Where do people Shaun Grigg in 2008?

From memory he should have been played in the pre season cup last year but Pagan was trying to win the comp so kids like him missed out on gaining valuable experience. Then when he was dominating in the 2's Pagan kept holding him back and he then broke his colorbone and remained out for most of the year until late in the season. When he did debut he was caught out a few times and benched, seems to me this kid was given no confidence by pagan from the word go. I even remember in the magizine Pagan saying he was very unlucky not to play in the NAB cup.

He was picked up at no 19 from Memory and the crows had him rated. Hopfully Ratten will gie him plenty of gam time in the pre season cup and give him the confidence that if he makes a mistake or two he won't be benched or banished from the side. it will be hard for him to be a regular player in 08 if we don't have injuiries but if he can break into the side and play half back flank for us could release walker or scotland into the middle or up the field.

Your thoughts?

When I first saw him play for VM in 2006, I instantly liked what I saw. Uses the ball well, good decision maker, and has pretty good leg speed.

As you said, he would've debuted early in 2007 had he not broken down for the Bullants. If training is any guide, then he really is in for a big 2008. Of the few times I have seen the boys train throughout the Summer, he has been impressive, and he appears to have added some bulk to his frame since our season finished back in August.

Grigg = quite achiever

i wish him all the best for season 08

hope he plays at least 10 - 15 games for us this year!!!

his pass to Setanta when playing against Kangas was a class passage, he showed his poise and skill to hit Setanta!!

I just watched that game last week, and that pass was one of the few highlights!

Looking forward to a big 2008 from Grigga!

do we know if he has officially moved to number 12 or has kept 16??

I remember him being a Vic Country boy. How's his preseason coming along?

Agree that Pagan set him back 6 months by 1) Not playing him when he was starring for the Bullies and 2) Destroying his confidence in his first game.

However I am hoping for big things and would see him as a potential first team starter once season begins. I would love to see him hold down one of the HBF roles or perhaps rotating through Wing. He is quick, good disposal but needs to build confidence and awareness.

Go Grigga

Good thread since I was thinking of starting a thread on Grigg's 2008.

I like Grigg, but I think he will struggle to play more than a handful of games next year with the inclusions of Armfield, Judd, Browne and Hadley. The side needs hardnuts such as those players who are more likely to be in and under players and defenders than the taller Grigg who is an attacking player. I'd select Anderson ahead of Grigg if we wanted a lock down player who can run with a midfielder/forward and pay close attention to his man.

But I'd rather have Grigg if we're looking for a free wheeling wingman with skill. :thumbsu:

Oops, my bad. Of course VC.
His preseason has been coming along very nicely. Have seen a few sessions myself, and in every single on of them, he has trained very well.

Has all the tools to become a class player, just at this time he has the awareness of 1AW unfortunately. Gets caught in possession or runs into tackles way too often for my liking. Fix this and it will mean BIG things for him.

Gets caught in possession - i think a lot of this can be due to the fact it was nerves and there seemed to be a lack of talk/listening.

Don't think we'll see too much of that from Grigga next year Sublime. Has been training the house down at Carlton over the Summer.

Isn't every AFL player training the house down?

A mystery why so many sides have all these great players having their best ever pre-seasons, yet they can't make the eight. :D :p

Lets not re-write history here:
  1. HE had a few good weeks in the two's, but we had also won two out of our first three games. The talk was he might have come in for the WCE game when Anderson debuted, but for his shoulder injury...........nothing to do with Pagan IIRC.
  2. Exactly what did Pagan do to "destroy" his confidence in his debut game vs Melbourne? My recollection was that when Grigg got the ball, in wide open space, for his first touch........he froze, and put himself under the pump........and not for the only time that game. A rabbit in the spotlight.........should Pagan have kept shining the light in his eyes? or take him off and have a chat, settle him down and then send him back out where.......gee whiz if he didn't get a couple of good touches and do a couple of good things............
Pagan is gone. There is no need to continually re-write history just for the sake of pissing on him.

Grigg froze all by himself. Get over it.

Having got that off my chest, I'm hoping he can get some good pre-season form. He is one guy that a lot of us have forgotten about to some degree, but is a top 20 pick in a deep draft, and could just surprise a few.
I hope he does.:thumbsu:

Can't just put it down to nerves. Awareness is a natural attribute that will kick in regardless of nerves. If someone lets nerves get to them in the heat of battle then i would have a lot to worry about his general psyche.

Admittedly i have only been to one training session this year but even then there were numerous times he got caught in possession simply because he didn't know where opposition was. Surely at training nerves and whatnot can't come into the equation. Just my observances.

As i've said all other aspects of his game are excellent and i really do hope he improves this one aspect of his game. Just saying it is an area of concern for me going into this season.
