I was unable to catch any of Hawthorns NAB Cup games & haven't read anywhere near as much on our new recruits this year as i have in previous years. Even today while listening to SEN i heard a Hawthorn player by the name of Tom Schneider mentioned with high praise, and embarassingly know nothing about the kid!

Anyone here able to give me a run-down on the new arrivals at Hawthorn; if and where they're likely to lineup in 2011, and who might be playing for their spot at Hawthorn with these fresh new guys coming in to challenge them??

I apologise in advance if this has already been covered in another thread..

Schneider abit of a smokey can play as a mid/4ward can get the ball and kick a goal..Puopolo a quick pacey hardnosed defender just what we need replacement for brown/guerra..Hale ruckman/4ward versatile pickup to take pressure off rough, and franklin and to give renouf a hand in the ruck..Bruce can go back mid or 4ward agood get gives us more depth..Smith a pacey wingman who loves a goal once again adds to our depth of outside mids has great pace..they are the main ones who we shall see this year! Schneiders probably competing with breust for the small 4ward role..:eek:

Not sure why people always suggest Puopolo is a replacement for Brown. Since mid-to-late 2008, Brown spent most of his footy in the forward line.

I'd suggest:

Bruce will put pressure on Ellis, Shiels, Ladson, Murphy and even Changa and Sewell.

Hale will put pressure on Renouf, Bailey and Lisle.

Puopolo will put pressure on Murphy, Guerra, Ladson and Ellis.

Cheney is a back-up for mine, but would be competing with Murphy, Guerra, Ladson, Ellis and Puopolo.

Savage and Smith probably won't be competiting with Young or maybe even Changa as they are a fair bit ahead IMHO, although they will be putting pressure on our interchange players (of which Changa may be one) for a spot on the bench or as a sub.

Puopolo is basically Campbell Brown with more speed, and the ability to run off half back, not just play a shut down role. Like Brown, Poo can go forward, and kick goals. Poo seems like an upgraded Campbell brown, Campbell Brown 2.0 if you will.

Mate before making statements about a player atleast let him take the field in an actual AFl game. Mad dog played it hard and tough and he always put his body on the line for us. He also has a premiership medallion. As far as i'm concerned he has the score on the board and pops has a long way to go before we can start comparing him to brown let alone saying that he is better than him

what going on with Hallahan? I want to see him out there firing

Think had had an ankle problem or wrist problem over the break but is back training now. Would love to see him, Schneider and Shiels all start in the guts one day during this preseason to see what they are like.

Having now had our second preseason game and seen another couple of recruits in action, what are peoples thoughts (thanks for the reports everyone as I didn't get a chance to see it:thumbsu:)?

Hale - forward/ruck. Doesn't appear to be the answer to our rucking issues, but is assists this area at least a bit. I would suggest he is an upgrade from Taylor, especially up forward. Probably a solution for two to three years while Lowden and Grimely grow up. Probably in our best 22.

Bruce - I have always liked him and seems versatile and classy. Won't add pace to the team, but will be able to fill any number of holes in our team. Probably will end up as part of the midfield rotation (and hopefully will be another cool head to guide the youngsters). Definitely in our best 22.

Cheney - Seems like a player who adds depth to our medium backs. Not an out and out star, but will add pressure to our bottom six. Probably not in our best 22.

Smith - classic outside player. If he is anything like as good as his rep then should be in our 22 as we have been screaming out for QUICK outside players. Should also pose a threat from distance (going on that goal out west), which should open up our forward line. Similar to Young and hopefully in our best 22.

Litherland - hopefully the second coming of Stratton. Will pressure players like Murphy for the stopping role in the back. Initial views seem promising, but likely to be one for future years. Probably not in best 22.

Hallahan - not seen, but likely one for the future.

Puopolo - done well so far and adds pace and dash to our defence. Probably puts pressure on the likes of Murphy and Guerra. Sounds like he could maybe take a runwith role in the mids?? Sounds like he may well be in best 22.

Schneider (rookie) seems to have also done well in mid/small forward role, but hard to see who he would oust from the team.

From previous Breust most likely to fill small forward role at this stage (unless Junior left there all game).

Thoughts??
