The thing I find about the guys is that they are so down to earth, they take time out to talk to people and at their gigs they aren't standing 10 feet away and to scared to come close to the edge and get near their fans, hell dan gets right up to the crowd, I reckon if he had it his way he might play in the crowd.

he did have it his way this one time.
back at the hifi bar in 06. july 20th, two days after i had turned 18 i attended my first 18+ gig, being a gyro one i was in my element.
right at the front and dead infront of dan.
i saw him disapear off the stage so i just continued watching the other boys and i turn around to see dan standing next to me rocking out on his guitar.
to say i almost passed out and cried would be an understatement. it was just pure excitement! he gave me his guitar pick too, even nicer of him.
so yep he made it in the crowd that day lol.

i like that there are so many different opinions on here its awesome
atleast this many of us have given the album a crack so far
when i first listened on their myspace almost a month ago i thought it was good but i wasn't straight away oh wow that is amazing work.
now i feel completely different though
its so good i cant even describe!
but
i wish people would not just listen to something once and be so quick to judge
its obvious thats what the herald sun shit reviewer did.
its the same with any album though i guess. reviewers are tossers.

While I'm not quite as critical of the album as Ize is, I'm certainly not as impressed with it as anyone else in the thread.

It's just missing something, and it's a pretty definitive something, because AYI? had it and then some, it's certainly one of the better Aussie albums to come out in recent years. But BO just doesn't grab me in the same way that AYI? did. To be honest, I'm kind of agreeing with the HUN review...I was expecting something sensational, from this Aussie band which has promised so much...and they didn't deliver.

Perhaps it's just a time thing. Probably needs a few more listens. But I felt the same way about Young Modern last year, and time didn't improve that.

Without a doubt Breed Obsession is not as strong as SSS or AYI but that doesn't stop it being a good album. The problem is that they have set the bar so high with their first 2 albums that another which would be very good to any other band would be deemed a failure to them. Unfortunately the Herald Sun reviewer got so wrapped up in that fact they were blinded to the actual quality of the album. To suggest 1981 even sounds like Muse is bordering ridiculous and it's simply ignorant to imply the "light and shade" moments are stolen, new and don't date back to I've Been Struck By Lightning......off their Take Time EP. It's obviously a review based on ignorance and a biased attitude

Having said that. It is more of a "grower" album. One which I thought sounded bloody ordinary the first few listens but have come to appreciate much more with repeat listens.

Ultimately Gyroscope are known for their live shows and even the most poxy songs translate incredibly. A mate of mine despised Snakeskin until he saw them play it live where it just went off.

Whilst I haven't read the review yet, I hear Blunt has given the album 9 out of 10 and popular music website Bombshellzine.com gave it 5 out of 5

perhaps a little high but there's a few reviews from more reputable sources then the Herald Sun

Beware Wolf is a simply amazing song but nothing else ever stood up to it on Are You Involved except maybe Sexxxy. Sound Shattering sound was alot more consistant but hasnt had me rush out for this.

SOunds like I should give them another go.

good album, personally i liked their local stuff better, but they're still a lot better then lots of the australian 'rock' bands going around today.

Quiet achievers. Been a excellent band for many years now, ever since i heard safe forever 5 years ago i have been hooked! New album is what i expected from the boys. Awesome stuff!

Also judging an album by one song is a real good way to rate an album
Well yeah actually, it is. If I'm not taken by the single I'm not gonna go out and buy the album. That is the whole concept of what a single is.

I think that there are Gyro fans who love their punk, hated Beware Wolf and felt Snakeskin was a return to form. Then there were those of us who weren't that into their early stuff, thought Beware Wolf was great, but were disappointed with Snakeskin. Just comes down to taste fundamentally.

Just because you were dissapointed with one song is no reason not to buy an album or at least give it a chance. I like it when Gyro do their punk stuff I like it when they do their softer stuff give the album a chance before you bag it and don't judge it off one song.

Ironically, there are only a couple of songs on Breed Obsession that could be described as punk. But who cares about that when you can continue expressing ignorant opinions!

For the record, I wouldn't describe them or the majority of their work as punk

Ok, at no stage have I said that Greed Obsession is a bad album, or criticised it in any way. All I said was that i was disappointed by their lead single and therefore would not be buying the album. Why on earth would I?

For the record, I've seen Gyroscope live twice and enjoyed both gigs. I'm just not that into them, outside some of Are You Involved?

Geez, you really must miss out on a lot of music if that's how you gauge your choices.

Hang on... so you hear a song on the radio that you dislike and doesn't appeal to you in any way, and you think "the album's probably alright, I better check it out" ????? You must end up with some really crap music if that's how you gauge your choices.

I don't listen to singles; I listen to albums. In the same way that, if I'm going to judge a movie, I watch the whole thing, rather than a five minute segment of it. Most singles released are the most simplstic, catchy song on an album, and are rarely an accurate representation of the rest of band's music.

Yeah, I agree. You're just gonna have to accept that I'm not interested in Greed Obsession, I prefer their AYI? work.

Here's a review i read on BO from the Herald Sun Thursday, March 13 in the Hit liftout

Gyroscope: Breed Obsession (Warner)

Once incredibly promising, Perth's Gyroscope have now seemes to have settled into the meat and potato-ness of their four-man rock line-up.
When not painting in simple Foo Fighters tones of soft then loud,Breed Obession resides in a dirgery rut. Or, on the poncey Australia - enough to give our country a bad name - a plain old dodgy rut. It's not the only embarrassing moment (see 1981 their attempt to be Muse).
Hindered by cringeworthy lyicrs and flat vocals, Breed never escapes its tough-slog vibe, as hard as the sly swing of Polyphons and Multidoors might try to beak up the mix. A lot of dull work for little reward.
The Verdict: 2 stars
In a word: wrong
Other releases: Sound Shattering Sound

Neala Johnson

Now I don't know about you but when I read that I immediately thought that the reviewer knew next to nothing about Gyro, it's simple in nearly all of their songs it is quite then it becomes loud when the chorus hits I fail to understand how that makes them the same as the Foo Fighters, also imo 1981 sounds nothing like a Muse song at all so I don't know why that comparison was made, all in all that review made me want to buy the album all the more just because I knew it would be the complete opposite.

This woman should not be a music reviewer.

Exactly right.

At the same time, you can't use that extent to everything. You don't hear the top 40 and say "Gimme More is shit, but Im gonna listen to the whole Britney album before I judge" otherwise you'd listen to the entire top 40. And although that might be more of a statement towards Britney than her singles, the same goes for countless new random bands like Hinder, you hear that single and know not to go for the album.

Same with trailers, sometimes you can see a trailer and just KNOW the movie is going to be bad.

So yeah, you can't judge a book/album/movie by its cover/single/trailer, but at the same time you sometimes can

I agree...having said that, if you were to give something a chance I reckon a band who's first 2 albums were almost universally reviewed brilliant and their 3rd reviewed brilliant in music circles, would be worthwhile...

I agree with you in the case of Gyroscope. If its a decent band, it gets good reviews or perhaps most importantly you have liked the band in the past then you should definately give it a chance
