How was it? It's definitely a course on my radar for trying to get to this year.

Absolutely outstanding. Fairways in mint conditions, greens true, bunkers great.
And the best two days of weather you could possibly get. 35pts Sunday, 29 today after a night on the gas. Clubhouse reno is magnificent, they’ve done a great job.

That's fantastic.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, and I hope you don't mind me asking; assuming you're not a member since you said it was your first visit, how'd you go about getting a weekend tee time? Did you go with a member? Or did you stay overnight in the guest house?

Stayed in the clubhouse. Ate there too, which was quality.
I’ve played there a few times, this was the first one post the reno.
I was part of a group of about 20 on annual trip there.
Short answer is, I don’t know how to get on. I thought it was open to book for anyone.

Ahhhh cool. Appreciate the answer, and that makes sense. That sounds like it would have been a fantastic little trip.

Visitors are allowed to book but according to their website, basically only on weekdays, and only in the afternoon on certain weekdays.

Should get a BF group together to do all 5 and have a sweep on what courses people get killed at. Reckon I'm making a sassy comment on the prison course and getting shivved.

Hey folks
Has anyone here played Growling Frog in the last 12 months or so?
Mates and I have a foursome tee time booked for 8am tomorrow that I have really been looking forward to, but I just received an after-hours automated text message that now has me a little concerned;

Because I'm a beginner my handicap is 30. This text message makes it sound like I have to book a course caddie to play with us? Also, we aren't allowed to wear hats or shorts? I thought Growling Frog was a public course? A nice course to be sure, but this sounds pretty excessively strict.

Because it's after-hours I can't call them to clarify and confirm so I'm hoping someone here can help.

Is this all pretty standard at the nicer courses? I've played places like Kooringal which is private and didn't encounter anything like this;

Growling Frog is a public course.

Haven’t the faintest idea why half of that shit is in there TBH.

Hole attendants. One shot per bunker. Caddie.

Bizarre.

Right?

I HAVE to assume this is wildly out-dated or something. Or an April fools joke that they forgot to turn off on April 2nd...

Had a mate play there on Sunday, hes a hacker, wears shorts and there was no caddie requirements.

That's complete BS if true

If they ask - simply deny receiving the email.

Does the website have any of these dreams?

You sure its not one of your mates playing a joke

You know what, this is my current working theory.

I don't know how they've done it, but I'm going to assume this is the case.

And honestly I respect it. Because they got me.

Okay pitchforks away.

An idiot mate in my group chat has just confirmed it was him.

Well played.

Apologies all. Hahaha.

I reckon a mate is having you on.

Arrived in St Andrews Sunday, straight to the New Course clubhouse to register for the single player ballot for the Old Course.
Then up to Fairmont to play the Kittocks course. Beautiful course, great views of St Andrews town. Hardly anyone on course, and for good reason. About 1 degree, howling wind and rain. Didn't play well, lost a lot of balls. Couple of holes into the wind were just about impossible.
Message at about 5 past 5 saying I was successful for the next day's Old Course ballot, tee time 3.50pm. I declined the offer. Too late in the day for me weather conditions indicated extremely windy, already had Kingsbarns booked for 10ish, and was confident with 7 more opportunities I should be good.
Yesterday (Monday), Kingsbarns. Weather predictions were all wrong - was a magnificent day. Played with a Chilean couple, nice people.
What a course, stunning views on every hole. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff, fairways and greens immaculate. Played well until the last hole where I lost a ball and hit a treble, ended with 19 over.
Pay through the nose to play on it, but would do it again with no hesitation.
Back to the clubhouse registered for Tuesday's ballot. 5.05, message came through - success, 12,30 tee off.
Finished a couple of hours ago, great experience. Beautiful day, in shorts and just a shirt and quarter zip. Unfortunately the wind came up on the back 9 and made things a lot tougher. Finished 20 over, lipped out putt on the 18th. Great feeling walking up the 18th with putter in hand
Played with a couple of Scots who couldn't believe how lucky I was to get on on my first visit, they were from Dundee and their first time playing the course.
Credit card's taking a hammering.

Good morning Peeps. I returned to golf 3 years ago after a 15 year absence. My home course is Golden Beach in Sth Gippy. fantastic course run by volunteers. 9 greens with 18 tee boxes, so effectively an 18 hole course. My golfing visitors are really impressed with the course, I love it.

Anyhow, I'm moving unfortunately to Phillip Island in a month and am going to make Cowes my new club.

What are your thoughts on Cowes Golf Club?

No idea about Cowes - but after reading of your nett 65 in the monthly medal, I'd recommend getting more cards in to get that mark down before the move or put the handbrake on in your first few rounds there. ;)

I'm a bit slow Sideswipe. Not sure what you mean? I've always played for the love of golf and to get better in my own mind. I don't really care for handicaps.

Just making a joke about handicaps - hence the smiley emoji, which I personally dislike but use so a post might not be misconstrued.

Turning up at a new club and shooting nett 65s might not be the best way to make new friends.

How do you measure getting better other than monitoring your handicap?

Handicaps, I'm getting used to recently. I don't think I'm going to make many friends at Cowes anyway!! From the little I've heard, it's a tougher and longer course, so I think I may blow out pretty quickly.
