Hird back to take on Blues

Monday, 13 August 2007
Essendon champion James Hird is expected to make his return to football this Saturday afternoon against Carlton. With the Bombers having slumped to 13th place on the ladder, it is potentially Hird’s third last game in the red and black.

Essendon high performance manager John Quinn put Hird through a searching fitness test this morning and the Bomber veteran came through with flying colors.

“We did a session this morning which included some speed and agility work," Quinn said.

"Matthew Knights did some skill work with him and he didn’t have a problem so we expect him to play this weekend.

“He has missed five matches so we have given him plenty of time to get over it. He will join in full training on Wednesday and have a light run on Friday and be ready to go.”

Jason Johnson – who missed last weekend’s Bendigo Bombers’ match – is expected to resume this weekend as well.

Jason Laycock – who suffered a corked calf against Fremantle – is expected to make a full recovery and play against the Blues.

If we win the next two and are still a chance to make the finals then no.
If not, he should probably retire after the Richmond game but knowing James Hird, their is no chance of that.

Will be quite emotional to see him out there again, knowing every second could be the last we see...

He'll prolly do something outrageous and get B.O.G.

Would people like to see him officially call the Richmond game his last?

You're joking!?

what kind of soft, piss-weak player would quit with 1 game to go and abandon the rest of the team? What would that be saying to his team mates? :thumbsd:

No way, fight to the end, Hirdy is a champ, expect nothing less!:thumbsu:

Knowing Hirdy, he will play the last game in Perth no matter what.

I would love to see his last game, but i'm sure the Fitzroy supporters would have liked to see theirs too. Incidently their last game in Melbourne was against Richmond at the G'. Scary.

Glad he will get the send off's he deserves , Victorians can have a send off in round 21 for him and then we all can sit back for his last game over in Perth watching him flog the Eagles. Think everyone who loves AFL football will be turned into that one and watch a true champion have his last run. It will be a sad day for football.
