Hi Guys,
I know there's been a lot of topics on this, but it gets difficult to search through to get everyone's thoughts. The following is my hypothetical end of year list management, based on how it stands now. If everyone else would care to let us know there ideas I'd be keen to read them, as I'm sure others would.

Assumptions

At this stage to do a hypothetical list management you need to make a number of assumptions. Firstly the ladder. For the purpose of this hypothetical I will have the end of year ladder as follows...

Adelaide
West Coast
St.Kilda
Melbourne
Collingwood
Sydney
Fremantle
Western Bulldogs
----------------
Geelong
Brisbane
Richmond
Port Adelaide
Kangaroos
Hawthorn
Essendon
Carlton

I will also assume players general draft number expectations based loosely upon my Best Available Draft (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=257067) combined with my expectation of where they will actually go.

There will be other assumptions that will become apparent.

just wandering why you would delist batson then pick him again as a rookie?

why wouldn't you just retain him?

it's only second year this year so he would still have another year as a rookie.

where is sam sheldon?

i know this is hypothetical but teague will be there for 2007, no point trying to convince yourself he won't be.

surely we could do better than travis gasper in PSD. better off keeping pick 35 and getting meesan in PSD

getting rid of stevens will mean that murphy gets the no1 tagger or maybe we want gibbs to get the no1 tagger each week. we seriously lack depth in the midfield and getting rid of stevens will not address that problem.

i think its international rookies can have 3 consecutive years on the rookie list
but home grown can only have 2 then they need to be promoted or delisted. if delisted then they can be picked up again but go into the general pool.

Why would you draft Travis Gasper and then not have him in your best 22?
How about him at CHB then or target say a Goddard instead. Has he signed yet?

Didnt jesse smith just play a real good game for the bullants.... cant see him been the first to go on the rookie choppin block!!

I'd take pick 12 for stevens proberly, but absolutely nothing less... maybe even another pick after that - but i doubt collingwood would go for it.

Remember trading stevens will mean more pressure on others and yet another experienced player gone!

id be happy to see de luca go aswell!

You only get two years as a rookie.

International Rookies get three.

If a Gooddard-type became available then obviously you would target them. It's almost impossible to tell who will be both out of contract and not traded beforehand so that's a stab in the dark. I know Gaspar is out of contract and has been playing with distinction at WAFL level at CHB. He's also having his contract end this year and looks unlikely to be retained.

Chance Bateman, Michael Rischitelli, Matt Moody, Travis Gaspar, Brendan Goddard, Justin Sherman and the majority of the 2004 draft class would also be coming up. There's a lot more, but without being a player manager or a football club it's impossible to know them all unless you kept meticulous records. I think you'd offer around 350,000 to 400,000 for Sherman if you thought you could get him. Would totally fit our needs.

Yeah that's true, but the kids are looking up to him for advice at the moment and you'd hate to see some of his current habits creep into the team.

I'd say Petterd, for example, would be close to Stevens level within 3 years, a point in time where we'll be in a position to mount somewhat of a challenge.

OZBomb, I have been calling for some proactivity from this club over the past 3 preseasons to no avail with every excuse been thrown up when we have come up short.

The only way to get yourself out of this mess is to be proactive and get 1 or 2 or 3 players using the pre-season draft as leverage. Players such as Power/Kossie (thank God now)/Bartel/Salopek/Goddard have all been discussed previously without us been able to land 1, let alone 2.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Clubs know who is out of contract and when. They should be discussing their futures asap and ensuring they are "happy" and "keen" to make the change come years end. Salopak was there to be gobbeled up last year and we failed miserable. Goddard the year before even though he wanted to come. His out of contract again, hasn't signed and might still have some Carlton in him. Get in his ear now and make sure we get him or someone of similar status come the end of this year.

No excuses, use the system and hurt the basterds that laugh in our face, just like we used to previously. Lets hope Essendon aren't better prepared either.

A lot of assumptions! But I suppose this is what this thread is about.

Just curious about the numbers here. First we have #28 retired for a year, then we have Teague switching to #28 and #33 retired for a year.

No point to switching Teague's number, and neither #28 or #33 will be retired because Prender and Houla aren't premiership players.

Edit: Nice effort though. :)

why don't we just delist him and if he wants to hang around the club and still be the good samaritan then good on him.

Sorry, I was just running out of the office for a minute and rushed the proof read. I'll correct it now.

The point is even if we delist him his salary still goes onto next years Salary Cap. I'm not against trading on his ability but I think around the club with so many young guys, he would be of real benifit.

i don't see what benifit a slow half back who will play the whole year at the bullants be on our club regardless of his work ethic off the ground.

Can't help thinking it would leave a bad impression amongst the rest of the playing group.

What I can't make my mind up about is the Captain and Vice Captain. Lance is a obvious favourite but I would really like to see a longterm appiontment made, ala Sticks.

Whats your thoughts?

Do we bite the bullet?

it would be great if we had a player ready to step into the sticks type scenario, but we don't have anyone who is demanding to be our next leader.

IMO we don't have anyone in the 22-26 yo category who is ready.
we may be best having lance as captain and in 4 years time have him hand it over to one of today's kids (murphy, walker, kennedy etc)

also football has changed, sticks was a man when he came to the club, these days we recruit kids.

Not a bad 22 however I would still have Balackwell ahead of Bentick. Has more pace and more flair. Also think Setanta and Bower are good options for defense next year. Overall a good list though. All we need now is discipline and confidence.

no one seems to be jumping outa of their skin to be our next captain. No way stevens deserves it so Lance would be the obvious choice. hopefully in 3 or 4 years time maybe a murphy, kennedy or even walker might be capable of taking on the job.

Brett thornton's form this year has been encouraging and he seems like a player with great character who could come in the leadership group and push for the job in the next year or two.

If out of contract, the club must target either Rischeteli or Sherman, both will be great players.

Brisbane certainly wouldn't let them go through to the PSD or other drafts, so it would need to be in a trade. Possibly involve Stevens?

But having said that, I can't see either of them leaving. The Lions would be desperate to sign them both, and I don't think either would want to leave.
