I thought that convo where they both asked what they did now after work was sad...Marty eating microwave meals and Rust clearing the rubbish.

FWIW it was a pretty fine effort keeping their story intact about the shoot out for all those years...even when **** and Suck were grilling them all those years later.

Great last episode.

In a way, I'm annoyed in myself for finding that lawnmower man link to imdb and bringing it up here but once I recognized the actor as Remus when he first appeared it was pretty certain.

Or is it? I guess the last ep can throw anything at us. It all depends on what goes down next week but it could be entirely possible nothing gets resolved and McConaughey and Harrelson just take a break, two new detectives next season and then bang, Rust pops up in the last ep of series 2 and we see a collaboration in series 3.

Also, while watching this, just thought that Mark Ruffalo would be perfect for this setting.

I don't care who the murderer/s end up being. I've just loved this ride. No more researching the myriad of theories floating around the internet. No more poring over still shots on Reddit. I'm going to enjoy this last hour ... and only THEN will I go back to working out what the hell has been going on. Also super intrigued by the original literature that is referenced so heavily in this show. I might have to read The King In Yellow. But not before Monday night!

Nah, MM on a talk show was pretty adamant that this season is it for him.

I kind of hope MM does draw a line under it and hands it on to the next actor. I mean whether he dies or walks away I can't see Cohle ever being that fully functioning social person again, he's always reminded me a bit of the detective from A Scanner Darkly and there's just not that much left of him at this point. I thought they did the flashback parts really well, definitely sad, gave the feeling of years gone and that for whatever reasons both guys have burnt a fair chunk of the time given them.

I have always thought they should remake Colombo with Mark Ruffalo.

Some of you are probably aware that Nic Pizolatto is from the South. And he's written about the place extensively.

And that snippets of Lucinda Williams' (she's from the south too) music is also appearing. Most notably when Rust was preparing to go back into the bikies - 'Are you alright' was the track.

Lucinda Williams has a song about Lake Charles, where one of the most recent murders was committed in True Detective. Doing some digging today and i stumbled upon this article which talked about Nic Nic Pizolatto and his roots down south:

His “Ode to Lake Charles,” published in The Oxford American in 2006, led off with a line from Lucinda Williams’s song, “Lake Charles”: “Now your soul is in Lake Charles. No matter what they say.”

He concluded the piece, “A friend asked me what (Lake Charles) was like. I said: Picture a red darkness filled with screaming insects. Imagine a relentless sun, air so moist the breeze leaves a sheen of grease on your skin. Imagine being at the center of a half-closed claw whose nails are trees. My friend said that sounded awful. I told her I hadn’t described it correctly.”

No clues or anything like that. I was just interested in the details, the texture that makes up his story. Love the description of Lake Charles. The whole mood. Seems to sum up the whole feel of True Detective.

Article here.

I have always thought they should remake Colombo with Mark Ruffalo.

Maybe we should have Ruffalo and Norton as the detectives with Eric Bana popping up in episode five under heavy makeup.

Lou Ferrigno could play a henchman.

I think this is the key to the series. It isn't a straight procedural, it isn't some far our metaphysical exploration, nor some musty self conscious rumination on all things genre and TV happy to breathe its own farts, for me this is a story of heroism but from two very average people. Two champions of the ugly or mundane who have had their lives obliterated by circumstance or bad decisions. Not anti-heroes, just two flawed people, who make poor choices, trying to transcend the muck they have created and pay back a debt they believe they owe. Reminds me of some of the hardboiled Japanese crime noir of yesteryear. Duty and obligation, as a road to personal redemption. Not greater redemption because both characters believe they are beyond that, just a defiantly selfless act amongst all the selfish ones.

It's the evrymans heroism and the hardest to achieve, because in their world as in this one, no one really bucks the system.

Also a bit of a complex bromance to, if it didn't exist before it does now.

I can see Marty going down in flames, if it is revealed what happened to his daughter. I don't buy into the in laws being involved at all. I think Rust might come out of it all with some peace.

Im amazed how many people mentioned Ed Norton for S2. Exactly who I pictured.

I see it the other way round.

Rust doesn't have anything to lose and will be willing to go down to break the cycle.

Whoever they cast for season 2, the actors have serious balls to take over from these two. Would be an intimidating prospect trying to keep it up to this standard.

sooooo from the lawnmower scene in the 3rd episode, that sign on the left has an interesting phrase on it.
