Usually Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday every week. Might get drunk once a week.

Ruining my body, the adjustment.

It really depends on who and when.

On Tuesday night I had a jug and another pint of cider, but that's a bit more than I'd usually have.

At parties I tend to get on the mixed spirits. Vodka and Coke/Sprite/Cranberry/OJ.

Just don't do Vodka/Sprite more than a few times in one night, far too gassy. Wasn't a pleasant night out when I made that mistake hahaha.

Being 19 going on 20, giving up alcohol is huge for me. Haven't had a sip of it for about 8 months now, and best decision I've made. It's good for my wallet, my health and my decision making.

I drink usually Friday & Saturday nights, then have the occasional mid week session or Sunday session. TBH I don't understand why people wouldn't drink unless they were an alcoholic, or had history of it.

Any non-drinkers I know who pull the old 'I don't need to be drunk to have fun' are either full of it or sit there judging everyone else...

Yeah I can't say I understand the not drinking at all mindset. I can understand not wanting to get drunk or blind, or drink regularly, but to say no I won't drink at all just seems a bit weird. What's a glass of wine or a beer every now and then going to do to you?

8 months as a young person in Australia is really impressive, especially if you're a former drinker.

Was never a heavy drinker anyway but thank you :)

For me personally it's about the calories and the damage to my body. I'm not a calorie counter or dieter at all, but it seems silly to me I make such healthy choices with food and then ruin it with a few soft drink mixes/cocktails on the weekend. Even if I only do that once a month or once a half year it's still unnecessary when I don't like the taste of alcohol either compared to water, so what's the point? I can legitimately have fun without it and I don't make a fool of myself in public.

I'm probably 3-4 times a week. I can't really go overboard these days due to work and having a baby. That said, with the standard drink recommendations I'm probably well over. Doesn't it work out to something like 3 beers equals binge drinking?

This is where the health nuts shoot themselves in the foot. If you say something like 3 beers is binge drinking people will not listen nor pay attention to the message.

Given up forever or taking a break? Pretty good effort considering socially it is harder to be a non drinker then it is to be a drinker.

Only other point would be to get drunk/unwind. Yet if that's not your go then probably no reason to. Best running your own race.

Given up forever. I've also seen what it does to people, they become a completely different person. It's just not for me personally.
My mates love it: guess who's permanently the deso? Yes, me. Lifts all round haha.

Usually sunday-wednesday are the only nights where I don't drink anything (just sunday and monday if it's been a shit week). But on the week nights that I do drink I usually just have 4 beers since I have to get up the next day.

On weekends if I'm going out I'll usually end up writing myself off on friday and saturday night. Thankfully that isn't every weekend though, in fact I haven't done that in 3 weeks atm. But still been having a few quiet beers at the weekends.

So I said more than 10, sounds unhealthy when you say it like that

Might have a handful during a session every third or fourth week on average.

This is always in social circles, the only time I ever drink alone is on a flight.

this is what i'm trying to achieve. gone cold turkey for about 3 weeks now (early days) and already have noticed a massive difference.
i'm happier, i feel healthier, not spending as much money, making good progress in the gym.

Yeah, gym progress was something that underlined it all for me too.

Good job :thumbsu:

As long as you're not an angry drunk, drink often and alone or are prone to grog-related mischief like shopping trolley racing with your mates down a big hill and ending up with broken bones there isn't much wrong with getting on the piss and having a laugh with your mates and/or random strangers who happen to stray into orbit.

I don't know if it's different with you vonn, but I'm in my mid thirties, been enjoying alcohol immensely for all of my adult life (and for quite a bit of my teens!) and feel no real need to slow down or quit. People understand, and I find myself surrounded by folk of a like mind. I know it's different strokes for different folks though - was the grog a bit of a problem for you?

As for hangovers - drink a few pints of water before you go to bed and bang! No headache the next morning.

Well alcohol was never an issue for me, I'd drink it once every few months because I'm not into the whole partying/getting drunk with randoms culture that people my age tend to have. I'm seriously boring, but I'd rather dinner with close friends or hanging out at home.
Anyway, my dad is early forties and a smart and nice person but he can't handle even a glass of red wine anymore. I'm not saying he becomes violent, just angry and that's not something I want to ever go through or put others through.
That, and I never liked the taste and it took a fair bit to get me drunk so it was costly.
My mum is also early 40s and she still handles her alcohol fine like you so it definitely is personal. I don't begrudge anyone who drinks because its their choice but also given I slave away at the gym too I want to see more prominent results :)
Drinking was just never a big deal for me so I'm surprised and also touched at the reaction my post caused because it wasn't a huge a sacrifice as some were thinking. When I said 'huge' for me I was more referring to the fact all my friends do it pretty much weekly, and that the drinking culture is huge for people my age, not so much that I had a drinking problem but I should have made that clearer.

Alcohol is expensive, unhealthy and addictive. It helps you make poor, impulsive choices. Hang overs make you feel sick, or at best lazy. Water helps, but most people still feel off the next morning. Abstaining seems to be a pretty good decesion.

If people are just enjoying enjoy 1-2 beers or a glass of wine none of what I've said applies. But for most young people that's not the way the drinking culture here works.

vonn

i've got a 21st tonight with alcohol provided and a lot of my mates will be drinking. to avoid temptation i've decided to drive and be the deso.
how many times have you been tempted to drink in your 8 months off? doesn't sound like this has happened much, but what tips could you give to resist the social urge to drink?

'No.'

That's it haha.

Nobody should feel compelled to drink. Go-with-the-flow can be a prick of a thing when you're young. It definitely wasn't a criticism of your choice vonn, so apologies if it came across that way. Like most choices, it's a command decision for you and you alone to make.

I'm pretty happy with my lot in life - I enjoy social drinking immensely and coming from an Irish background the alcohol content is already in the blood so to speak.

But yeah. To each their own:thumbsu:
