McKay bowled absolue puss today, he was very poor, low pace, no movement and no real bounce to speak of and absolutely uninspiring debut. He was very good in the one days. He has a bit of the Simon Davis about him. I can't believe McKay and Geeves are our next best. Surely a young tyro like Cutting, Starc, Hazlewood, Walter, Pattinson or George are worth a run over a pedestrian McKay. Alternatively a Magoffin or Noffke who have done the business for many a season should have been given an opportunity.

While I am on poor selections

Hauritz 107 first class wickets at 45 strike rate of 91

McGain 77 first class wickets at 36 strike rate of 65

The only test McGain played was after a shoulder operation, ask Warney how hard it is to come back from one.

McGain again is the form spinner of the shield competition. He should be in the team because over the last3 seasons not one shield spinner has got anywhere near him.

McGain is old, and is not worth it. If he was 25 you would have a point. In reality there is no spinner screaming "pick me". Any spinner would have got smashed with Gayle in that mood, when he gets going like Gilchrist, he is hard to contain let alone dismiss him! Plus Hauritz would have had him is Clarke the useless playboy could catch!

As for McKay, I am prepared to give him a go, however he does show how much we rely on Hilfenhaus. As for the next best quick, who knows. George might be worth a go, but again none of the options scream "pick me". That is the issue. It is why there are calls for Steve Smith to play and bat in the top 6.

McGain is not the answer so completely forget about him. As bombers said there is no spinners stepping up and making the selectors pick them. Plus Gayle would of smashed anyone today.

As for Mckay. Well I always considered him more of a one day bowler. However I am going to give him longer than half a day with a rampant Gayle before I write him off. However even with the pace bowlers there is not really anyone in state cricket screaming pick me pick me.

I think as Australian fans, we have to give all players time, whether that be Hauritz, Watson, etc. To expect performances from day 1 is unfair. That said, as bowlers you can't be expensive. McKay actually was one of the more economical bowlers out there today. Lets give him a MCG test in his conditions before crucifying him

McKay extracted little movement or bounce. His action is similar to Tonge infact he seems like our Tonge!

McGain isn't the long term answer but he is probably could do the job for the next couple of years and perform well in test match cricket. Hauritz is horrible:eek:

I thought Clint did okay, especially considering he was introduced slap bang in the middle of hurricane Gayle.

Unless the spinner is 37 and went for about 2000 runs in his one and only test so far. In which case you don't bother with him. Harsh, but fair.

As for McKay, what Likka said.

Returning from a shouder op chief, selector rushed his comeback, would have been better not to have declared himself fit for S.Africa, he would have been a shoe in for England. Selectors are all at sea. Hauritz will never bowl us to victory or even really contribute in a tough match. McGain at least bowls leg spin and has had success at domestic level unlike Hauritz.

Any bowler we threw in would have been taken apart by Gayle today. And the so called leader of this pack is easily the most expensive while McKay got his economy back below 4 an over. So the first guy we should be looking at is Johnson.

Gee give the guy a chance.1st Test and would have been nervous.Johnston needs a kick up the arse and tell him to bowl with better length.

Lol.

What a ridiculous OP, Mackay comes in bowls on a road against a bloke in a freak vein of form and the selectors have made a mistake?????

I watched a debutant today get slapped for 6 back over his head bowling at 140km and then beat the bat 3/5 balls.

Thought he was the best of our bowlers and showed a consistency the others lacked.

Thought he was alright - bowled at the stumps a bit too much for my liking; what's wrong wth a good length just outside off?

And until we (the Selectors) get their heads around the fact that a spinner should be a weapon, and not just somebody to rush through overs to give the quicks a break, then Hauritz is doing a decent job.

i always considered him to be the opposite, a red ball bowler as he bowls that nagging length outside off stump most of the time and beats the bat, more likely to be taken apart in a one dayer yet at the same time these days he usually gets the batsman out trying to slog him before too much damage is done

Bowled very well today I thought, couldnt have done much better in those circumstances and was far from the worst bowler out there

You want a leggie so badly short term, pick a youngster, not a guy who is nearly 40! Too old, our side is already too old. McGain is no MacGill with an exceptional test record!

Fair enough. I will admit that I have seen a lot of him. But from what I have seen I though he was a better white ball bowler. Happy to be told otherwise.

McKay was by the far the best of the seamers today.
Not sure he has a long-term Test future, but was the only one who maintained any pressure on the batsmen.

He has become a far better one day bowler recently, but his ability to build up pressure is very effective when not limited by overs
