Cousins got cut down at 28 in his prime, whilst Hird was constantly cut down by injuries. Both greats of the game, and no doubt two of the top 50 greatest players ever.

Basically impossible to split on individual accolades. Both great.

If I had to pick one at their absolute peak, it would be Ben. He was not only a great footballer, but also an explosive athlete who worked harder on field than anyone I have ever seen play.

Not anymore. And 9 out of the 10 Hird votes are from Essendon people.

They are neck and neck for individual accolades ( AAs, MVPs, B&Fs etc ). There really isn't much between them.

Cousins impacted every game, consistently.

Hird would have games he'd tear apart, then float around a little, doing stuff but not impacting.

I think they are both on the same level. Can't blame anyoen for picking either, and would think anyone saying one is clearly better is full of themselves.

Sadly also two who could have given more, Hird with injuries early on, and Cousins with the missing drug season and a half.

Like comparing Franklin to Cloke. Cloke is a great elite player, but Franklin is just on another level.

Hird should win comfortably imo.

Unfair poll. If Cousins played on the Eastern Seaboard & for an once Big 4 club, it wouldn't be as a stupid comparison.

Cous 05 to 07 was as good as I've seen a midfielder play. Would have been a 7 time AA if he had no offield issues (that wiped out his 07' season).

If you had half a brain, you would realise that it isn't necessary to provide an argument, because simply there ain't any. Live by stats. LOL.

Stat's support arguements, as do AA nominations, MVP noms, Brownlow votes. They all add up to being fairly equal as players.

I know Hird is god incarnate down at bomberland, but some perspective is necessary.

Maybe that's because we all love Hirdy at Windy Hill, where as many WCE supporters were happy to get rid of Cousins once his off-field issues took over. You're the only one to stand up for him so far.

Personally, I think both were fantastic players who could win games on their own. I'd pick Hird for his leadership any day of the week though.

Probably because the other WCE supporters aren't around at the moment.

Cousins was one of the best on field leaders going round. Often would pick the entire WCE team up and carry them, just like Hirdy did for the Bombers.

I voted for cousins because i love him, but can at least admit it's a coin toss, different players, but both all time greats. Essendon fans however are quick to write off someone who had more AA noms, an MVP, and more Brownloww votes per game as nowhere near the same league. Interesting....

Had to actually think about it. Cousins was as close to as good as it gets as a midfielder and amazingly consistent.
Sir James is one of the true greats for mine so gets the nod.

Lol take out say 2 or 3 votes for cousins assuming they are WCE posters, and 8 votes for Hird (being very generous) and it still isn't close.
