Iv'e noticed that there are many on the Geelong board who don't really rate Ling at all. I have allways considered him in our top 10 most crucial players. Great tagger when he's played in that role... which should be more often. So i'm curious, how highly do you rate Cameron Ling?

I said 11-22, but only when he is used as a run-with player. He irritates the crap out of me when he is used as a link man in the middle, as you know he's either going to pass laterally or just bomb hospital passes into the forward line.

11- 22... when he plays in the role that he did for most of 2006. Too slow, can't kick, hasty with his possesions. Basically he is not a dangerous or damaging player

1 - 10... when he plays as a tagger, utilising his fitness to accumulate possesions later in games when other players are struggling

DING DING DING DING....give the man a cigar, couldn't have said it better myself

Totally agree. I'd grudgingly give him a spot in the 22, but he should not be immune from the axe. This year is make or break for him - Rooke is now a better tagger, and there are plenty of younger and faster midfielders coming through.

If he spent time in the seconds I wouldn't be bothered one iota.

Well said:thumbsu:
If he proves to not be up to scratch by rd4 or 5, then he's off to the magoos.

A better clubman / professional you'd be hard pressed to find!

Unfortunately, if he doesn't become a more offensive / skillful player, his days are numbered. As has been said Selwood, Gamble, Djerr, Prismall will be hot on his heels from now!

What about Tenace or Byrnes?

He might be dedicated, but so was Sean Simpson. Work ethic isn't enough at this level. If you're not up to it, you're out. Tough.

I think that if one of Tenace or Kelly step it up (all reports suggest that Kelly is training well), Ling may actually be in a bit of trouble. Add to that Prismall who should warrant 10 - 15 games and one of Varcoe/Djerrkura/Selwood/Byrnes/Mackie/Stokes pushing for selection in the mid - actually he might be in a lot of trouble. This is a gr8 thing though... Ling will be working his but off!:thumbsu:

Yeah Tenance and Brynes possibly, my point was new blood.

Anyway I'd take Ling's 06 over Tenance's 06 anyday. Kane's saving grace is he has a few years up his sleeve.

My point on best clubman etc...was just that! I wasn't giving him a teachers pet card!!

Exactly what he said^^^^

11-22 for me but another unproductive year and I think the new developing onballers will surpass him. With them coming through he will have to perform to keep his spot

This is a good question in that it encapsulates what has happened to the side over the past 3 years. In 2004 Ling was rightly B & F and in the top 50 players in the league. By 2006 he was struggling to keep his place in the selected side of a team that was travelling poorly.

A number of our players have fallen off their own standards that they set for themselves three years ago. A standard that in 2004 we still needed to improve upon even back then because we werent up to winning it...

Ling could be a good barometer of how the team goes this year. I think he will be much better than last season....top 10 for mine by the end of the season...

Yeh, excatly. Ling can play, as shown by his form in previous seasons. Last year, however, his fitness - which was his number one weapon in his role as a tagger - was down. This could have been a result of Bert leaving, and the ******** pre-season the cats had last year. Being slow and unfit, his ability to break the lines and do anything with it when he actually had the ball suffered. Obviously hurting more than previous seasons (the barometer being the redness in his face) he had less time to do anything valuable and looked for the handball or the sideways chip kick way too often. Ling is fitter this year than he was at this time last year, but if he can't recapture his past form and realise his potential, there won't be a spot for him next year.

Not only our midfielders but the rest of the competitions midfielders. Since everyone seems to agree he his in the team predominantly for his tagging, then how will he handle the new breed of fit, hard running quick midfielders.

he may only get to matchup against scotty west once or twice a season, maybe only for the next 1-2 seasons. I dread thinking about him manning up a judd type player (and these players are becoming more common).

If he is stifling the growth/performance of a player (like corey being played in the back half) by being in the 22, which i think he is, then off with his head.

Fair call I reckon there. He may be lucky to even scrape into the 22 unless he can do something quickly, Rooke is quicker and can do the job.

You can pass on the cigar, since I don't smoke, but a bundy and coke will do just nicely thanks! :D

Must agree with pretty much all the sentiments. Two years ago he was a worthy B&F and a top player in the comp. This year will tell if a better ttraining regime has helped or the game has passed him by.

yep we all pretty much agree. His fitness has always been good despite the issues of last season. He can run forever which was always his strength as a player. But his disposal and decision making really lets him down. Those sideway kicks and as someone else put so elegantly "hospital passes' are frustrating.

My fear for him is that with the development of players like Rooke, Varcoe and Stokes....and the potential of Selwood and Djerkurra......his position has to look a little shakey.

I like him though and hope he proves us all wrong this year and comes out with some really good form.

hes a top ten player for sure. its no surprise to me that his worst year as a senior player coincided with our most disappointing year in a decade.

im not sure why the coaching panel persists in playing him as a link man, when clearly his a much better man on man player. i seriously hope 2007 finds him back in that role.

Exactly. He is a good player easily in our 22. But when the coach plays him as a link player he is not very good. I think his perceived poor season is more to do with the coaching panel than Ling.

When you fumble under pressure, or handpass and kick the ball straight to the opposition, that's not due to the coach. It's just being crap.
