Wow at the start of that third quarter he was playing out of his skin as a CHF:eek:

The leading, contested marking and confidence in himself was outstanding. He could very easily have three or four goals right now. I am without a doubt right now that he is the player on Adelaide's list with the most potential by a long, long way!:thumbsu:

Re: Griffen the Forward

jo you have been turning it up tonight, i've agreed with you a few times and i was gonna make a thread about this after the game!

he looks good up there, better than resting on the pine even though he is off the field right now, he creates a contest and has decent skills for a raw big man

Re: Griffen the Forward

That is why I was supportive of the retirement of Clarke. So they could bring some big men in that have some presence around the ground, he will only get better, but I am really liking what I am seeing so far.

Yeah I got bagged a bit for suggesting it's good that Clarke left and Biglands is out, if Clarke was still around then Griffen would be wasting away in the SANFL when it's clear he's a quality player. He's had a couple of bad games but that's to be expected, he was very good tonight and for once he was played up forward. A new move which reaped success.

This is the thing - Back in the Day.....Ruckmen used to score 80% of their goals during their resting time.

Yeah sure the speed of the game has changed but the principle remains.

Tonight - not only did The Griffatron take a few marks inside 50.....but it forced the tallest defender to go to him....and it was no coincidence that at the same time Bock and Charlie Brown broke the shackles and took some marks.

All the defenders are forced to "slide up an opponent" and the benefit is spread across the forward line.

Re: Griffen the Forward

Bloody oath mate, I remember the days when the ruckman would rest up in the pocket.. especially with our average forward line.. chuck a mobile big man up there and he gives us an extra option. If he doesn't mark it, chances are he won't be outmarked because he's a giant, he will bring the ball to the deck and make the defenders think/worry about him. Craigy did well with that decision.

Re: Griffen the Forward

Doesn't it help that Griffo is apparently a quick runner... bigger logs minding him might be in for a bit of a torrid time if we work the syetem properly.

Re: Griffen the Forward

He actually looks pretty good up forward. He knows how to leed and takes a fair grab. I'd be quite happy to see us pick Maric so that Griffin can play a permanent role on the forward line. Having hime there allows both Welsh and Perrie to play further up the ground where they both play their best football.

Brennan pretty much towled up Pez tonight, we'd have been in deep shit if we didnt have Griffen up there.

Re: Griffen the Forward

Rehn was always handy as a resting forward.

Some busting games at CHF in the day.

Re: Griffen the Forward

If he had his kicking boot on he would have kicked 3-4. He was a gun in that 3rd quarter. His height, mobility, recovery and marking ability WILL cause some headaches to the opposition defence. Once he puts on a bit more beef, he will be hard to stop.

Re: Griffen the Forward

Hard to see him being dropped when Maric and Meesen return, unless he gets injured or has a drastic turn in form. He's got a good leg too and is not afraid to send the ball long. A little more weight would help him in the ruck though.

Yeah and he was also capable of dropping back and taking the mark in defence which Griffen can do, he's a great all round player is Griff.. not in Rehn's league obviously but he is better around the ground than Clarke or Biglands.

Re: Griffen the Forward

He looked quiet comfortable playing there tonight... few nice marks, a good lead that was honoured, and boy does he have long arms....

Tk tsk tsk... we are just too old for this newfangled game ;)

Re: Griffen the Forward

If I were a coach of an AFL side I would be genuinely worried about the matchup issues this guy is going to cause for my side in a couple of years. His leap is absurdly good, he takes a good mark and is dangerous around the goals, he's mobile....once he puts on weight blokes won't only be dealing with all of that, they won't be able to move him either due to his size. Terrific signs with this one.

Re: Griffen the Forward

I know we have several very good young lads and all improving rapidly..take Knights for example.

But Griffin has really got me excited. Tall, quick, good kick and has a red hot go.

How good is it watching him and pondering how far he will go !

I dont care how many come back from injury, Griffin must play...how hard would it be to match up on the guy !!

Very Excited by what I see. :thumbsu:

I wish we could wave a wand and have him put a good 10-15 kilos on for next week, then he'd be the very definition of an impossible matchup.

No doubt he is exciting and no doubt his improvement has multiplied 200%

BUT I think around the break ie round 12... Maric should be back and fit, I would give Griffin a spell and a big hug :) ...then prepare him for finals

I see your point.

There is not much of the lad and he will get very sore. A few weeks off might not hurt or use him as a pitch forward off the bench, just to unbalance sides at certain periods of the game.
