage in their life, and who have learnt from their prior mistakes. The club should be contrasting the blokes who have turned their football around with the Angwin?Norman types who didn't. And I'm sure they are internally...

There is no denying others were involved at that time. I know of a couple, who I will not name. My understanding is all those involved are no longer at the club.

A demonstration of how clueless Angwin was, was him turning up at a Bullants game the weekend after the club had sacked him. He seemed to think that wearing a beanie pulled down low on his head might hide his identity. He walked past the Bullants Social Club where both Pagan & Elshaug were sitting & made his way to the hill area behind the City end goals. He stopped briefly to talk to a couple of his disciples, who were standing a metre or so from where I was standing. Shortly afterwards his disciples moved down to join him behind the goals. I have no doubt Pagan & Elshaug would have spotted him.

More like he couldnt look them in the eye because he was so far off his face. He in his pathetic mind probley tells everyone that 5 or 6 Adelaide players helped him flog the vcr he stole from his housemate.

I am sure he wasn't talking about this years leadership group:confused:

Most definitely not this year's group:
"There would have been eight blokes (Carlton players) there that day who wouldn't have passed a test. Five out of the nine in the leadership group couldn't make eye contact with us when they called us in because they'd been out with us," he said.

Think this issue is very timely. In my opinion the Carlton Footy club went down mainly because of a lack of discipline through the whole club. I believe that Angwin is not far off the mark with his allegations.

The club coming out on the front foot is not so great imo. It is more Carlton pr bull and needs to stop. If we are going to progress then we need to face truths and be upfront. From this honest base we can then build a real footy team that will withstand the pressure that great teams have to embrace.

Sure Angwin has problems. However this doesn't mean he cannot spot others with issues. I still believe we have a few with aspects of Angwin's weaknesses. It would serve us well to protect less and really look deep to strengthen our base.

Carlton is quick to discredit Angwin's claims that AFL players in Melbourne introduced him to ecstasy. "There would have been eight blokes (Carlton players) there that day who wouldn't have passed a test. Five out of the nine in the leadership group couldn't make eye contact with us when they called us in because they'd been out with us," he said.

he doens't say that 5 of the players in the leadersip group also took drugs, he just says they'd been out with them. but still, you'd expect people in the leadership group to have no involvement with this kind of stuff at all. but mediumsizered says that these players are no longer at the club anyway.

A former finals great from Carlton during the 90's dealing to players?

So who are former players regarded as finals greats from this era.

Silvagni
Williams
Kernahan
McKay
Kouta
Dean
Bradley

Can't see any of these guys dabbling. The term was probably used for its sensationalist quality. Still, love to know who's involved in such behaviour.

I'd like to know as well. But then maybe i wouldn't, because I know it would tarnish my view of the player, and in my eyes, pretty much any player that has worn the Carlton top with pride is a legend in my eyes.

I'm not sure i'd want that ruined. I think i'd rather not know.

he doesn't say that the fomer great was a player in the 90s - merely that this player allegedly saw another Carlton player at a nightclub in the late 90s and provided him drugs...

i think the player he's alluding to was actually a key-finals player prior to that point for the club...think 70s-80s.
