Grundy is not Quick enough to be a leading forward looked very slow as did Schmidt today against very average side in my opinion

Disagree Pop;)

Grundy
Ninthmond were flooding and had a permanent 7th defender. Reg just needs a bit more time and confidence. He showed last year with a bit of space and decent delivery he has got it. His should have held on to a couple but is a big step up from ACTFL and Swans forwardline plan was probably disrupted by Hall inj. Also he has played very little footy in pre season

Schmidt
He looks bit more apprehensive and overwhelmed, takes too long to pick and option and a few stuff ups was likely nerves. Does look slow will need to show some flair next chance he gets.

I reckon Roosey will rotate the newbies (try and get game time into them early in the season) so no certainty for either next week but if Hall misses you would reckon Grundy or Vogels will have another chance.

Geez we're harsh markers in here.

I thought Schmidt had a solid game. I'm not suggesting he blew anyone's socks off but he had a few nice clearances, some nice inside 50s (albeit intermixed with a few shockers) and kicked a goal under pressure. He will fit in very well with our midfield.

Grundy just looked off the pace, not surprising since he missed the pre-season. There were a few chances he would have taken in his sleep that he dropped. Grundy's strengths do not lie with his strength but in his ability to outbody and outmuscle his opponent. He will be the forward playing out of the goalsquare when MOL retires.

Ninthmond lol... it's funny because its true

Was Grundy number 39?

Yes.

I thought Schmidt was impressive. Had about 10 touches and kicked a vital goal in the final quarter. Good foot skills as well.

Grundy did look off the pace, but that's to be expected. Once he's played a few more games his pace and confidence will return. And it's always tough when the opposition side floods as much as the tiges did today.

So how was it different from the bagging of the players player you gave it to last week

Oh wo won I guess

I went today and there was one passage of play that i remember. Three Richmond players were handballing it around the wing and playing keepings off Schmidt. He could have easily tackled one of them but was too scared to leave his direct opponent so eventually Richmond got it onto the forward line. I guess it comes with experience but that was still disappointing for me (I was going for Sydney)

You don;t have to be the quickest in the league to be a dominant player. Schmidt will be in this category, i think you'll find he will be the main part of the Bloods midfield in the coming years. Has the footy smarts and will be a major ball winner after the Kirks etc have finished up.

Grundy has a lot of improvement to make. Had a solid debut, but has played a few stinkers since. I am undecided on him.

Schmidt was decent, I thought. His lack of pace isn't a huge issue for him as an individual, especially if he can generate clearances. However, for the Swans midfield as a whole its a bit of an issue having Kirk, Bolton, Mathews and Schmidt all there at the same time. I don't think Richmond's onball brigade is the quickest going around but they certainly made ours look slow today. Ablett and Buchanan are quicker than the four listed above but still no greyhounds. For the sake of balance, we need to find one or two for the future with some genuine pace through the middle just to mix things up a bit.

In the short term, having Crouch in there will make a difference, if he can get fit. Longer term, Schneider might yet carve out more of a role through the middle in the future. Phillips has pace but still needs to get bulk. Moore is probably quicker than Kirk et al but still not lightening.

Maybe the likes of Simpkin or DOK might provide some of the answer down the line, but it does look to be one area for the recruiters to look at in the near future.

As for Grundy! I expressed my doubts about his selection when the "Scoop" was posted. With the benefit of hindsight, I stick to them.

Completely bizarre selection in my opinion, to throw a player with a mere handful of career games into the senior team with absolutely NO warm-up games. They made Schneider play at least one game in the twos before regaining his spot - and his injury period was less than Grundy's. Can't see how it can possibly help Grundy's confidence to be thrown into the fray like that without a game or two at a slower pace to get himself warmed up.

Far too early to tell whether Reg is going to be a long term quality forward but I reckon we'd do well to completely disregard his game today in terms of giving any sort of indication. Just not fair on him to throw him in like that. Unfortunately, Hall's injury means he'll probably get another game next week, when he'd be better off getting his touch and confidence back in Canberra for a week or two, and then be given a chance to show how he's come along during the pre-season.

Well sounds to me you would have like that he only got 1 but looking it up had 4

So I guess you just luv to find fault or get of on seeing some players player fail then :o

Whatever. But Schmidt was undoubtedly better yesterday than flipper was last week.

This is what you wrote on page 7

Well to be fair he did set up one of our first quarter goals, and spent a lot of time on the bench.

Wouldnt the young lad you mention have your same thoughts then
And against a far better opponent

Gotta love the hypocrisy.

Well a opinion as what I wrote not a direct attack on a young footballer

And now you try and find fault with what I write

Oh well Maybe some form of Jealously

Have a nice easter:thumbsu:

Thought Schmidt did what the coaches would have asked him to do. He worked hard under the packs, tackled well and smashed a couple forward under pressure. On the whole his skills were ok. There was the odd duffer. But he was the one who hit Hall on the chest lace out in that marvelous goal of the day when we went end to end.

Harder to mark Reg. He did take a good mark in the third (but then did that hospital pass to Leo that ended in a headclash. Leo might have had a word or two about that after the game :p ). The strength in his hands was one of the things that impressed me last year. As was his confidence in front of goal when he was within his range. Some of the negativity in the tactics ensured it wasn't really a day for Fulll Forwards, though.

I notice Grundy appeared on the injury list with a back injury, too. Don't think that would have helped his game on the weekend much either.
