Hocking’s Mess

If AFL players have evolved and become so talented as we are led to believe why do the AFL see the requirement to assist them to do such basic things.

Simple hitting of targets be it short targets or longer targets on any angle we have now decided to give them assistance as apparently the man on the mark moving has been putting them off and make them miss targets.

These elite players were having trouble getting the ball outside their defensive 50 so the AFL have given them a hand and said you can run out 15-20m after a behind to help you.

I really understand in Auskick helping the kiddies out and trying to make it easier for them to move the ball around, but at the elite level it is just comical. The best of the best should have it as hard as possible , if you can’t hit a target with a man on the mark moving around to any angle then how on earth have you made it to AFL level footy. I find this all just simply laughable.

The AFL administration is convinced IT is the solution to ... who knows, BUT they are sure about it.

AFL 2021: Round 1 rules for manning the mark, 50m penalty, league response (news.com.au)

AFL head of football Steve Hocking told The Herald Sun on Monday night the league is still considering changes.

He also claimed the controversial ruling on the Brennan Cox fifty was the correct one from the field umpire.

“If there needs to be a subtle adjustment to it, that’s what we will do over the coming weeks,’’ Hocking said.

The senior administrator said the league is “ very happy” with the rule that has turned defenders into statues when manning the mark.

They are truley in a no win situation and they are the ones that become the scapegoat for it all

Rubbish, they need to stop fiddling .... show some leadership Mr Goyder, the administration are not up to the job.

The game is becoming a laughing stock amongst its most ardent fans.

More 50s per game. Gonna be great viewing
If that was to be the case it would be a massive fail by Steve Hocking.
50 metres are one of the worst parts of the game.
One or two a game when truly warranted when a player out of control is fine but when you get them regularly, no matter what the rules, it would show they truly are not being good custodians of this game they temporarily in charger of overseeing.
This year is make or break for Steve Hocking in his job.
All the heat is on him.

The thing that annoys the crap out of me is that Steven Hocking does not give 2 sh*ts about the people who watch the game, even though he makes the changes supposedly for the fans benefit! He's a delusional c**t that needs to f**k off before more people start walking away. NOT ALL GAMES NEED TO HAVE 20+ GOALS KICKED!!

This is all Auskick stuff mate, bloody hilarious.

Walking away is the solution. AFL crowds need to publicly announce a round 3 boycott if the AFL doesn't back down over this shithouse rule. We can then watch it unfold in the 1st 2 rounds and then hit them in the hip pocket. The only way they will listen.

Players will line up for set shots 50-60m out from goal and a couple of steps into their run up will play on and hope to draw a 50m penalty. Can't wait for the melts, you all know it's coming.
If they * it up, the player with ball, they will have their coach to answer to. Not so sure it going to happen as often as like you imagine it to be. We can only wait and see.

Make no mistake on it this stand the mark rule is a threat on the fabric of our game. we must stand up & not accept it.

Don‘t be fooled thinking the fans care about the sport. They only care about their clubs. If they cared for the sport they would not of accepted 80% of the rule changes on mass the AFL have done the last 20 years.
The AFL could change to a round ball and most would keep attending and following.

Ive said this for years, the AFL can do what they want because people keep going to the game in record numbers year after year.

People power is what is needed to stop AFL doing the s**t they do, but it's never going to happen. Especially after covid and not being able to go to the footy

Hence why the whole shebang is doomed. They can and will twist the game into exactly what they want.
And stomp all over it till brains and blood spew forth in a mountain of power lust from its rotting carcass.

Social media makes it easy to Boycott. If enough people take a stand and they see an actual dip in revenue, they will be forced to act. It has to be a public campaign and done if the predicted outcome is a farce and the AFL do nothing to fix it.

Unfortunately, the AFL is likely to just keep tweaking the rule during the season rather than just scrapping it. Not sure why they aren't testing this in lower leagues first and instead experimenting with the elite tier of the sport.

lol some of the reactions on here to an insignificantly minor rule change

It's the principle. The AFL have been making bullshit changes for years and here they are now telling players not to move. It's kinder garden stuff and time for them to get the message. It's Australia's game, not a few guys in suits more worried about their yearly bonus and junkets.

But history shows people dont boycott the game. Hence they introduce rules without even trialing them anymore. They dont care because they know people will still rock up in droves (hell, do they even care about crowds per se? more money is made from TV rights)

a coordinated 'turn off the TV' protest will be more effective.

hurt Fox/CH7 for a couple of weeks and we will see action immediately.

There have been boycotts, just not in AFL. There's always a first time for everything.

Next we can elect the head of the AFL through club membership voting every 4 years.

How he has a job is baffling bringing a rule in on the eve of the season circus stuff. Also mentioned he changed a rule because of a certain club that's a real dangerous space why he would not communicate with umpires association is baffling. The bloke utter useless.

As if dropping a new rule on the eve on the season wasn't dumb enough, unused subs will now also have a game recorded to their name.

Why does Hocking continue to make decisions that are so bad?

I know some might say it's a minor thing, but the history of our game is hugely important and games played is a huge part of that fabric weave. Imagine someone on 80 games who doesn't get a minute and just unused subs their way to 100 games before being delisted? It's just stupid.

It happened in the past, so the history is actually there to suggest the unused sub should be credited a game. It's also based on match day payments, given they have to be mentally and physically ready to play the game right up until the final siren I 100% agree with that decision.
