26 tackles for the enitre game...

6.5 tackles per quarter in an average of say 30 minutes.

Just over 1 tackle for every 5 minutes...

WTF, I ask you????

Must have been the umpires!

Sums up our cruisie attitude. Have you got the stats for the first quarter, tackles must have been 4 to 1 at quarter time.

The thing is, and this is no excuse for this stat, that I've noticed when we do tackle, we're either pinged for in the back or being too high.

I think they're too scared to tackle - Solly got reported for a straightforward tackle today. I know I'm confused, maybe the players are too?

26, wow. Stenglein, Kerr, Priddis and Seaby had 27 between the 4 of them (of our 58).

On one hand, you are missing Troy Cook's hardness in the middle. On the other, your midfield isn't the paciest going around with him out of the side.

Not a great performance, but the sky isn't falling just yet.

That's what happens when you play a soft zonal game plan and man up particular areas of the ground rather than an opposition player.

You won't need a pacy midfield if you get first hands to the ball i.e. from Sandilands.
It was disposal that is costing us, in both games. We cannot afford to cough up to the opposition. If we do this Saturday, we will get smashed.
We need Heath Black back, he sets us up, and the sight of him delivering to Pav & Tazza will be delectable.
It aint over yet, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the club should never have challenged those initial penalties.

23 - 18 according to the AFL site

About 5 of them awarded in the last 5 minutes when it was all over.
70% of Essendon's in their forward 50, most of which could be considered 50/50 chances.

i'm almost certain that tackling discipline is one area that the coaching staff NEEDS to address especially in the defensive 50, that was an area MJ almost single handedly controlled last yr but our defence and tackling need to step up otherwise when the blow torch is applied in Sep we may be found wanting in our overall pressure

Mundy avg 1.8 tackles a game last year more than crowley
and hayden to name a few, team avg last year was 46
cook avgs 4 tackles per game

does anyone have a H/O to Adv stat on him because i cant see freo players getting first hand on the ball.

Go and watch the tape again 34 of his 38 HO's would have gone directly to a team mate who coughed it up.

Add that to his 6 takeaways by himself and it adds up to a dominant game by Him.

Grossly unfair to blame him for others coughing it up.

well said rip. he kept you guys in the game today. he was unbelievable. hopefully hille will learn that he has a long way to go before he can call himself one of the best ruckman in the comp.

I just logged on because I was going to start a thread about the tackle count. But you've already nailed it, Lachy.

You might remember last year, I posed the point that when we win we usually get about 50 tackles. Todays effort was woeful.

At one point, my favourite player of the moment, James Walker watched his player just run away with the ball. One second he was in the contest, and the ball moved about 2m away so he just stood flat footed and watched.

But really, there were so many who dropped off their men, I don't know who to point the finger at.

I saw McManus get hit lace out and just plain fumble to the opposition. And who would ever cross the road with poor old Paul Duffield. That fella just loves turning back into traffic.

We look very disorganised in the middle when we get the ball.

One last stat I want to highlight is the marks 138-117. That could be a hell of a lot of missed targets, or people not working hard enough to space or covering their men.
