Rory puts RM at number 3 on the sandbelt. Not sure I agree with his take. Seems to think KH and presumably Vic(doesn’t mention the courses) haven’t been compromised by today’s pro distances but RM has

He did say Victoria

Australian Golf Passport - who I reckon are better raters - had 7 Mile at #3!

Sounds like they've built something really special down there. And so close to Hobart Airport too!

When Mike Clayton first walked the pine tree infested site he reportedly said to Mat Goggin something along the lines of, “even if you eff this up, it’ll still be the 5th best course in Australia”.

The Australian Golf Passport guys jumped on a podcast with No Laying Up and they were saying how a lot of people from Melbourne and Sydney will fly down early, head straight to 7 Mile Beach and still be back home for dinner

7MB is extremely good guys.

It's difficult though - perhaps a little too much so at present. Like Barnbougle in the early days they need to clear out the marram a bit more and widen some of the playing corridors.

It's very different to Barnbougle, CW etc. A lot more subtle with less knock your socks off drama. Beautiful location and masterfully routed.

You played it? Or just had a good gander?

Once the initial hype dies down a bit, I reckon I’ll do just that…

The Australian Government is selling off a bunch of unused/under-used defence force land.

Included in the big packages of land that are being sold are the golf courses at HMAS Cerberus (on the Eastern Shore of the Mornington Peninsula), and the one at Swan Island (near Queenscliffe).

We might have a couple new golf courses hitting our city in the coming years.

I’d be pretty amazed if they are re-developed as golf courses.

I hate to lose any course, but Cerberus is’nt flash.

Swan Island on the other hand is a cool little course in a great location. Real shame about that one.

Cerberus will surely be converted into residential housing but not sure of what alternate uses could be had on Swan Island?

Why couldn’t swan island be developed into (pricey) residential land?
I am very much speaking out of my behind, but I am not sure that parcel of land would be able to be profitably converted by developers. Not to mention I reckon there might be some environmental concerns. But that is all driven by my hope that golf courses survive.

I have fond memories of going there over a number of years, so I’m very much with you in hoping it survives.

Club not blindsided - hopes to buy!
The Queenscliff Golf Club says it was not blindsided by today’s Federal Government announcement to sell the course and is hoping to be in a position to buy it.
In a message to members, President Brad Teal said the club had been aware for some time of the Defence Estate Audit and proposed sale of Swan Island assets.
The club had already held talks with senior officials, including Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland and Corangamite MP Libby Coker, and would establish a working party “as a priority” with a view to purchasing the course, he said.
“The club holds a licence with Defence, and as noted in the attached briefing paper, Defence will engage with the existing tenant, Queenscliff Golf Club, regarding the purchase of the western side of the island.
“Obviously, in time, we will know more, but I want to let all members and supporters of Queenscliff Golf Club know that we will work hard to achieve ownership of the site to protect the future of our club," Mr Teal said.
“There will be much chatter about the future, but I can only say on this first day that this could well be the greatest thing to happen to our club,” his message concluded.

Cool.
