Will no doubt cop it from a few posters questioning the decision to play the extra ruckman, but his support of big H was great. Tried hard all night and was very hard done by the umpires on a few occasions. Getting back from off the ground to lay that tackle after the umpire called advantage surely should have been rewarded. Then the 50m against him when Brogan marked was rubbish. Just followed the ball over the boundary when it looked like the mark had been spoiled anyway  If he keeps his spot in the team and can keep Petrie in a key position and allow Hamish to spend some time in the forward line, it really gives us some options. Good stuff Todd

I agree, he looked at home rucking against Lade and Brogan, has great hands, didn't get alot of the ball but tried hard and contributed in the tight clenches

He certainly did.

His disposal was good and his hit outs were as well.:thumbsu:

I've been against playing the 4 big guys but it did seem to work against Port.

Well sort of anyway cause Wayne "Buddy" Hale is playing like a Hat Rack on Crack at the minute and even though he kicked 2 goals I thought he was shit once again.:(

It was pleasing to see 2 of our big guys at times going up for the ruck. I wanted all 4 to do so but yah can't win them all.:(

Liked some of he's taps. Definitely is very handy when it comes to that. Also did free up H to spend some more time up forward.

I'd say we should stick with it when the conditions are right, like tonight but look to drop one of the talls if we happen to encounter conditions like we did against the Dogs.

The too tall thing is a stupid myth. We had a side that was only marginally taller than Port.

We just have had too many medium sized players without any pace and people think adding more medium sized players without pace is going to help any, it doesn't. Guys with genuine pace like Wells and Campbell coming in made a huge difference.

You need some with genuine pace but you also need targets. For most of the game we did a lot better in terms of generating run, the last 5 minutes seemed a lot like previous weeks, there wasn't much run and we were losing clearance after clearance but overall it was a significantly better effort.

If we can move the ball quickly then our chance of kicking a score is much improved with tall options and

You can go into games being too tall. Zvim you are being delusional if you can't admit that.

Agreed.

I don't think I saw a ball-up where Lade or Brogan simply went for the ball. Every time, they looked for their opponent first, and initiated either pushing or wrestling.

I thought the umps were supposed to penalise ruckmen who don't make the ball their first objective.

:confused::confused::confused:

I reckon if we lost today people would've come out and said we were too tall considering the speed of Port Adelaide etc etc. It's crap.
Assumptions are fantastic but the bottom line is that you can go into a match too top heavy, tall, big, huge and thus get over run.

There's no doubt about that Z. Tonight however, Goldy was magnificent in his role. Hamish had a very tough ask going up against Brogan and Lade, and did well himself, but couldn't have possibly sustained that effort without Goldy coming in and performing as he did. Top effort :thumbsu:

Goldy looked like a bloody praying mantis at times, he looked THAT huge! We were excellent tonight around the stoppages and our ruckmen had a big influence in that. Goldy was great!

What you have said is spot on. However Ztas has it in his head that it is a myth that you can go into a match "too tall".

Maybe we can bring in Josh Smith and Nathan Grima for Campbell and Thomas next week and strech the Cats for height.:thumbsu:

:thumbsu: - Goldstein.

I haven't been totally convinced by him but if he can keep playing like he did last night then he could be a very good player.
With his basketball background you'd expect him to be pretty agile and good at the taps... which he is starting to show.

I was impressed with the way he 'hit up' leading players along half forward on 2 occasions. Once was to Warren in the last quarter with a bit of pressure on him.

Some of his palm work was sublime (similar things have been said about The Other Dean at times tho) and he made Brogan and Lade look second-rate for periods with his work at ruck contests.
I am surprised the poster who talked up the Four Big Men of the Apocalypse is not all over this thread.
