How'd Varcoe do tonight?

Just wondering how Varcoe did tonight didnt get to see the game...

kicked a goal. Looks stronger and made a few nice tackles. Showed a bit of flair now and then but overall wasn't a huge contributor to the game.

9 touches, 2 marks, 8 tackles, I goal....66 DT points

noticed a real improvement from 2007, although I still think the side is going to be very hard for him to hold a spot in. noticed him running around the centre a lot more tonight and was still involved in around the goals as well. Unselfishly gave off a goal to Byrnes as well. Just needs to get a bit more of the footy around the middle and will be a good small forward capable of having spurts in the midfield aka stokes.

Got to get rid of the pr0n star moustache....

Provided great forwardline pressure which has been sorely missing. I just don't know how you fit him in when Chapman comes back. Incidently I reckon Byrnes is a little in front of him at the moment.

Pffft, the pr0n star moustache is the best thing about him!

Agree that Brynes is probably ahead of him, and then Gamble ahead of Brynes. However, with a bit of work could turn into a very important player. Problem is, hard to see him getting a consistent position in the side enough to build up that development.

In my opinion Varcoe is too unselfish, he had about 5 goal assists tonight, sometimes i think his just gotta take a chance and take people on, and have more shots at goal.

Ugh it is so annoying. I am tough on him and this is why. First he has to work on his toughness and second imagine his influence and effect if he could get it 16 times going on those stats? Sixty-six points from 9 touches with only one goal is quite amazing. GOT TO GET MORE OF IT THOUGH TRAV!

Disagree. Byrnes ahead of Gamble at the moment for me. With Gamble in and no Byrnes, our forwardline is too slow and cumbersome. Byrnes provides something we desperately need. Had a good game tonight did Shannon.

Every AFL should have a Varcoe. A player is sacrifices his possession game for the assists.

Noticed he handed of atleast three or four goals and to lay 8 tackles is great. I think people are a bit critical of Trav because he doesn't get a lot of the ball but its what he does when he doesn't have it? Who was his direct opponent for the night? How many touches did they get? Would love to see Varcoe on a little bitch of a backman who racks up easy touches such as a Bowden, a Gram or a Gilbee. Would shut down oppositions drive out of the backline and maintain possession of the ball inside Geelong's 50.

Gamble > Varcoe > Byrnes...

I like varcoe alot & think he is a good fit for our forward line... too bad we got like 3 players (varcoe, byrnes, gamble) for that single spot

Gamble is more lead/mark type forward. Bit like Ryan O'Keefe. So not exactly the same type IMHO.

He wasn't to bad. When he chases, he's lightning. Just has to complete the tackle a bit more tho. A bit of a Leon Davis but younger. Doesn't do a hell of a lot, but when he does, its exciting to watch.

Must say tho, I'm also loving the Mo he's got going. A bit of Undercover Brother in the Geelong forward line.

Trav was great. 8 tackles, a goal, and many involvements in other attacks. He improved on his game against Collingwood, and the only way he'll keep improving is if he strings games together, so keep him in for the Roos match.

I was very happy with his performance.

He layed a heap of tackles, ran down numerous players, kicked a goal, gave one away and created opportunities for others.
His defensive pressure was brilliant.

He obviously doesn't win a lot of the ball, but he doesn't waste it, so one of Trav's touches is worth two of many other players.

The Ned Flanders special above his top lip is a cracker too ;)

I thought he had a good game... Much better than Byrnes IMO, ____ ya stats and his 3 goals in the goal square... Byrnes would be good if he could kick.

As for who remains when Chapman comes back, i think it will come down to who offers more variety.

Byrnes' is definitely more similar to Chapman's than Varcoe's is, so i'd probably keep Trav in the team.

Not sure if we can have Chapman, Kelly, Byrnes and even Stokes playing the lead up flanker/midfielder role, whereas with Varcoe there, we have a point of difference.

Do you think Geelong might trade Varcoe next year? Pretty tough side to get a game in. I know the Crows were very keen on him. If he was to go, what would he be worth?

I'd be shocked if we actively sought to trade him.

We've put years into his development, and he provides us with a very unique point of difference.
We don't have any other real crumbers, let alone ones with great skills and superb defensive skills.

The only way Travis will leave is if he wants to return to Adelaide.

Yeah ill agree with you there, just couldn't see it happening. IMO if chappy is fit byrnes to be dropped. Varcoe could add some unpredictability to the F50 and midfield and isnt afraid to chase down an opponent for an inside 50 tackle, which is defiantly a good thing to have. From what ive got here that is a terrific game by varcoe would defiantly love him to kick some assists into goals just to cement a spot in the team, he needs to be ahead of byrnes and gamble for that spot.

Thought he had some nice touches - I'd like to see him get a bit more opportunity.
At the same time I thought Byrnsie was good also. I prefer them both to Gamble at this stage.

Thought he was great. It's not all about possessions. When Varcoe touches it 10 times he sets up 5 goals (if we can kick straight). Defensive pressure is brilliant, and he has far more effect on the game than stats alone will tell.

I really hope he can get a good run in the side this season.
