It is amazing this lul we have had not making finals etc or winning many games is a part of the club now and as much as it hurts but the memories will always be with us.

Im only 18 but i can say the richmond footy club has been a massive part of my life. The day Duncan Kellaway kicked his first goal Vs. Port Adelaide and the whole crowd were chanting his name was sensational and when that was on a DVD i have my spine just starts tingling.

Nick Daffy in his heyday running goals from outside 50 to his disasterous form where he would resort to violence.

Brad Ottens and Richo being the twin towers up forward round 22 vs. Essendon 2001 we beat those pricks was so good sure they smashed us the next week.

Then it has also had such memories as Clay Sampson, Craig Biddiscombe, Ashley Blurton, ...... Edwards (wore 18), Craig Ednie, Lionel Procter, Ben Hollands, Andy Mills, Ben Haynes, Justin Plapp, Jon Howat, Ben Moore, Billy Nicholls, Luke Weller, Shane Morrison, Simon Fletcher, Ben Marsh oh they are painful

Then we have had players like Tim Fleming, Steven Sziller who gave there all.

Ahh those were the days... im only 14 so i know everything from 2000-present. Sziller was good. Some of the names there shows our recruiting though. SHIT. Ednie, Proctor, Mills, Haynes, Nicholls, Weller (picked up LAST in the rookie draft three years in a row by brisbane so they gave him to richmond LOL), morrison, fletcher, marsh, biddiscombe, david bourke, fleming was alright, marty mcgrath... but there were a few good ones. Our left footer brigade of 2001 and the twin towers otto and richo. Leon Cameron, Daffy, Gaspar, Broderick, Gale, Cambo, Knights (LOL Libratore Vs Knights), the kellaways, rogers, bowden... cant we have players like that now!?!?

The answer to how big we would be if successful is easy to find. We would be the second best supported team in the league marginally behind Collingwood. Successful Richmond sides are bigger than everyone but the Pies. Look at the 1966 to 1982 period. Look back to Jack Dyer.

The Big 4 works like this. The top 2 are Collingwood and whoever of the other 3 is consistently successful. EG us in the 1970s or Essendon under Sheedy. At the moment we are the third biggest club in Victoria, easily outdrawing Carlton at home inter state games. it is a myth they have more support. With a couple of years regualr success we would be equal with Essendon and challenging but not displacing Collingwood.

Why do we have to be 2nd to Collingwood I dont see any reason to if we were successful to why we can not go past Collingwood.

I'm basing my analysis on history truetiger. Whilst it is true that a top 4-6 tiges would probably outdraw a poor collingwood as well as everyone else it is also true that a top 4-6 Collingwood would average 60,000 or close to it. Historically they are the biggest club and no use denying it.

However a top 4-6 Richmond has always been top 2 material as history shows.

If you build it they will come

If we win this week the Giant will be getting closer to waking up! if we win the week after and manage to win a few more through out the season The Giant will be wiping the sleep from his eyes!! if we play finals he will be hungry and someone better feed him!!!:thumbsu:

Come on guys the giant is not going to wake up overnight. It's going to take sustained success. The giant might just murmur in its sleep and thats about it. 3/4 biggest crowd total for 2007 is a good platform. All we need is for the football department to deliver! Lets hope Terry made the right choice when he chose us as we are a sleeping giant.

crowds have increased in average over time, so to take our figures from the 70s is not really a fair indication. The Pies averaged 57,000 per game last year. At the moment we are averaging 55,000 and have some big games at the G against the Bombers, Hawks and Cats coming up. We have done nothing for 25 years and have only played 6 finals matches. The pies have played close to 40 finals matches in that time. If we made the finals for the next 3 years in a row and were a premiership chance, you would think we could average 60,000 per game. Don't forget that the Pies get about 18 games at the G, plus games against Essendon, Carlton and Richmond twice. While the Anzac game automatically gets an extra 20,000 just because it's on the holiday and advertised like the grand final. Pies have several reasons to have bigger crowds that us, but not for much longer

Hey bigstyle...we all know that success has to be sustained for the Giant to awake, it seemed like a good thread so i put my 2 cents worth!,though guys like yourself,me and others on this board are suporting the giant whilst he sleeps(memberships, attending games etc) it's the fairweather/winning team supporters that we want to be like us:thumbsu:.

I absolutely agree that the Magpies have a built in advantage and you didn't even mention QB which is worth about 15,000 as well. I also agree with you that a consistently successful Richmond would challenge them but they are big madtiger. Bigger than Essendon or Carlton and probably bigger than a successful Richmond.

Waverley opened in 1970. It would be interesting to compare our attendeances there in 1970-83 compared with theirs and Carltons. That would be a real comparison with all going well in the same stadium.

I think we can overtake them in attendances at some point over the next few years. If you look at the games coming up this year, we will probably be averaging 55,000 still at the half way mark of the season. Great effort for a club who has been sleeping for so long. I think Collingwoods average of 57,000 last year also included finals. The AFL has been missing our success badly

Sleeping Giant!!
That fact is ever increasingly diminishing.
Continued ineptness at senior/management levels at our club is ever present. The player list is reflective of this.
To the many of us that are deluded after a win against a very questionable Fremantle side think again.
March, Wallace, Miller, D.King, McRae and co. please p/o and get the broom out ala Hawthorn a couple of seasons ago.
As each season passes many tiger fans lose interest in a club which continues to show mediocrity.
We need someone with some genuine passion and guts to make the tough calls.
We will definitely win no more than 6 games this season. And 6 is optimistic.

We have one of the most exciting lists in the afl and a quality coach. 10 wins a chance this year

Their average last year was only home and away Madtiger. They broke Essendon's record and would have done in 2006 had they been scheduled as Essendon were in their record year. The current Pies are the best supported team in history.

Yes we can be huge. The AFL does miss us being succcessful because though the Pies and Blues pretend otherwise they hate the thought of the Tigers swaggering about the top 4. Always have. Always will. We have more junior members than anyone else. Imagine it. We have more non ticketeds than the other Big 4. We are on track for 32,000 ticketeds as Spooners !!! A generation of failure and more junior members than anyone!!!

One good year is all it takes. One good year but when will it happen?

We would have broke it by now with just an ounce of success over the last 25 years

We are on track for 32,000

We'll get that next week if we win tomorrow

One stat I like to point out is that in 2007 we were the best drawing spoon team EVER. Better than recent Pies or Blues spooners.

This means our core support is huge. Look at our home interstaters compared to Carltons in recent years. We are thousands ahead. We are frequently accused of bandwagonning but are THE BEST SUPPORTED SPOONERS EVER.

Given that FACT it makes me smile to hear us being called bandwagoners. If we are bandwaggoning but the best supported spooners EVER then wait til we are top 4 !!!
