This will be updated in the coming weeks, but I'm going to go ahead and map out the changes SOS has implemented in his time with Carlton, just to give some perspective to both our supporters and any opposition fans who feel he's an easy target.

Here's the list SOS took over in 2015:

Andrew Walker |Blaine Boekhorst |Mark Whiley |Levi Casboult
\Troy Menzel |Chris Yarran |Clem Smith |Zach Tuohy
\Marc Murphy(c) |Liam Jones |Jayden Foster |Simon White
\Bryce Gibbs(vc) |Sam Docherty |Dennis Armfield |Andrew Carrazzo
\Chris Judd |Dillon Viojo-Rainbow |Tom Bell |David Ellard
\Kade Simpson |Sam Rowe(lg) |Matthew Dick |Ciarán Sheehan
\Dylan Buckley |Kristian Jaksch |Nicholas Graham |Billy Gowers
\Matthew Kreuzer |Cameron Giles |Andrejs Everitt |Blaine Johnson
\Patrick Cripps |Nick Holman |Ed Curnow |Brad Walsh
\Matthew Watson |Jason Tutt |Dale Thomas |Cameron Wood
\Robert Warnock |Lachlan Henderson(lg) |Michael Jamison (vc) |Tom Fields
\ | | |Ciarán Byrne
\ | | |Fraser Russell

He immediately set about carving up the list. 2015 off-season changes as follows:

OUT|IN
\Judd|Korchek
\Carrazzo|Kerridge
\Ellard|Lamb
\Watson|Phillips
\Giles|Plowman
\Johnson|Sumner
\Russell|Gorringe
\Henderson|Weitering
\Bell|McKay
\Menzel|Curnow
\Yarran|Cuningham
\Warnock|Silvagni
\Holman|Wright
\Walsh|Glass-McCasker
\Fields|Gallucci

Unsatisfied, another 12 players were turned over in 2016:

OUT|IN
\Walker |Smedts
\Jamison |Marchbank
\Wood |Pickett
\Dick |Palmer
\Foster |Petrevski-Seton
\Smith |Fisher
\Tuohy |Macreadie
\Everitt |Polson
\Tutt |Williamson
\Viojo-Rainbow |Kerr
\Whiley |Lebois
\Gowers |Silvagni

Still, it wasn't enough. 2017 saw another 13 players make way:

OUT|IN
\Armfield |Lobbe
\Gorringe |Kennedy
\Korchek |Lang
\Jaksch |Mullett
\Sumner |McDaid
\Gallucci |Dow
\Gibbs |O'Brien
\Buckley |De Koning
\Sheehan |Schumacher
\Palmer |Garlett
\Boekhorst |O'Shea
\Smedts |Shaw
\White |McDaid

And finally we come to 2018. It's not all set in stone as yet, but here's the minimum changes I see, with at least another couple likely to be added.

OUT|IN?
\Mullett |Setterfield
\O'Shea |McGovern
\Byrne |Walsh
\Wright |Fasolo
\Shaw |Silvagni
\Glass-McCasker |Goddard
\Silvagni |???

Where does that leave the list, though?

Jack Silvagni |Tom de Koning |Harrison Macreadie |Dale Thomas
\Paddy Dow |Liam Jones |Matthew Lobbe |Levi Casboult
\Marc Murphy |Sam Docherty (c) |David Cuningham |Will Setterfield
\Lochie O'Brien |Darcy Lang |Cameron Polson | Mitch McGovern
\Sam Petrevski-Seton |Sam Rowe |Charlie Curnow | Sam Walsh
\Kade Simpson (lg) |Angus Schumacher |Tom Williamson | Alex Fasolo
\Matthew Kennedy |Lachie Plowman (lg) |Nicholas Graham | Jed Lamb
\Matthew Kreuzer (lg) |Jarrod Garlett |Jarrod Pickett | Kym LeBois
\Patrick Cripps (c) |Caleb Marchbank |Andrew Phillips | Cillian McDaid
\Harry McKay |Jacob Weitering |Ed Curnow (lg) | Ben Silvagni
\Sam Kerridge |Zac Fisher |Patrick Kerr |Hugh Goddard

Now what I find absolutely remarkable about all this, is how on earth SOS pulled it off given the lack of quality players he had to work with initially.

Of the 47 players that have left the club since SOS took the reins, only 6 (SIX!!!) remain on another AFL list.

Gibbs, Henderson, Tuohy, Holman, Gowers, Buckley.

Three of them are genuine players, the others are rookie pickups at their respective clubs.

Now, it's yet to be seen if SOS has built a list capable of winning a flag (though you'd have to be optimistic with the current group). But you have to tip your hat to him for taking a hack list that was going nowhere and, in the space of four years, completely and utterly transforming it. That is an absolutely herculean effort.

...

Do you feel like you're jumping the shark a little here?

Don't get me wrong, I think SOS has done a terrific job in extremely trying circumstances, but this is rather hyperbolic.

Premise of the OP is pretty spot on for mine, regardless of how much success the (basically) new team has - SOS and co have made use of every tactic they could to "trade up" over four years, including taking salary dumps to get targeted players cheaper, utilising the little currency we had with players to good advantage and then picking draftees that will form the core of the team.

Not everyone will agree, but I think regardless of whether the team SOS puts together wins a flag, I think the rebuild will be 100% successful, because it will form the nucleus of whatever team does challenge for one. Say, for instance, we play final for three years in a row from 2020 but can't quite bring home the chocolates - the players he has selected now will be the currency we use to trade for missing pieces to take that extra step. Once you get your team list in that position, you've rebuild the team successfully from the ground up IMO. Can launch from there.

My way of looking at it is ...

Who’s left?

Cripps
Docherty
Murphy
Simpson
Kreuzer
Ed Curnow
Jones
Rowe
Graham
Thomas
Casboult
Byrne

That’s 12 players left. Fair to say Graham and Byrne are unlikely to continue next year. Simpson, Rowe and Casboult have a year. Kreuzer, Thomas, Murphy and Jones 2 years ...

Who’s still playing?

Gibbs (and 2017 #40 - Kennedy, O’Brien, TDK, McGovern, Pick 42)
Tuohy (and a pick - Marchbank, Pickett)
Henderson (Pick in GWS 4 deal - Plowman, Lamb, Phillips - part of McKay)
Gowers
Buckley (uncontracted)
Holman

We extracted good value for our list from the Gibbs, Tuohy and Henderson trades.

Gowers, Buckley and Holman were not going to make it with us. Buckley uncontracted now, and well done to Gowers and Holman.

Who did we trade and is no longer playing?

Yarran (Pick for Cuningham)
Menzel (Kerridge, Pick in GWS 4 deal - Plowman, Lamb, Phillips - part of McKay)
Bell (combined with another pick got us Charlie Curnow)

We did well to extract good value for our list with these trades. Yarran unfortunately never played again, Menzel was a handful of games for the Crows, Bell has maybe one good year with the Lions then more a depth player for them.

The rest that SOS and Bolts inherited in 2015 ... 24 players ... retired or delisted (not traded for value) and not seen again.

On the right track, more work to do ...

Jones has more than 2 years left. Currently 27 and turning 28 in Feb. Low KMs and the athletic type that lends itself to longevity. I reckon he'll have at least 4 good years left

Next year at full strength

Simpson L.Jones Plowman
Docherty Marchbank Williamson
Lobbe Cripps E.Curnow
Murphy Dow Walsh
McGovern C.Curnow Fisher
SPS McKay Fasolo
O’Brien , Kreuzer , Pickett , Setterfield

From the players inherited Casboult, Thomas would not be in our best team ... just depth going forward

PS reckon Nick Graham will be very very lucky to be on the list !!
