My new job has resulted in seeing the affects of drinking. If you haven't seen the episode from the latest South Park about the iphone games, watch it: it raises some obvious but staggering and scary points about the alcohol (/tobacco/prescription drug/gambling) industry that makes you consider your place in it all. Alcoholism is such a sad addiction because it hits anyone – it's not your low barrel drug or your high falutin addiction, it's lower and middle and upper class. It's destructive, pathetic, and gripping.
I've tried cutting down on my drinking a bit but it's a bit hard to judge it as an 18-23 year old. It is your social fabric. And it can bring so many good times that to ditch it seems too much. I think so long as you aren't drinking every single night, drinking by yourself, or drinking as a crutch every time something goes wrong, then you're mostly okay. Some people can drink 15-20 beers four times a week with their mates and never fall into being a pisshead, but some people just drink every night without that social interaction.
The biggest issue is I like a beer on its own merits, and after being around it for a nine hour shift, you're always going to have one on the walk home and another one at home. You can see how some people in these industries can grab six beers every night. I had the temptation to, too, at first, but then you get over that appeal. I just think many people can't, and you never want to be one of them.
