About a fortnight ago a bet was made between two friends as to whether another friend would stop listening to a new style of music, while partaking in a specific activity, within a week. The third friend was aware of the bet, but unsure as to which side was which. To make the discussion easier, lets say person A said the friend would be listening to the new music after 7 days, person B said they would stop before 7 days.

First up, the bet was made on a Friday night even though both parties knew the friend in question would not receive the new style of music until Sunday evening. Both parties assumed that the seven days would start from the option that was better for them. Neither clarified this at the start. Would you assume the seven days started from when the bet was made, or from from when the friend received the music? The friend asks at this point to make specific mention that some alcohol may have been consumed by the point the bet was made.

Secondly, on the following Saturday (so either day 7 or 6, depending on where you started counting) the friend listened to the music in question. For the next week, the friend did not partake in the specific activity. Well after the bet should have been decided, the friend received a new CD and officially stated that he would no longer listen to the original music in question and questioned how the bet ended up. The argument about when the bet started was again brought up and also how the bet finished, regardless of the starting date. Because of the ambiguity of that middle week where the activity did not take place, an agreement can not be made. Which person would you guys side with?

First: Despite three paragraphs, I don't have enough information.

Second: Alcohol doesn't preclude a bet nor any particulars therein.

Third: A person should be able to wank any way he wants to, however, I don't recommend the listening to music part. It only adds to the odds you'll be walked in on and then you have to start all over again.

OK, ill try to explain it a little simpler, thats how the other party wrote it to avoid ambiguity and such.

The bet was:

Person A had been talked into trying a new style of music whilst undertaking working out at the gym, and was to receive a mix cd of said genre of music the next time he would see person D

Person B laughed at the notion and made a bet with person C, that person A would not last a week listening to the new genre.

Person C took the bet and an agreement was made, using meals as a form of currency.

Person D supplies person A with the music on the 2 days later.

Pretty much the only thing we need the general public to clarify is "when does the bet start?" Does it start at the point of the hand shake, when the new genre of music is delivered to person A, or the first time that person A undertakes the gym training of which the new genre was obtained for?

The way I'm looking at it, it would start from the first time Person A listens to the new style of music, so at the gym I assume. I'm basing it on this part of the post:

Person B laughed at the notion and made a bet with person C, that person A would not last a week listening to the new genre.

- It can't start at the point of the handshake because Person A hasn't even received the music yet.
- It can't start when Person A receives the music because they haven't actually listened to it yet.

So it has to start when the gym training starts.

FWIW, what music is it?

If the bet was related to when he would stop listening to it, then the seven days starts from when he first listened to it.

Bet doesn't start on the friday handshake, but on the sunday where the music was received

the two days from friday ro sunday are meaningless seeing as the person didn't even have any of the music to even attempt listening to
