Has Aaron Davey revolutionized another position?

Is the same thing happening with half-back?

He's a little different than most of his new position, and I think we might see other coaches looking for their own spritely little indigenous player to run off the half-back flank. Players with speed who can get to a lot of contests, tackling skills, fair/average courage, tackling skills, good kicking efficiency, tackling skills.

Definitely not the first to do this. Mcleod "revolutionised" it I think. However players like Long also did this.

Dempsey has been doing it every match he's played too.

dale kickett was tried at 4 clubs as a half forward before freo put him in the HBF where he played some oustanding football.

while wirrapanda has played in the forward and half forward line, his dash of the half back flank and back pocket has been outstanding.

and its not just indiginous players.

Aussie jones was a small rebounding half back flanker who was twice all australian. north Melbourne have had a fair few smalls runners off the hbf.

Many midfielders or half forward who are tagged out of through means fair or foul often find more space off the half back flank where they can use their speed to burn off slower negating players.

nothing new.

No I mean putting defensive pressure forwards in defence.

McLeod is very good, but doesn't have the closing speed of Rioli, Davey, etc.

Wirrpanda is probably the best other example I can think of.

With all our ruckmen going down except PJ, he's certainly a chance for the 2nd ruck option.

Not exactly ripping sides apart though, is he?

I'd rather concede him 30 touches at half back - the majority of which going sideways or short - than see him have 15 forward of centre.

Unless he plays on a good footballer at half back, it's a pretty cheap role IMO.

No such thing as a 1 man team, even Carey needed someone to kick the football to him, and all things being equal id rather have Aaron Davey then the bloke you overlooked him for... how is Shane Harvey going anyway??

Whilst the 'metres gained' stat is highly useless, the fact that Davey always features in the top 5 from the game ruins your argument NorthBhoy.

Davey seems to be the running go to guy out of defence. We always look from him because we know he will hit the target further up the field. His defensive pressure is great, decision making is basically flawless.

If he keeps it up he will win our B+F by a record margin and definately make AA.

That's another tick for Rioli being better than Ablett at the same age.

Yeah, and he gets it to them fine... problem is they then turn it over, doubt even GAJ can kick the football for his teammates

He's had 14 inside 50's all year. With his gifts, I reckon every opposing coach would be wrapt with that. In the end, if he isn't playing on anyone and getting most of his footy in the back half. Bit of a waste IMO.

He has been a revelation this year.

He is the anti-Bowden/Carrazo of the half-back line. Every posession he gets moves the ball forward and sets up a free player for another move.

Plays midfield more than half back. Often starts in the centre square and roams pretty much wherever he likes.

I disagree he doesn't hurt the opposition though. I'd like to see him get a bit more forward of centre but this is the first season he's played exclusively in the midfield.

He also never wastes the ball, which is pretty handy, especially in an average team.

I actually agree with you, I'd prefer his disposals further up the groudn where he can do more damage. Unfortunately Grimes, who has been groomed for this role, has been injured and had a delayed start. Once he and Strauss break into the team Davey will be released further up the ground - hopefully.
