Good footy brains...

Lovely work PK, especially love the tackle at the end on Boomer. Yeo saw that it was marked but ran on and continued to watch the play and turned and hit him. We've got some good young kids with good footy brains!

The above is from ‘PK’s 2012 Player highlights thread – that I wish not to derail…

So true brother sean!

I’m going to grab that ‘footy brains’ baton and run with it… running left, no really… way left - going to go so bloody way left field that if it was a geographical point on the earth it would now be the first paddock to your right. [think about it!]

What the heck, it’s off season, ‘almost/kinda’ topical if linked to the draft night on Thursday and TomFC has been whinging about not being able to get teeth into any sort of ‘indepth’ conversation, of late.

So, I ask him and anyone else who cares to walk on the wild-side for a day or two… To forget about a theoretical Moneyball statistical footy team, I’m asking you to think of a “Mensa-Ball” squad. But wait, there’s more!

I ask you to think not of a GWS two-draft years of twenty odd 1st round draft picks but more of a team of say twenty odd 2nd and 3rd rounders… but these guys fall into the top 1% of footy smart brainiacs.

No! Really think about this… coach only has to explain a game plan once, players have confidence in the coaches ‘group think’. The runner only has to come out to receive messages from the players….

Would it work, or would hell freeze over before evolution could perfect a DNA with a left brain/right brain balance of both brains and brawn?

Translate: Pick a team of blokes with footy smarts who weren't taken with high draft picks. Is that right?

I'll have a crack. I left out father-son selections.

B: Patfull Rutten Enright
HB: Fisher Richards Scotland
C: Swan Boyd Rockliff
HF: SJohnson Goodes Darling
F: Le Cras Petrie Milne
R: Cox Priddis Mitchell
I: Chapman Swallow O'Keefe
S: Harvey

Harder than I thought. Very difficult to fill the KPPs - the ones I considered "smart" - Brown, Pavlich, Glass - were all early draft selections or father-sons.

A couple of guys in there who are footy smart but have done some dumb things off field - eg Swan and Scotland.

Pretty decent effort. Ben Reid should get a look in at CHB IMO, I see Richards as more of an honest goer than a football brain.

Ben Reid was a top 10 draft pick and so didn't qualify. I do agree that he's a pretty smart footballer though.

Richards is in there because: (a) he seems to read the play really well, allowing him to get to more contests; (b) he appears to be to be a very good judge of when the spoil and when to mark; (c) he competes very well despite appearing slightly undersized, which says to me that he plays pretty smart.

My bad, must have missed that part. I reckon Bob Murphy would be right up there too, but not at CHB obviously.

Disturbing lack of Black in your team, POBT. Picked in the 30s, from memory?

Love the bloke but not sure I'd have him in my side these days ahead of the guys named. Maybe as sub ahead of Harvey?

Yeah, fair enough. Harvey has more sub attributes that Black, so I'd keep him there. Looking at his other regular haunts, I can't see him slotting in for Priddis, Mitchell, Johnson or Darling.

Ummm.... love the way this has been thought through, what about... ;)

Surely gotta give James Brain a run blynd_freddie
haha - very good!! but all the above have actually played VFL/AFL games from late 1800's through to the modern era, sadly James [Sydney swans ressies] lacks experience...

Or... are you alluding to me giving my brain a run? :D

Would be remiss of me if I didn't respond to your initial reply POBT [& to put ceebee's mind to rest]

Was hard with the KPP [and might have cheated a little re Lloyd] and think of them in their prime.
Oh and 10 of these players went on to show their brains as captains of their clubs.

Ahhh... looks like there is no affinitive black and white correctness but it still doesn't make me wrong. :p

Having said that it certainly seems an oversight on my part, another rookie promotion captain would definitely strengthen my team/point.
