It's easy to beat Freo
24 May 2005 Herald Sun

ESSENDON assistant coach Robert Shaw says the past two weeks have shown what it takes to beat Fremantle – hard one-on-one footy.

Shaw said last night the opposition sides needed to execute a simple game plan well to give themselves the best chance of beating the Dockers.

"Our game plan against Fremantle (two weeks ago) was as old-fashioned as the day the person invented the game. You have an opponent and do everything you can to beat that opponent," Shaw said.

"At the moment most people in AFL football would say they would be probably one of the easiest teams to plan against and one of the easiest teams, on their terms, to beat."

Shaw said on SEN radio that Chris Connolly had to evolve his tactics and come up with alternatives.

"I just think they've got a wonderful Plan A - (Paul) Hasleby, (Matthew) Pavlich, Josh Carr, Matthew Carr - but I'm not sure Plan B has come to fruition," he said.

He also thought new Dockers recruit Josh Carr has taken time to adjust to a different playing style.

"Playing for Port Adelaide, Josh Carr has taken on Essendon by himself.

"He's not playing that style of football any more. He's (now) one of the leading uncontested possession players in the competition.

Pretty much on the money imo.

He has told us something we dont know? Quoted 1 stat about Carr.

Sounds a bit like a job application.

Is that the 2006 captain talking?.

Pav is playing his "heart out" this year, worth every dollar.

Since Belly's magazine incident at perth airport last year he been off the pace a bit as captain.

Now if he is as astute and as clever as everyone gives him credit for he should pass the captaincy onto Pav yesterday

Let himself (bell) get on playing footy.

2006 might be too late in some ways. We need some on ground leadership and inspiration now. belly is still an important part of the engine but pav should be given the management system.

I have read on the Freo board under other thread(s) how Connoly has done a huge disservice to this young man by not playing him his rightful place CHF a lot earlier. Possibly 2004? a few extra goals mite have given us that extra win or two to make finals.

Great travesty for FFC but more importantly or the PAV!!

WAFC please note unless you as the owner do something by seasons end this young man will leave within the next year or so. You can bash your head against the wall for so long.

congratulations to journalist Scott Coghlan getting on the 'lets kick freo in the guts bandwagon'

I like this "while Fremantle fans have jammed talkback radio switchboards with their complaints about the team.

The only jamming Ive heard is every other man and dog jamming talk back to give either unsolicted advice or gloating with 'I told you so' yada yada. The odd irate Freo supporter has managed to get through and I congratulate them for telling how they see it.

And This.
"After 10 of 11 years in the bottom eight, and high draft picks throughout that time, we have a weak president, unsuccessful CEO and failing coach that are immune from direct membership criticism," the fan wrote on wehavethepassion.com.

You dont have look very far online to find some one from any team any time who going have whinge when their team loses.

Hopefully tomorrow we will go into positive journalism. Mabey looking at the game on Saturday with some optimism.

I wonder if Belly is not just getting bored with the whole thing.

Football in general that is.

It's not like it's the only string to his bow.

I think you are on the money Exeter, as I have always thought that Bell may hand over the captaincy before it is expected by the supporters. This can be read as that he has his own timetable.

His wife is expecting their first child shortly and his life will change, so the demands on his time will be different. He seems to be a "driven" man so he may be thinking of different challenges. I do remember him saying something to the effect that when he retires he would be going away from football to other challenges.

He should stay on as a player.

He cant carry all the soft overpaid underachieving pricks for ever!

The thing about Belly is his qualifying as a lawyer. He's probably on $500K, and looking forward to joining the legal fraternity and earning $600k and not geting the bejeezus bashed out him every week.
