i think he has more potential than Howe (Howe strikes me as very good VFL player and nothing more) but its time for him to start showing it.
he needs to get involved more and have more composure when he does. sure he can run fast and kick long but those are meaningless attributes if you cant use them properly

It's a weird one. I think Litherland is a better defender than Howe purely due to a few years of experience but I know who I want with ball in hand 5 minutes to go in a final.

And it's not Mr. Walk over the boundary line under zero pressure.
I just watched the replay of that & he should have let it bounce out.
He had absolutely nowhere to go once taking possession with Palpy?? On his heals & Buddy closing in

Just dumb football. Which is why I'm not sold on him.

He plays with heart but he has no brain. Even see it with his disposal. Get ball kick ball type of player.

So if he had of faked a hand pass & walked it over it would be OK?
That would have been smarter football.
Just out of curiosity, how do you compare him to Suckling?

Suckling has more talent in his left toe than Litherland has in the entirety of his body. Wasn't a defenders arseh*le but he made up for it with his offensive ability. Very frustrating player though.

Litherland can defend. That's about it and I'm not sure his one dimensional ability to defend is going to save him.

i Think Howe will be a much better player than Litherland , like his skills and composure

Wow just wow!

Do you know the line following, 'Teamwork is the thing that talks'?

Lithers did some good things on Thursday nights game. His over the line mistake I think could have been avoided by him stepping back inside the line & allow the impending tackle/s to take him over instead.
He will be schooled on what he could have done differently.

He actually had Fawley inside if he wanted to handball. I lost my scnikt at him over that incident, lucky it didn't cost us.

Contrast that to him breaking a couple of tackles in the centre and leaving 3 Swans players in his wake and sporting up Gunston (I think). Such potential yet not quite there.

I can't fault his effort but rookie errors against top 4 sides are going to kill you.

The thing that worries me is he has been in the system a long time but still does some ridiculously stupid things. His spoil directly into the corridor was absolutely cringeworthy. Every defender worth their salt knows you never spoil into the corridor.

I really want to see him succeed with us but for the life of me I just don't see it. I think Howe has way more potential as a player and is already a better overall player. This coupled with the fact that he has 3 years less development.

I'll still back him in as he's one of us but I'm not sold.

Lithers great strength is his ability to provide defensive coverage at great speed.

Very noticable was his ability to shut down space and cover players.

Just needs another string.
Transition that speed to run & carry off half back & through the middle.... That's where I see the biggest weapon he has come into play. Trouble is there are a couple of OK players already playing there....

Just not sure if it hasn't been found six years in it will be...

Forget his height: he needs to play a defensive role on dangerous small forwards. I think he remains in the plans for finals

Are you talking about Howe or Gus re runs fast and kicks long?

Yep.

The Crows out the back crap.

Also freed up Brichall to run and create more than any other game this year I thought. Not to mention the flow on effect of Silk being freed up from being the link player in defense.

To many isolate one player they haven't taken a shine to and forget the flow on effect they have for the team.

Yet they can see it easily when it comes Brand for example, because of structure, and he is a tall, so he doesn't need do much because it helps our structure, unlike Litherland who got picked for who knows what - maybe it was so Silk could play middle and win the game with Brichall back to being the link - but that bow is harder to draw and sight down then the drawn bow of 'Brand helps our structure because he frees up Gibbo for 3rd man up bla bla... '

Excellet post.

Dont want to pump myself up but.....

I will anyway.

Mentioned pre game that lithers and whitecross would free up burger and hodge for more midfield/ clearance work.

Both hard workers, shutting down while others could be more offensive.

How often they're needed only clako and time will tell.

Was recruited in the same draft as Smith and Puopolo (2010). Has played 25 senior games compared to 127 from both Smith and Poppy. Both of them have snagged 3 flags each also. Wouldn't blame him if he went looking elsewhere for opportunities.

I agree completely.
He landed at a team that was loaded with defensive talent & would be looking seriously at more oppertunities elsewhere.... I would.
Looking at the interviews from the start of the year it looks like Gus had already made up his mind on 'this is his year to cement himself' or other avenues will be sought to play senior footy.
I still think that if we have any retirements in defence he is next in line.

When Pops was drafted he was just about to turn 23 had already spent 4 years in the SANFL. He was fully physically mature and mentally ready to give AFL a go when he arrived at the club. Smith was 22 when he started playing for the Hawks having spent three years working up from the local leagues to the VFL.

Gus was drafted as an 18yo and spent his first years at eth Hawks trying to overcome various injuries and it was two or three (can't remember which) years before he was able to do a full per-season.

The comparison between the post drafting careers of these three players is hardly a valid one. Litherland's progress should be measuired against other 18 yo draftees form around his era like Hill, O'Brien, Woody or Hallahan.

Woody has done 3 knees so is a bad comparison. OBrien is a KPP who was expected to do 2-3 seasons in the VFL before cracking the team. Some would argue that even he is behind schedule. Hill who was drafted a season after Litherland and has played 87 of a possible 115 games. Hallahan who was in the same draft is a good comparison as he, like Litherland, struggled to crack the team and took off to greener pastures after 6 games in 4 seasons at the club. Litherland had played 14 after 4 seasons and has now played 26 after 6 seasons.
