True this - I think Sicily was a bit generous through. The Pear has been a nothing club for 20 years, and in that time the Horfs have won what 4 flags?

That said it’s rich of the Sicilian who will probably end up as the other 200 game Hawk not to win a flag at this rate

I say this genuinely, as an NESB immigrant boy in Sydney discovering 'aussie rules', I thought Geelong was the 'whitest' of all teams in the 80/90s. But Collingwood was the 'nastiest', like racist bogans you saw on train stations.

Ironically I followed the Hawks. Dunstall, Dipper and co seemed 'good' heroes and they were. It would be decades later on Bigfooty Sociology where I learned about alleged and proven racial issues in the club.

That's probably a fair appraisal of Geelong.

Its migrant population are (or were) predominantly post-war European inserted into an overwhelmingly anglo community. Being a regional.city, it didn't (to my mind anyway) have any sizeable indigenous community and didn't have the same migration numbers as Melbourne.

The footy club likely reflected that at the time (mostly anglo with some continental European), with obvious exceptions like Polly Farmer and the like.

Under.the zoning system,.Geelong had access to the Geelong league and a country footy league, which likely.exacerbates their "whiteness" a bit.

Things changed as the national draft came in.

I can only remember a handful of non-Anglo players: Tony Polinelli in the 60s and 70s, Spiro Malakellis in the 80s,.Riccardi and Grgic in the 90s. Rocking Ronnie Burns in the 90s too.

I'm sure there are others.

But yeah since the mid-90s it's become a lot more diverse - which is great for the community and great for the club
