Because having more money to spend on useless shit like four wheel drives, a wife you hate, and a cream brick house in Donvale is somehow The Goal?

Actually, "getting paid a lot" means something different to everyone.

To you, it might mean wasting money, especially if you've been supported through school and university by parents. Some people however view "getting paid a lot" as a one way ticket to a life not surrounded by whores, crack and alcoholics. Not raising their kids in a neighbourhood full of violence like they did. To be able to send their kids to a decent school, where teachers give a shit and encourage kids to aim and achieve high.

I have only just moved to a new uni after getting accepted into my dream course. Already I have met half a dozen kids with the above life story, and for them "The Goal" is to break a cycle that has plagued their family for generations.

My point being, don't be such a dick when you don't know what drives people and why, yeah for sure you don't value money but for some people they have seen how important money can be.

On topic:
Concentrating: If you can't concentrate during class/study, try to up your blood flow by stretching, flexing (obviously not getting your biceps out and flexing, just tensing) and keep well hydrated with regular sips of water. Have nutritional food regularly if you are serious about wanting to concentrate, nothing worse than having a tired spell in the middle of class a month from exams and you miss an entire lesson!

Study: If anything gets you distracted very easily, for example with me: North playing, footy in general, facebook, bigfooty. Those 4 things get me distracted from study very easily, so especially when North are playing, I will set everything aside and watch the footy because nothing will get done otherwise. Make sure however you offset this reward with study. And do proper study, not just flicking through notes.

I'm not sure about high school and college, but when I got to uni I found a lot of the subject matter I could find on Youtube lessons. Biology stuff especially. I found myself personally it's a good way of studying because you can repeat it, pause it and take notes, basically control your speed of learning which does help. Don't just sit there and watch the video, you may as well just listen to your teacher again, actively engage in your study.
Also I found the best performing people in my year 12 maths class were the ones who asked the 'dumb' questions about the homework at the start of lessons. Want to know why they asked the 'dumb' questions? Because they were the only ones doing the homework! The 'smartest' guy in the class never asked any questions, because he never did his homework (which was just revision/study). He got A's and B's externally, getting the second highest mark, while all those people who applied themselves and did what the teacher (who had 20 years of experience) suggested got straight A's.
So listen to your teacher, particularly if experienced. Their advice is worth listening to, and so if they suggest doing questions "5, 6 and 9" do 5, 6 and 9 - not just read through 5, skip 6 and do 8 because it requires only a sentence...

This doesn't really help you start studying, but yeah like other people said, set yourself a goal and reward yourself with that goal. Don't however cheat yourself and reward yourself after only getting halfway to a goal, or playing 3 games of FIFA instead of 1. Be self-disciplined. And as you start to get further and further into the year, and you are still not motivated to study and you aren't just a naturally clever person who does not need to cram their brain, maybe reconsider whether year 12 (you're in year 12 right?) is what you want to do. A friend of mine is in his 3rd year of his apprenticeship as a landscaper because he found midway through year 11 he did not enjoy the amount of reading, the unnecessary pressure put on him, and did not find biology/chemistry/history etc interesting. So he gave it a red hot go for the rest of the year, passed his subjects very well and got extremely good principle and teacher references, and used those when applying for the apprenticeship. He got it. Year 11 and 12 aren't the be all end all, and you don't have to go to uni. If you hate reading or want to spend your days 9-5 and nothing more, don't go to uni. Waste of money, time and effort.

I Googled them it's fair to say I still don't understand entirely what they are. Maths was never a strong point of mine. I really didn't give a f*** what x was.

Pi is a surd, as it is an irrational number. So there are no terminating (ending) or repeating decimals.

Terminating decimals can be used in percentages, e.g. football percentages. You score 120 vs 65, your percentage is 184.61538462%. It is terminated.

Repeating decimals is like 10 divided by 3, as in 3.333333 etc etc. 3 is forever repeated (pretty sure this is rational, someone else may correct)

And so if you're still reading (long shot I know) then pi which is 3.14159265 etc etc blahblahblah and keeps on going forever and forever (literally can not be ended) then it is not terminating, and it never repeats.
Therefore it is an irrational number, and a surd.

I haven't found a real life application and never will in my hopeful line of employment, but I'm sure it is of some use to some physicist or chemist.

You also don't want to be that bloke that peaked in high school, Uncle Rico style. A mate of mine is like this, bright, firsts footy (picked ahead of a much maligned former Carlton ruckman) and cricket, but made some bad decisions in life and is now an office bod and fairly frustrated soul.
His life peaked around the turn of the 80's into the 90's.

Why don't they just call them irrational numbers then? That's what we used to call them.
My real understanding of maths disappeared around the time, that pi was introduced into the syllabus.
It is an enormously useful little figure though.

Not sure. Surds are possibly square roots and cube roots (e.g. the square root of 2 is a surd and an irrational number) but while pi is not actually a surd I think (so better correct the original post) it is an irrational number.

But yeah not completely sure. The more I think about it, I don't think pi is 'strictly' a surd but it is definitely an irrational number.

Yep, my understanding of maths is still pretty adequate I would think, but I would be 'middle of the pack' I think for algebra/year 11-12 standard of maths, but used to smash classmates in year 5-6 sort of shit. I miss BODMAS :(

It is useful, just not for everyone

I received a gentleman's pass for matric maths IS, somehow I fooled the examiners into thinking I understood 55% of the course.

WTF are surds?

What are surds?

.

A surd is an irrational number that can be expressed as a root of a rational number and can not be simplified further.

The sqrt of 2 is a surd.

pi is not a surd because it can not be expressed as the root of a rational number.

The irony of realising that I was procrastinating my homework by reading this thread.

To be honest I don't think it's changed.

Wealthy and powerful men have always being able to get attractive women.
i said it more so because of the social media factor, it's so much easier to track down those who are well off or famous nowadays. money talks more than ever

Man, I must be doing life wrong according to the rule book of some in here...

I worked damn hard to get a high TER at a well respected private school so I could get into any course I wanted, which has worked out very well for me. Only one of my subjects was scaled, and I did the big 5.

I have just completed a Chemical Engineering degree, got my honours, and am now doing a postgrad diploma in another subject area to further my qualifications. My preference was to have a grad job straight out of uni, but life doesn't always work out how you planned.

It was certainly hard to get motivated for more study this year, but you simply just have to push through, especially when the end goal is a solid career in the industry you studied for.

I'd love it if I was good enough at sport that I could make a career out of, but I'm not, so you just have to find what inspires you, and work towards that.

We get it, you're rich :D

We get it, you're rich :D
That wasn't the point I was trying to make! I'm just trying to point out that nothing is gifted to you in life, and if you don't have the motivation for anything, you really aren't going to get satisfaction out of much.

Get a job yer bum!
You wouldn't believe how hard I have tried! Just not a good time for the industry, plenty of companies laying off a fair number of people. The Olympic Damn Expansion not going ahead has really made things hard.
