Problem is until we get croad & jacobs back I think the feeling is we need to get some experience down in the backline.

Agree, even with Croad and Jacobs in the team, its still a problem. If we are going to win a flag over the next 3-5 years we need Hodge to play the vast majority of games in the guts.

Hopefully Ellis can develop into the quality HBF'er over the next few years, many recruiters have touted he could potentially become.

I thought our performance was ok,i thought our structure going into our forward half was to predictable and no one to present just forward of centre half forward.I do not no what Clarko's idea was there.
I thought Crawf's effort was great all night along with Mitchell,Hodge,Young,Gilham,Boyle and i thought Tucky's first game,showed he has great composure.Sewell,Murph,Buddy,and Lewis where servicable.
I thought the forwards in Roughie ,Mattie Little and Willo were slaughtered by our set up,just to predictable.Nice goal by Matty Little outside fifty and presented well but went to ground to easy.I feel Zac did well on Fev,he did his job,so give the kid a break,thats what Collingwoods Prestie does every week and he does not get the drumming that our Napolean Dynamite gets.McGlynn i am sorry just does not cut the mustard and i don't think he ever will,missed an easy goal and turned ball over and they kicked another,just to costly.Renouf very raw and Mossy showed he will make a player down the track.Clarke was terrible i would like to no who his opponent was.Birchall just,expected after a new contract,Bateman ordinary,Taylor and Campbell did nothing around the ground.But we still have the youngest list in the league.Go Hawks

To add to this, I thought Zac played a good game for his experience. Kept Fev to two goals. Last year Fev kicked 8 against us in Round 19.

The Extractor was fantastic. Crawf was great. Boyle did well. Our defenders did well for most of the night. Some players went missing during the night and we missed Campbell Brown.

Not a fan of the gameplan and I hope it was put in as an experiment. We needed forwards around the 50 to link up our attacks.

I love the development, with our Pritchard and Hudson x2 plus probably others that I'm not aware of. Now Birchall and Mitch Thorp. We owe the apple isle, beautiful playing surface. Our young inexperienced fwd setup didn't really mesh. The fast leading of Willow seems to have been sacrificed by the coach for getting some experimentation into the others up there. But Little suffered in the marking contests by the bullocking of Roughy trying to take the "specky" at every attempt. What's the point of that without Moss, McGlynn and Willo at least somewhere to feed off the pack as crumbers? Boyle an Roughy to take that mark at the top af the goal square with flank leads of Little and Willo would have been more cohesive. A glaring difference between confidence levels was Carlton's 9pointer scored be Murphy after taking a couple of steps, as opposed to Heath Scotland kicking it out on the full, the resultant free being taken by Young. But he choses to redirect and consequently surrendered possession at chf, instead of taking a shot from the boundary on his preferred side when the whole of York Park and the TEN viewing public would know that the scoring distance was a gimme to him. Experience against a lot of displays of uncertainty, nerves and fumbling. The composure of our man Murph is tremendous, he was made to play our great game, so too Gilly...ZAC is here to stay! Neitz and Fevola........Zac Dawson has done himself proud.

But we have been playing there for a number of years now and have just made a 5 year commitment to tasmania. We have also had a strong connection with tasmania over a number of years having players like the hudsons & pritchard in our team.

As a result it is generally considered the Hawks get good support in tasmania. - this is one of the reasons why we got the sponsorship agreement with Tasmanian Government.

I also always notice when we play in tasmania we get very good crowd support (usually when the opposition scores you don't here anything) and considering we were playing the blues who I don't think have ever played there the support they got actually was surprising.

I also was not the only one that thought this - it was also stated by the Ch10 commentators last night and they were just talking about it before on SEN.

We lacked intensity. Very disappointing.

Heard Bateman had been over in Perth for a family wedding on Friday night. Flew back from Perth Saturday. Hardly the best preparation for a game. Heard the game on radio and he seemed to start off well, but heard little of him after that. Wasn't sure whether he was on the ground or not.

I noticed this last week with us also, just wondering if anybody else did, the control of our forwards when the ball was at the other end. Last week we had 2 push up to the wing (one each side) 2 push up to defence and two remain in attack, which work very well, last night however, we had 4 remain in the forward 50 where, as the commentators mentioned, there wa sno options in the midfield for when we got the ball in defence, forcing us to handball and run where we would usually be able to kick.

So that has achieved a slight increase in the number of young Hawthorn supporters in the state. I don't see how that is meant to mean Hawthorn should always have the majority of support on a nuetural venue? Tasmania is a state with no football team, people grow up supporting sides like Carlton, Essendon, Collingwood, Richmond.

As a result it is generally considered the Hawks get good support in tasmania. - this is one of the reasons why we got the sponsorship agreement with Tasmanian Government.

The club does get pretty good support down here, nowhere as much as the bigger clubs, like Essendon, Collingwood, Richmond or Carlton, but after those 4 Hawthorn would be the next most supported club.

Hawthorn normally play sides like Port or Fremantle when playing in Tasmania. Those clubs have almost no supporters here so it's no surprise that Hawthorn have more support in those games.

Before 2002 no club ever played games in Tasmania. Tasmanians grew up supporting their favorite team from watching the TV so explain exactly why you think Carlton would not have any supporters who were willing to goto the game?

It seems to me that the poor old Carlton supporters who normally have to travel to Melbourne for the weekend to see their side play live would jump at the opportunity of watching their club play a game in Tasmania.

I thought I would just post some thoughts on the game. Had cricket on saturday so I had to tape the game and watched it yesterday afternoon.

Firstly on the gameplan I think it has some merrit and with a little bit of tinkering it could work. I think keeping players in the forward 50 at all times is a great idea, 4 players might be a little to much (seemed to get in each others way and kept leading into each others space) but should always 2 in there is a good idea. Last year we got lost at times when everyone had pushed back and we had no direction. I think the 4 in the 50 may only be for the NAB Cup, I would think there will be some changes to that next week against freo.

I think you will find that once Dixon is back in the team he will provide that presenting option to the HFF and Wings with some help from Boyle. I also think Franklin will get more of a license to push up the ground and provide a linking option. Roughy and Willo close to goal, Roughy has got the tools to kick big bags and Willo doesn't look comfortable any further than 50 out from goal.

Backline looked shakey but I don't think it had anything to do with Dawson. I thought he was OK he lacks confidents a bit of nous but that will come with experience, I think he has all the other abilities to make it at full back, height, speed, courage and a bit of mongrel (I liked the way he put Carrazo I think into the post). Birchall was woeful but you need to expect that from young guys, his decision making was terrible and he was slow to release the ball. Sewell was worse than Birchall when he was playing back again his decision making was ordinary. Murphy was rusty and Hodge was poor when he was back. Gilham was really good and he has proved me wrong, I watched him a few times for Box Hill early last year and he didn't look like he would make it. He was being out marked regularly by VFL players and I didn't think he would step up but he has been really solid down back.

Midfield was fairly even on the night, I thought we probably didn't give there mids enough respect. Our guys seemed to do there own thing and didn't play accountable when they had possession. Murphy and Stevens were given to much space when they went forward and they set up a lot of Carlton's scoring opportunities. Mitch, Crawf and Young are good running forward but they need to play more accountable when the ball is turned over. Young is a great kick, his pass to Boyle in the second quarter was perfect thats how the ball should come into our talls, in front so they can jump into it.

Taylor and Campbell dominated the taps but were redundant around the ground, I think there ruck work will be fine this year. They need to get dangerous and make there man chase them sometimes. I like Taylor forward he presents well and always works for front spot. I think they need to rotate depending on the oposition ruckmen when Ackland, Everitt, Lade, Fraser ruck Campbell needs to go in to follow them forward and when Sandilands, Richards, Brogan, Hudson, Rix and Nobel are in Taylor can push forward on them.

On the young guys Tuck looked fine but needs more time to develop, Moss was really impressive his attack on the ball was great and his decision making was fine he just had trouble executing. Little just looks out of his depth at the moment but he will make it, I have seen him play a lot of games at Box Hill and he only needs 6 touches a game to be dangerous because he will end up kicking 4-5 goals. Renouf is a work in progress but he is a good size and has some abilities that can be worked on.

That's all I got out of the game it is only pre season comp so a lot of the guys don't look like they get out of 3rd gear. Croady, Vanders, Smith, Jacobs, Brown and Ozzie will make a difference.

It’s a stretch, but at a guess playing games at Aurora = home ground advantage = more likely of getting wins = on field success = finals = premierships = new supporters and members

As I've said before, I'm not doubting the contract has the potential to reduce the growth of the Hawthorn brand in Melbourne, but to date there have no signs of a significant contraction in Hawk support or membership in Melbourne or abroad. In fact, there is evidence that our membership and support base is actually growing regardless of the deal.

I am sure there weren't to many 100 years olds at the game - although you might be right about the starved carlton supporters.

Though all you are doing is suggesting possible reasons why there were more carlton supporters - it doesn't explain why they outnumbered hawk supportors.

Nor does it change the fact that I thought it was surprising as did a number of members of the media.
