i was searching though youtube pumping myself up for this season coming and i came arross a few videos of houlihan around 2002 and i start to remember why he was my favourite player back then, and this makes me think WHY the hell did he have to bulk up starting in 2003 and lose alot of speed to become the player he is now. i reckon that it would awsome if he played forward line this year because of his awsome skills as shown against carlton vs port, but i think that he would be better to lose some bulk and regain his James Hird like body so he can play how he used to cause face it hes not gunna get much time in the midfield and he is not that good at contested marks, so why to work on speed and become a fast skillful forward

Has there been any indication at training as to where Houlihan might be playing in 2008?

I think we all as Carlton supporters want him up front - that vid was brilliant. Can only hope that the right moves can be made going into next season.

Yes he has been doing forward work drills over the summer

Hoping Houla can return to the forward line and replace the input from Matty Lappin. Makes the recruitment of Browne and Armfield even more important considering we are wasting talented players on stopping roles down back. Release Houla, Release Walker and Welease Wodger ... err, skip that last one.

I think Houlihan's fortunes have more to do with the focus of his mind than the size of his biceps.

Think he still has it. Like the idea of him up forward with great skills (silky) and of course that extra muscle to "don't argue"

We all agree.............

Release Walker....
Release Waite.....
Release Gibbs...
Release Houlihan....

Surely his eight years have produced a more inspiring highlights package, like port this year!
Although i'm not a huge fan, i do think he'll do well as he has in the past as a forward.

I don't think that he has lost that much speed, he probably just looks a little slower now because there is more of him there and because he hasn't really had the opportunity to go on that many runs due to his run with roles..... How much speed do players lose adding a bit of upper body muscle?

Going on training reports and the new inclusions to the club it seems Houlihan will play forward most of the time.Personally I prefer him up front.I believe he can become a 2 goal a game player.Just keep him out of the back line(Its not his fault Pagan played him there)

Sorry quoted wrong article above, you guys know which one I was referring to... I also think he should be played as a forward, as I have said on other occasions :)

I think Houla's 'form slump' has a lot to do with the position change he's undergone since 2002, where he used to play on the Wing/HFF, and delivered the ball with amazing touch to Lappin. As soon as Pagan started to attempt teaching him the defence of the game, alike a lot of other players, he went to crap.

That highlights package just shows what a quick footy brain Houla has.
Yeah, I think he could kick 2-3 goals a game easy, especially with the quality delivery he will get now. He is wasted in defence.

I think Hoops has always been an attacking type of player with a natural excitment to his game. To ask him to be a tagger or big name defender was asking a tiger to change his stripes!

Carlton Board suffers from BiPolar disorder.......
That's a bit sweeping. You have some that are against a player all the time, some that loudly hail a player right up until their delisting and some that will ebb and flow, give criticism or praise where it is due. You won't find too many with an agenda who then turn all hypocritical on us.

If Houlihan was going to have such a greater impact down forward, then why was he moved down back in the first place??? Surely Pagan isn't that stupid.
I think that he's had about the same impact down back as he has had down forward if not more.

Disagree.

Did I mention Posters, no, the board.

One week people are all over nick stevens - no commitment, un interested, would have preferred pies, etc, etc, etc . Next thing you know they cant get enough of him.

Similar stories with:
Fev
Walker
Houlihan (the debates with strawberry?)
etc

There are issues which genuinely divide people (pagan) and there are camp changers (carrazzo) - however there is a tendency for there to be one or two defenders of players like silky, walker, Stevens, who consistently defend while others leave off it as the board gets stuck in.

This thread is not the best example though.... granted.

Don't recall sayin he had lost any speed:rolleyes:

That would have to be, along with his kick, his main asset. He def won't be a marking option, a clearance king, or a run with body type player. So in my book a quick, skillful, attacking HFF or FP are the cards he has left to play!

Disagree.

Ah I see. In that case 99% of threads on any board are evidence of that board being bipolar as there are always going to be some posters that take a contrary stance. The more posters you have the more chance that at least one of them is going to go against the crowd at any given point.
