A back 6 (7) filled with, Ridley, Reid, Redman, Roberts, McGrath, Prior and still having Hayes, Nguyen, Johnson, Clarke, Farrow, Kondogiannis, El~Hawli?, Cox? in depth is a staggering amount for us, one that you can go with a type and see a clear distinct change from what we have done.
AFL
B: Nguyen McKay Ridley
Hb: McGrath Reid Redman
int: Roberts (Def/mid), Johnson (fwd/def/mid) Clarke (Wing refilef)

VFL
B: Prior Hayes KondoGiannis
Hb: Farrow Cox El-Hawli

I know people are gonna come at me for this but I'm not a fan of this trend from Rosa.

Edwards getting re-signed weeks after an ACL, when he didn't start the year in the seniors. We didn't even have a look at what might happen in the MSD (especially given Bryan and Draper had both gone down by that point too)
El-Hawli getting re-signed whilst being injured, his second or third reasonably significant injury in basically 12 months at the club, before struggling for impact in the seniors after.
Jones to a lesser extent because there's other avenues for him (in particular in defence) but still a worrying trend

Now Setterfield. It's not the player he is on field that worries me, it's the injuries, the fact he won't be available from the start of the year and that he's missed about half a season every year through injury. The other thing is, we have a chance to look at others first. We don't need to make a decision until February.

If Setterfield, Edwards and SEH don't make a consistent impact this year, either due to injury or poor form, they have to go.

SEH having a ripper pre season so far.

For me its that Jones, Edwards, McMahon are all essentially the same player.

Yeah the edwards pick in isolation isnt that bad, they clearly saw something in him during preseason and possibly picked him as an SSP more as a long term project rather than as injury back up so can understand them wanting to have another look at him in 2026.
Jones is a bit of a headscratcher, we already know what he is capable of and I just dont think he is going to be best 23 in long term...but it does feel like the coaches like him. McMahon seemed excessive for me too but then alot of other supporters were keen on him being rewarded for his output at the end of season. At end of day theyre all fringe players in thes quad and I dont think its the end of the world.

2 maybe 3 need to be cut at the end of next year though.

do we need that mobile HFF / pseudo tall forward?

could actually have Caddy + Gerryn/May as tall forwards + Wright Ruck /Fwd

I rate McMahons goal kicking and he is my pick to make but all 3 are very fringe/borderline AFL players.

I'm only gonna come at you because I made this exact point about Jones when he got the contract and you didn't see the issue.

Of course the percentages say even the best list management only get 60 to 70 percent of the decisions right.

Setterfield doesn’t work for me not because of his ability to play a role but he misses 5 to 10 games every year.

Edwards for me was worth the risk. Most recover from ACL injuries.

SEH. Guess that is in the eye of the beholder.

Given we are not talking draft picks then the coach is actually having a big say in these decisions. It is simply not just Rosa.

I don't mind it too much, if they rate those players based on what they're seeing internally then I'm happy for him to back them in.

The Jones one being 2 years is the real head scratcher.

Edwards was showing potential and was one of the first injuries we had.

El-Hawli at one year for a player with attributes we sorely need is not an issue.

McMahon is one I would have let go but he at least took his chances so we likely felt we had to re-sign him.

Jones for two years was simply bizarre.

Don't care about pre-season hype. Same was said last year. Until he produces consistently in the AFL it's irrelevant.

They're really not the same player. Jones is far more an up the ground player than the other two, who are much deeper type forwards.

I said to a lesser extent and I didn't say that, I said he was the most obvious one to go into negotiations with at the time and he has other avenues to explore on field compared to the others.

Jones is the one that made the most sense.

Edwards is 25, and it wasn't so much the re-signing in and of itself, but the timing. He was the third season ender and by the time he was re-signed we had a fourth.
El Hawli was re-signed whilst injured (his second one with a long layoff) and was in and out of the seniors before that.
Setterfield as I said above.

Jones for 2 years made a little bit of sense. We know he's okay up front and okay on the wing and there's an obvious space that he can potentially fill in defence if he gets his body right. The others are far more bizarre

Agree he needs to do it at AFL level when he gets the chance.
But feel he is more at home at the club now, (invited list to his on draft night) been on the list, got an extension, had some nice highlights when came on as sub, has failed to put a full match together. limited opportunities.

with Huss, Kako, El-Hawli feel they will all bring each other up a level. Especially if they can connect play on field.

Saad offers line breaking pace which we lack. He has a point of difference over the others.

Just wondering where SEH was hyped last year?
No hype in our pre season training thread. One mention in the HS pre Christmas as being one of the better players in one of the late match Sims.
One mention by someone from blitz as being best 22.
Other than that there was not much.
In my reports he was mainly quiet and I mentioned Lual probably beat him in another where both had low possessions.
Nothing hyping him up in his thread.
Maybe it was somewhere else by my memory of his pre season last year was he came of surgery so had a slowish build up before Christmas and joined the match Sim in the last couple. Then he was pretty quiet early on in January before improving as they went along.
Think most of the hype was from his first game and the good quarter he played.
As far as this year goes he has been better so far. Has improved his fitness. Came into pre season injury free.
One of his issues has been consistency in running out games and quarters.
Where it goes who knows but right now he is clearly better physically than he has been and that is not a big shock given it is only his second pre season.
