For all the talk that goes on about the ANZAC day game going to the previous years Grand Finallists I can never resist pointing out good friday is just sitting there, begging for some entertainment. The previous years GF game, being at maybe the home ground of the runner-up, would be a super event on Good Friday. If it was in Victoria, the Kiddie's Hospital could get involved, and nobody could sneeze at that either.

Surely christians could handle a game of footy. I have spent Easter this year in the UK for my wedding, and Good Friday, while a holiday is a day where there is a plethera of entertainment for people.

Please don't tell me me the regardless of the day's Christian significance, it's just nice to have a day without footy. There are shitloads of day's without footy. Monday-Thursday every single week for starters, and then you have October to February every year as well.

it should be Tigers Vs Dogs i reckon

two large footy clubs in Melbourne goin at it

or hawks

Dogs and hawks are two of the smaller clubs......blues and tigers are the biggest outside of collingwood and essendon who have anzac day. Id be happy to give up the season opener to have Carlton vs Richmond on good friday

Yeah, that's just what we need: another "fixed" part of the fixture...

I'm sick of all the bullshit in the AFL compromised draw. I'd prefer to see no more "Lock it in, Eddie" sweetheart deals. I want to see the fixtures rotated so all teams play each other the same number of times over a three year period. It stinks that Collingwood plays Essendon and Carlton twice every year and everyone just accepts it.

I personally don't think Good Friday is much of a plum. People go away that day. Hawthorn have lobbied the AFL for years for Carlton vs Hawthorn on Good Friday, but this never got any traction. Not sure why. Who gives a shit about Christians in the year 2011? Maybe Demetriou doesn't want people to forget that his son was nailed to the cross.

Anyway, the thread starter does not get it. The other Victorian clubs have every right to play on ANZAC day. It's not all about Collingwood. Why should the same two clubs monopolize this day just because they draw the biggest crowd? Who made that a rule?

There would be more people outside the ground trying to raise money for the good Friday appeal than inside watching the game.

Except the Kid's hospital appeal is held in Victoria, not NSW.
Besides, the Swans have a decent base of support in Sydney and would attract a greater number of fans than any NRL match in Sydney played on the same day.

I'm not quite sure about that

We go alright as yeterday would attest, certainly more than the season opener

Geographically North Melbourne and Carlton are either side of the Royal Childrens Hospital.

You know, because Essendon and Richmond "wear the dreamtime colours" and Collingwood and Essendon both fought against the Ottoman Empire while the other clubs sat home.

We also had a little bit to do with Fridays a while ago if I recall.

???? :confused::confused:

Carlton V Geelong V Hawthorn - Get a cracker crowd at the G which has the real potential to continually draw a big crowd going forward.

Obviously I mean 2 of those 3 teams.

W.A. had a evening WAFL game this Good Friday just gone and got a crowd of over 5000. And there was not one skerrick of protest or condemnation from anyone. Mark Harvey said on the news the next day that Perth is ready for an AFL Good Friday match, as shown by the attendance. Would love Perth to be the first...:thumbsu:

With all of the Collingwood and Essendon fans claiming ownership of the ANZAC fixture due to their nurturing of into today's blockbuster (which I think is fair), surely North deserve to host any Easter Friday match.

Clubs should look to see where there's a gap and go to the AFL with the idea, and strong proposal about community involvement etc. I would be happy for any club to go and get themselves a big marquee game on Good Friday, but I think that after 15 years, it would cheapen the ANZAC day tradition that Ess & Coll have built.

as a Christian i do.

I dont have a problem with a game being played on Good Friday and you will find most Christians wouldnt.

Just off topic Chewy did you celebrate Easter by getting together with your family?

You're forgetting that ANZAC Day and Easter don't normally fall on the same weekend, and won't again for something like 85 years.

Edit: I stand corrected. In the eastern hemisphere, it will occur again in 2019 and 2022.

I don't see any relationship between someone playing on Good Friday, and Anzac day. On a normal easter weekend there are 5 days for games to be spread across. That gives ample opportunity for clubs to have stand alone match ups. They just need to be united and have a strong case for the AFL so that it can't be refused.
