To be honest, I thought he was pretty average last night.

I had money on him to get the most possessions on the ground, so I was watching Swanny like a hawk for the entire game. His ball use was appalling.

I love Swanny, and he obviously willed himself to get the ball last night which is a skill in itself, and he did some great things like kick that goal and roost that torp... but he turned the ball over like a madman. I wouldn't have him in the votes.

the nature of the game, was get it and kick it. Unfortunately, it took a while for the Collingwood blokes to catch on. Just keep pumping it forward.

You are on drugs TRS if you don't think he was in the votes. Take into account eh sheer amount of football he won, and where he won it, and you can't be serious.

I guess I'm on drugs then. By the way, the nature of the game was "get it and kick it" when we had the breeze. When we didn't, the nature of the game was "retain possession, hold it in, waste the clock". Swanny had the one strategy in both instances.

Obviously you know more than one of the greatest men to play the game matthews and every reporter and radio station who gave him the best you are just like the rest too critical considering he kicked more than others in that wind there was a chance for turnovers watch the second quarter again. His clearance work when it matter was important, his tackling and his goal involvement were good when the game was there to be won. Its people like you the club does not need supporting their players. He turned the ball over like a madman an exaggeration watched the game again this morning he lead the way and the young chargers followed. Was the only one who could hold down Rodan.

Winty

:p

I think he mongrelled alot of football last night, but his second and third efforts when he did, stood out.. And that 2nd quarter alone will get him 3 votes no question. He just willed us back into the contest...

Breeze or no breeze, scoreboard pressure speaks louder than anything. The way they did what they did was a result of Swan.

Oh please. The club doesn't need me as a supporter because I would have had Swan in our 6th-10th best players on the night instead of the 1st-5th?

What is this, the bleeding hearts club?

As for Matthews, yeah he was a great player and a great coach... you are aware that people have disagreements all the time in football, aren't you? That doesn't mean anyone claims to know any more than anyone else, it's just a difference of opinion.

Grow up, FFS.

Swan was our only player who did anything in the first quarter, and dragged us back into the game in the second.

His ability to keep his feet and win 1 vs 1 is second to none. One thing I particularly noticed was that after Rodan had gone on a burst with his 2 goals, Swan went to him, and directed Blair to take another opponent, and subsequently Rodan was well held while Swanny was on him.

I rate Swan as better than Judd these days, Judd's kicking has been atrocious lately, while Swan's kicking is not elite by any means, his other attributes make up for this.

Champion.

TRS has for many years shown himself to be an excellent judge. He easily deserves his opinion and respect for his opinion. Without question.

He watched him possibly closer than anyone last night.

Swannie had 39 possies and 7 clangers ( Herald Sun)

There's room for both opinions to be right.

Maybe compared to his normal self, he did turn the ball over a lot, but equally, the weight of possession and the role he and Didak had in the pivotal second qtr, was sensational.

And that just sums up Swan's value...even when he has a night where he is below HIS standard in some ways, he is STILL one of best, if not BOG!!

Like some others, I believe we may well have lost that game without him last night, despite him turning it over a bit ( not hard on a windy night, whoever you are)

Clearly now is an elite player.

simple fact is that if swan didnt play last night we wouldnt have won that game. yes he had some turnovers but his ball winning ability and gut running more than made up for that. he is one player u could never question as far as im concerned, an absolute gun

i'm in love with the Great Dane Swan more and more with each passing game, if that is possible :P

After a quiet-ish start to the season, Swanny is running himself into a nice form in the critical part of the season. Remember how he was injured / burnt out come finals time last year, and that (along with injuries to Pendles etc) we finished 2009 in a disappointed fashion?

I reckon this year we have learnt our lessons and are managing our players better. I have high hopes that we'd go deep into the finals again this year, and that unlike previous years, we would give the flag a real tilt this time round.

Carn the Pies!

I thought he was by far the most influential player on the ground against Port. He doesn't get mentioned in the same breath as Judd and Hodge as leaders but his leadership is right up there with these guys and could be a very good captain.

He had a bit about him on AFL Insiders tonight, about his workrate. They showed a nice bit of footage from behind the goals showing him basically running flat out from one end of the ground to the other to receive the ball. Just reminds you that the reason he gets so many disposals is just sheer gut running and hard work, what a star.

That footage tonight was stunning.

For those that didn't see it, it showed a passage of play in a game at the G (maybe vs Essendon) where Maxwell takes a mark in the back pocket, with Swan and Pendles close by. Maxwell then kicks to Shaw, who transfers play to the southern stand wing where another play (?) marks the ball. You then see Swan come into picture from right of screen, like a train running full steam towards the bondary. He gets the ball kicked to him perfectly, marking on the chest flat out near the boundary. Then you see Pendles enter the screen from the right (centre of ground) also, and Swan kicks to him in a similar fashion to the kick to Swan.

Pendles turns quickly, kicks it over an Essendon's defenders head to Cloke who marks 25 out on the boundary. Cloke swings around and centres the ball just past the goalsquare on the opposite side where Maxwell marks (who started the whole thing only seconds earlier).

The whole footage lasts about 30 seconds, and was filmed from behind the goals by North Melbourne (as explained by Brad Scott tonight).

I know that might have been hard to read, I would love for someone who recorded it to upload it, it was stunning footage of how our interchange rotations allow our players to run "flat out" while on the field.

Yeah that play was amazing,I was sitting in the Southern stand that night and it unfurled directly in front of me. It was from the game against Essendon last year, the game Tom Cruise went to.

I'm pretty sure the player who had it out on the wing was Lockyer. He had nobody at all to kick to, I was yelling out "someone work for him!", when all of a sudden I see Swanny running across the ground to provide the option. I had no idea until tonight he had run from the last line of defence to get it, I assumed he had come straight from the interchange on the other side. To me, that would have been impressive enough, let alone running from the other end of the ground as well as the other side.
