Next years draft is looking interesting to me. Mainly because (if I understand it correctly) we have the possibility to list Moeller and Head, and are also chasing Jaeger. There could also be an upgrade from the rookie list.

Any thoughts on how this could all pan out?

Isn't the rookie list going to go back to just six. Hopefully it stays at eight but I am pretty sure it was originally a temporary measure due to the introduction of the new clubs. If so, and depending on when/if it happens we may take less picks.

AFL rules state we need a minimum of 3 draft picks/rookie elevations.

I would imagine these would be from: Schammer, Hayden, and possibly Hinkley being delisted. I also think Pav is eligible for the veterans list next year which would free another spot on the list.

Odds are we will lose one player to GWS as well.

There are 3 third year rookies in Pearce, Shepheard and Sibosado who will need to be upgraded to the main list if we want to keep them.

So I can easily see us having potentially 5 spots to fill. If we upgrade a number of rookies/scholarship holders we could then try to trade multiple pics for a higher one or a future compensation pick.

The scholarship players count as draft selections, and I would think if we got the selection off GWS for a 17 yr old, there is the three picks. Yes Schammer, Hayden, Hinkley and possibly Grover would be in the gun. Not too many others that leap up though. If we also elevated a rookie that is 4 players we need to delist before we even get to the draft. For every draft pick we want to use, we need to delist/trade someone. It will be interesting.

The scholarship players can be placed directly on the rookie list if they agree to it. I remember the Cats did this with one of theirs. But I still think it is going to be a balancing act. Also I don't think Moller and Head available this draft, I think it is next year.

Pretty sure that it operates similar to the father/son rule. So if another club state they want the player, then we have to notify the AFL ahead of the draft that we will be picking them, and the draft pick will be an early one too - second round iirc. We can get them onto the rookie list, but given the wraps on them (Moller and Head), it doesn't look likely.

FWIW, Craig Moller was born 22-8-94, so can't be picked until next year (17 year olds could only be picked if they were born between January and April of 1993, iirc). Similar situation for Head.

But it's an interesting question re who to say goodbye to. Agree that Schammer, Hinks, Pearce and Shep will be under pressure, and that Rog and Groves will discuss retirement with club management.

Finally, I said it before but it's worth repeating: Jaeger is simply too good to be traded. The only possibility - and it's an extremely small one - is if he tells everyone he won't be playing for anyone but a WA club.

It didn't work for Des when Brisbane interviewed him (he rocked up wearing a Freo t-shirt) but it panned out for Mora.

The rule for scholarship players is that you can use your last pick in the draft. If the player agrees you can put him o the rookie list.

Pearce, Sherpheard and Sibosado are all third year rookies and can only be upgraded or delisted.

Possible Retirements are Hayden and Grover (veteran list).

Veteran list: Pavlich 2012, Mcpharlin 2013, and Sandilands 2014.

With Pavlich going on the Vets list and Grover gives one pick in the draft.

Delisting of Hinkley, and Schammer addes another 2 picks.

Bradley, and Houghton are in the line of fire too.

2 retirements and 2 delistings gives us 4 spots on the main list for upgrades and picks. Maybe, 3 picks plus an upgrade seems like logical to me.

GWS have to trade their 17 years old from the beginning of 2012 they cant keep them if they don't trade them they lose them. They never have access to them, it is similar to our situation with LLoyd. Also I think they have to be traded for players not picks but I'm not certain on this.

That's my understanding too tofushark (Including the players not picks).

I stand corrected.

The Giants are in the driver’s seat for the young gun’s services under concession guidelines similar to those that the Gold Coast received last year.

Fremantle are able to trade a player to the Giants in exchange for the right to select a 17-year-old born between January 1 and April 30 1994.

Limited to four players.

Longterm it would be great to get one of the 4 picks but it would be a ballsy decision from Bondy to trade a quality player for a 17 year old. A club like West Coast desperate for picks would probably trade anyone other than Naitanui, LeCras or Gaff and it would take a Mundy/Silvagni/Clarke to get the deal done IMO.

Houghton, sibo, Sheppard and Buco all have the skills to be on a AFL list, shame they are all injured.I was really looking forward to see them debut fo freo.I think all of them are in their third year with the club so the chances all four are retained are slim. But we need kpp and they usually take lomger to develop.

I'm pretty sure Mcphalin goes on the Vets list the same year Pavlich does.

Yup. Both born in 1981 - Pav is actually younger than Elvis (31.12 lololo) so logicially they both should be on the vet list

McPhee and Sandilands to go on the vet list the following year (1982) - no players on our list born in 1983 but 17 born in either 89, 90, 91 or 92

Is the Veterans list purely governed by age? I wouldn't have thought McPhee would be on our vets list out or something like number of games played for us or number of years on our list.. Also I question how many veterans you can potentially have on 1 list?

What are the legalities of bringing Moller and Head over next year, not unlike Gold Coast did with Swallow, to fast track some development. Obviously school commitments and the like may restrict this, it would probibly need us to confirm they will definatly be taken, something the club may not be willing to do just yet!
Silly idea or some merit?

Might want to evaluate the list at the end of the season before we decide how many picks we take.

This thread is like discussing what we spend our premiership bonus on.
