Autopsy Hawthorn v West Coast Eagles

Brand and hardwick have that special ingredient that you can't teach - and that's a compete lack of fear on the big stage. They don't go into their shell and limit themselves to 10m sideways kicks to senior players - their first thought is the same as it is in the seconds - to look for aggressive, creative options.

Sure they make mistakes but they make the right mistakes. Both of these guys are great finds.

Great to have a win looked a different side but playing an interstate team in a twilite on a Sunday arvo odds are always in your favour can't get too carried away that's for sure but a wins a win and love the way that we can start slotting in keepers for our squad going forward (5-10years) already ticks beside Jom ,Mitchell and Burton looking like you could add TOB and Brand to that list . Really want to see different names among the best players each week .

Hardwick reminds me of one Ian Bremner, safe, tough and assured.
Hardwick probably has better skills, but I know what you mean, he gives a solid feel. I think we have found the nucleus of our future backline with Brand, Burton & Hardwick. Hope they keep getting a gig together.

Reminds me a bit of 08. Plenty of games where sides had a lot of trouble moving the ball through "Clarko's Cluster" but when they could get into their forward 50 it was usually a goal.

Reminds me more like 2012 where the Hawks would push and struggle for 5 minutes to get the ball forward and the opposition would score quickly and easy on the counter attack.

Was great to see Punk go well back there. He has all the tools but has never really made an impact in rotations up the ground before.

HAWTHORN

Kaiden BRAND – 6

Made some timely spoils and helped keep the Eagles at bay for much of the night.

Luke BREUST – 7

Two first-term goals and spent time in centre square. Ended with three majors and was back to some better form.

Shaun BURGOYNE – 7

Started forward and got a lot of ball then went behind the ball at stages too when required. Influential throughout.

Ryan BURTON – 6

Handy enough across half back. Slowly growing into the role at the top level.

James FRAWLEY – 7

Kennedy looked dangerous every time it went forward but he held him to one goal. He’d take that every day of the week!

Josh GIBSON – 6

Better than he has been so far this season, but still not as his best. Played his part however.

Jack GUNSTON – 7

First term goal and looked more comfortable playing in attack than on a wing where he’s spent most of the year so far.

Blake HARDWICK – 6

Off half back and looked assured. Attacked the ball well and picked right times to get involved in transition.

Billy HARTUNG – 6

Too cute at times with disposal and decisions, but won his fair share of ball to play a role.

Luke HODGE – 6

Couple of bad turnovers early but made up for them over the remaining quarters. Leadership was evident.

Dan HOWE – 4

Fumbly at times, but grew into the game and was a handy contributor.

Will LANGFORD – 6

Blue-collar worker in midfield and set the tone with tackling and endeavour. Kicking still scrappy, but effort was there.

Ben MCEVOY – 8

Sensational in third term and ran the game out well opposed to Vardy. Marking was back to its best.

Tom MITCHELL – 8

Ball magnet but most of work done by hand in close. Doesn’t hurt opposition as much as he could, but good effort.

Tim O'BRIEN – 7

Confidence-boosting mark and tackle early. Competed hard all day and ended with a well-earned three goals.

Paul PUOPOLO – 6

Kicked a goal and applied good pressure in the front half that contributed to West Coast’s disposal errors.

Cyril RIOLI – 7

Started in centre square and gave amazing value for his possessions. Not back to his absolute best, but not far off.

Jarryd ROUGHEAD – 6

Booted three goals in first win as skipper and grew in confidence as the game wore on.

Liam SHIELS – 7

Solid effort in midfield. Did well defensively, but then got involved going forward. 26 touches and a goal.

James SICILY – 6

Lively start at half forward and gave Hawks some real energy in the contests. Corked thigh in third term but seemed okay.

Isaac SMITH – 7

Influential with his ground coverage in second term then hurt knee. Came back after half time and continued to give drive.

Ben STRATTON – 4

Gave Darling a bit too much space at times and the Eagle forward made the most of it with four goals.

WEST COAST

Tom BARRASS – 6

Took some good intercept marks and battled hard in defence. Far from the worst of the Eagles line-up.

Sam BUTLER – 4

Mixed and matched on a few different Hawthorn smalls and had a handful with each one.

Jamie CRIPPS – 6

One of the better performers in the front half. Had a hand in a few goals and tackles hard. Injured ankle in final term.

Jack DARLING – 7

Early goal gave him some confidence and proved a problem Stratton. His best outing at the MCG in a while.

Liam DUGGAN – 4

Good start but then totally disappeared. Like the bloke at a party who slips out the side door without saying goodbye!

Andrew GAFF – 6

Racked up the touches on a wing but didn’t threaten to split the Hawks defence apart as we know he can do.

Josh HILL – 3

Two goals, but little to no impact otherwise. Has to find a way to get more of the ball on the road.

Shannon HURN – 5

Laid a few solid (fair) bumps and drove the ball long, but wasn’t able to get much rebound going off half back.

Josh KENNEDY – 4

Radar was off again at the MCG. Looked dangerous, but in the end, only got the one goal, and team was pantsed.

Mark LECRAS – 4

Floated up from forward 50 and was handy early. Then must have done a smokey with Duggan.

Chris MASTEN – 5

Off the pace early in the midfield. Either fumbled or made more decisions/executions. Better late but game was shot.

Jeremy MCGOVERN – 5

Started forward again then went into ruck. Took some nice marks, but wasn’t really a factor. Slight knee tweak in final term?

Jackson NELSON – 4

Had the job on Breust and gave him a bit too much room to move. Like many teammates, made a few blues.

Matt PRIDDIS – 6

Precision handballing caught the eye in early exchanges, but couldn’t cover the ground as well as Hawks opponents.

Jack REDDEN – 5

Made a few poor decisions that halted momentum early on. 17 touches and a goal…where is he at?

Will SCHOFIELD – 3

No impact in defence. A trip back to East Perth a real possibility.

Dom SHEED – 5

Late inclusion for Giles and won a bit of the ball, but hasn’t come on after excellent debut season as one would hope.

Brad SHEPPARD – 4

Started on Sicily and tried to provide aerial support. Just 11 touches, so gave little rebound, but ended with a knee issue.

Luke SHUEY – 8

Didn’t always hit the target but had 33 touches and kicked two goals. Showed his teammates how to play anywhere, anytime.

Nathan VARDY – 4

Shouldered most of the ruck duties with Giles a late out. Okay in early exchanges, but McEvoy eventually got well on top.

Sharrod WELLINGHAM – 4

Meh! Did a few okay things, but was in and out far too much for a player of his quality.

Elliot YEO – 4

Took Gunston at times and wasn’t able to free himself up to control the game in defence. Make him accountable and he struggles.

:hearteyes:Really pleased with HeartTOB.
Think he is a great mark and a decent kick. I worry he is a really slow runner and lacks Im the physical contact.
But love seeing those cheekbones in action so whatever
Love you tim! :kissingheart::kissingheart:

Your eye candy is keeping my eye candy out of the team - not happy Jan :straining: ;)

Seriously though TOB played really well, I hope he keeps it up. I was critical of him only because over the four years I've been watching him at Box Hill he hasn't seemed to develop as much as I thought he would/should. But these things go in spurts so he may have made the leap to the next level. Let's hope so, can never have too many good KPPs!

FMD West Coast should've known you'd bottle it on us

liked for the wire reference

Every time West Coast kicked a couple straight goals and looked like they might pile on a big run of unanswered goals we stood up and smacked them down. Just as we did to all teams over the last few years. Great to see we're still capable of that. Hopefully we can see it more often.

I initially didn't get your love for TOB in terms of looks but watching the replay as a straight man I concede he is much better looking than I originally thought.

My housemate was confused and wondering why I was commenting on how he is actually quite a good-looking dude haha.

Hartung has played 48 games....yet how many of those games were as the Sub?

I'd be guessing at least half, where he played just over a quarter of senior football a week.

I still think he could become a very good little player, and the signs yesterday were promising.

I have basically been avoiding all AFL stuff so can someone tell me why Sam Mitchell didn't play?
ankle, said he couldn't even run at half pace so if he forced it (which he contemplated) he would miss many more weeks after.

I thought the same. When the opposition get out they really get out and its an over the back walk it in goal, but they often pay the price trying to get through. The cluster set up was effective with a young side before, perhaps it is seen as a good teaching tool and foundation for learning and implementing 18 man systems. 9 years is a long time in football, whats old is new again perhaps.
