Wonderful chaps.

Spence didn't give up the financial information? Even after two weeks?

And if she did, why didn't they let her go?

Because the chance of her going to the police is huge. You're not going to say "oh, I just fell down the stairs" when you're toenails are crushed and some of your finger is missing.

A thread whereby I will post stories from one of the nastier places in the world.

We'll start with this cracker.

As Bigfooty's resident Glaswegian feel free to retort.

But I love the idea of regional/city based threads in here.

for Glasgow Murders I recall reading the Bible John murders of the late 60s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bible_John officially unsolved but widely believed to committed by Peter Tobin who went inside for killing three young woman in the early 90s.

Parents used to live there and said that there were parts of city that everyone knew to avoid. If you were an outsider you were guaranteed to get bashed and some had the own signature ways of doing so.

I would love to retort, but unfortunately, i believe Glasgow has the highest murder rate of stabbings in Europe. But my uncle reckons, in his words, that Edinburgh is worse. Because he says people in Glasgow will tell you when they're going to knife you, but people in Edinburgh will knife you first, and tell you why after it.

The only defense i have is that the story in the article isn't in Glasgow :P West Kilbride is pretty far. But there are definitely areas i wouldn't go near, specifically the ones which have a high unemployment rate. Every town has one and they're all rough, full of people that think they're "hard men"

I have spent more than enough time in the shitier areas of Glasgowto hold my own. Maryhill, Possil, Easterhouse, the Gorbals, did plenty of stories in all where I had real "OK, this could go badly wrong" moments.

Also visited the Bar-L many times. Polmont too, which is like Glaswegian primary school.

(Also had some great nights out in the Weeg)

Reminds me of the old story -

" Bloke walking down a Glasgow street , 3 others bail him up and ask " Are ye Catholic or Protestant ?? "
He says " I'm an ATHEIST !!... "
1 of the 3 says " Aye...but are ye a CATHOLIC atheist or a PROTESTANT one ??..... "

Usually Belfast in that story but works in Glasgow too.

Tobin was originally nicked for murder of Angelina Kluk in Glasgow.

What a sickening take that was.

I spoke to cops on that case who reckon Tobin has probably murdered about 30 young women.

Billy Connolly did a version of that where a Jewish guy is walking through a Catholic area in Belfast and gets bailed up by some guys asking if he was Protestant. He says no and they let him on his way. He gets to a Protestant area and they say "Hey you (hey Jew...lol), you a Kafflik?" He says no and they let him on his way.

He goes 50 metres up the road and an arab jumps out of a close and stabs him.

from the sounds of it, Glasgow makes Broady/Dallas look like Toorak in terms of crime rates

Just been reading up about the Bible John and Peter Tobin stories today. I think it's a bit of an eye-opener for people who are waiting/hoping for a solution to Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac that we've got someone who appears to jump out as a certainty to be Bible John and yet we've had no confirmation either way in over five years. As far as I can tell, the only publicly-released reason not to suspect Tobin, was that he was convicted for murdering younger females; Bible John murdered females roughly the same age, or perhaps a bit older. But really, isn't that more a case of his age changing, rather than the victims?

As for Glasgow, I highly recommend going there to anyone who's thinking of going to Scotland, and just doing the standard 'check out Edinburgh and get out of there as quickly as possible'. Nothing against Edinburgh; it's one of my favourite places in the world, but I just think all of Scotland is absolutely brilliant. I thought Glasgow was a great place and I never felt unsafe at any point. It's often compared to Belfast, but even though you may not necessarily feel threatened in Belfast, there is a certain 'something could jump off here at any moment' vibe to the place, that I just didn't find in Glasgow.

Haven't been to Glasgow. Purely through circumstance however, not avoidance; I've been to Edinburgh twice. Really liked it. Not many cities can claim to have a mountain smack bang in the middle of the CBD.

Not Glasgow per se, but Lanarkshire, so totes in the neighbourhood.

How did i not notice this before? I live just near there and i am fairly sure he is a friend of a friend, although i've never met him. For some reason his name rings a bell.

EDIT: Bugger, was going to check my mates friends list on Facebook, turns out he's deactivated his account just recently.

Okay, so why is Glasgow so totally grunge in comparison to Edinburgh?

More people, more sectarian elements present. In around 2006 close to 60% of all religiously aggravated crimes occured in Glasgow. Of that about 30% were football related.

Edinburgh - where I'm currently sitting - is also undeniably a beautiful city. Glasgow is not.
