Social Science Going off the grid.

Anyone done it? Am seriously considering it. 10-20 acres. Bush. Solar/wind power. Rain tanks. No phone lines.
No thanks, my internet addiction need satisfying.

How did you do it? How far did you take it?
Keep in mind it was easier in the 90's than it is in the 00's and 10's to do such a thing in your native western country.
These days you'd have to do it in a backwater asian/etc country.
I mean off the grid and reinvent oneself.
Take root in a more isolated region of a state.
Just basically worked for cash, kept away from the city, got in with a local, become part of "the family" so to speak, years pass by, the locals know you as so-and-so, soon enough you blend in and no one cares.
My off the grid wasn't entirely living in a hut in the woods, no electricity, etc.
I just vanished from my former live(s), and created a new one in a more remote region.

Your never off grid
Batterys need replacing so do panels eventually
Its cheaper to be on grid if you are near the wires.
I have friends who are 100% solar water and compost toilet
Im connected but am solar hot water 100%, solar power 50%,tank water 100%

People in my youth (50's-60's) used to regularly go off the grid for multitudes of reasons.
Mainly ditching their wives/children and starting a new life.
Taking up a new identity (again starting a new life, fleeing the constraints/pains of their current ones).
Or sinister reasons like evading police, etc.
You could merely relocate to a town 20 miles away and start a new life with new people and never have to worry about seeing people from the past or having the past catch up to you.
Just not as feasible these days...global community, internet, social media, cctv camers, photo id's and the like, etc.

Toilet paper will be the coin of the realm if society collapses, or so I hear. Stockpile that shit!

There is something beautiful about waking up at dawn surrounded by forrest, close enough to the sea to smell it. knowing that the sun and rain provide you with all the water and energy you need, then going out after breakfast to chop wood for the stove.

Assuming OP is from Melbourne.

I went camping in Forrest* down in the Otways not too far from Apollo Bay. There is some awesome places to go off grid around there, although it would be bitterly cold in the winter. If you're internet addiction needs feeding, for some reason there was 3G reception pretty much everywhere we hiked as well.

I could see myself going off-grid for everything but would need some form of internet, even though I'm sure in the eyes of the "off grid community" that's basically sacrilegious. But if I was being true to myself the chances of my actually going through with going off grid - minimal. I need too much stimulation.

I think I'd be more of a chance to go psuedo off grid. Have a house in the city but was completely solar powered, rain tanks provided for my water and grow my own vegetables and fruit. The only connection would be phone for internet and (unfortunately) I'm not sure I can completely forego the convenience of super markets. I don't know about Oz but I was always read about some US states where it is illegal not to be hooked up to the cities electricity supply. Not sure how legit those reports are though.

*Not a forrest, a place called Forrest, although it was also basically a forrest so it's appropriately named.... https://goo.gl/maps/4R6ytbuok1M2

I don't want narb do it for altruistic reasons. I think the worlds about to go down the shitter. Massively. Combination of illuminati, Freemasons, biblical prophecy being fulfilled at rapid pace - Russia, Iran, USA - there's some heavy shit coming. We had 4 blood moons last year for the first time in centuries. To most this is appocalyptic babble - I get that. And I'm rational, have a great life and job. I'm preparing for when-if shit goes down. It'll be a secluded hideaway that's self sufficient. Possibly have a bunker. I may never need it or use it. Worse case scenario is I have a bush retreat driving distance from some epic swell with plenty of fishing and kangaroos to eat.

Would absolutely do it. Would have to be near the coast though and that would limit options due to rich folk having a serious hard on for anything overlooking water even though they'd never put a foot on the sand.

In SA you don't even have to be hooked up to be sent a bill and legally required to pay it. The argument is they provide the service, whether you want it or not. That then means you pay the piper. You can put the property in the name of a company and pre-pay the bill each year.

Going off the grid can happen. Just let your family know what you plan to do so they wont file a Missing Persons report.

If you don't want to pay electricity etc then don't own property. Have plenty of cash or live somewhere you can self subsist. Ocean, River Scrub. But the same food day after day can be tedious. Hence the money. Don't poach or steal sheep or cattle. A mate is going to go semi off the grid. Boat car scuba gear and just dive each day until a shark gets him.
