Carlton has a valid reason... They cheated and the AFL tore them a new one setting them back years.

What is Melbournes reasoning? It's not like you had any shock retirements/trades of superstars leaving the club either. I dare say Melbournes list (minus the talented youngsters they've recently drafted) has got to be THE worst I've ever seen in my time of watching the AFL.

Let's face it, even when Melbourne were reasonable ('88, 00) they were so far off the best they were torn several new orifices in GF maulings (one a record until the magic 119 in 07). 45 years of being either really, really shit (which is their current status), and a couple of short above average stints... the question shouldn't be how did they get so bad, it should be "how did they manage to rise above shitness for a short period of time"

Ahh I see we have some aging players so in the next few years we are going to drop to the depths of Melbourne over the next 5 years right?

WRONG.

We have plenty of young talent. It's just that our side isn't so bad that we need to be playing raw 18 year olds every single week. I think you'll find we'll be competitive for at least the next 5 years. With a midfield of Cooney, Griffen, Higgins, Ward, Picken we won't be dropping down the ladder in a hurry. To top that off we'll finally have some tall forwards to kick to in Grant and Cordy with a pacy Backman in Harbrow bringing it out of defence and Hill on the wing. Reid, Wood and Stack will all make the grade and a young guy called Boumann will surprise a few. Furthermore with two father son guns to pick up next year were looking quite competitive for a while yet.

Just on Stack. He kicked 4 in his second game and the next week did nothing and was dropped for the rest of the season. Would this have happened at Melbourne?

Most of the kids I just named would have wonnamirri33 in a frenzy salivating about the next 8 premierships he will win on the back of their talent.

Honestly, nothing would give me a greater sense of joy (save a Brisbane premiership) then to see Melbourne's 'young talent' crash and burn in the next few years and really shut up these Melbourne flogs. Of course, with so many young kids in the team some are bound to not make the grade and with no experienced players or depth, it could well be another long period of mediocrity for the dees. Time will tell, I guess.
