Alright, let's consider this hypothetical situation:

After a hard-fought win against an injury revenged Dockers, the Collingwood Football Club boards the plane home to Melbourne to rest up and prepare for the following round.

1 hour and 30 minutes into the flight, the Qantas jet hits unexpected turbulence- forcing the plane into crash landing.... None of the crew or passengers survive.

What would happen to the league if this was to happen mid-season? Anyone ever thought about this? Would the season be called off? Would the team field rookies? Would we see draft handouts on the scale of Gold Coast and GWS to get the team back on its feet?

I always think about this too, call me a sicko or whatever, it's not like I would ever want it to happen at all, shit I feel bad for players from other teams when they get an injury, but I've always wondered what they would do. I don't think the game would ever recover fully. It would be one of the worst things to happen in sport anywhere in the world (yes I know it has happened to at least one College team before, probably others too)

They wouldn't cancel the entire season, maybe a week or two to allow organisation and ceremonies. I'm sure there is a plan in place for something of this nature.

there's definatley been a thread on this, but it was several years ago. possibly multiple threads.

^ What if Torino made it to the final? Surely respect gets thrown out of the window there?

Was thinking about a similar-ish situation the other day. What happens if, through a terrorist attack or some horrible disaster, a team loses a fair majority of its hardcore supporter base in one foul swoop? Something goes terribly wrong at a Collingwood home game vs. GWS and tens of thousands are left dead. Does the club die, will opposition clubs and supporters prop it up, do young kids find it romantic to support it?

A macabre hypothetical and fortunately one we'd be likely to see in this country but interesting nonetheless.

The Zambian national football team were in a plane crash about 20 years ago and all the players and coaches on board were killed.

Unlikely it would ever happen here but it would be devastating for a club and their supporters to have a whole team wiped out.

I always think about terrorist threats at a packed MCG.

There'd be some serious repercussions to that. And it wouldn't be just in terms of mourning, it'd ruin the stability of the league (not having the 'G would ruin the fixture list).

LOL thousands dead and you're worried about the MCG:eek:.

In Australia the probablity of an air disaster of this magnitude is next to zero. We've never had an air disaster. The standard of safety is very high. The media tries to tell you otherwise. Then to add the probability of an entire football team being on the aircraft....its as close to zero as you can get. It wont happen. You have more chance of winning $70 million dollars three times in a row.

People have been watching too many air crash shows....

Actually, Torino did win the title. The team was at the top of the table at the time of the crash, and the youth team won enough of the remaining fixtures in the season to take the Scudetto.

The whole nation was in mourning, because the Torino side also had most of the Italian national team at the time. When something like that happens, winning and losing doesn't have much importance.

Correct.. Though the following year they began toi struggle and the club has never been strong since despite winning a tittle in the 70s

Manchester United however were not treated to the same courtesy, though more senior players survived than Torino they still fell sharply.

The league would go on with maybe 1 week off out of respect but there is too much money involved for it to stop.

Collingwood would probably forfeit the year, which brings up a question on membership/sponsership and whether its viable. Some members would want refunds because now they cant watch their team while others would forfeit

No doubt sponsers would want money back which they already wouldve spent.

Playing a terrible side is an interesting point and plausable, in fact the more I think about it the more likely it is.
