It's got nothing to do with my personal health ...

The media has gone over the top with the "former No.1" description - Lleyton Hewitt has done nothing since he lost the crown a few years ago. He has embarrassed us time and time again and (for his ability) he has underachieved in that respect. Was very lucky to have scrapped a first-round win against qualifier Michael Russell, I didn't watch the last two sets, but Russell seemed like he was in control of the contest.

He has dropped out out of the top 10, and rightly so - Lift your game, Lleyton!

Your thoughts?

I haven't heard anyone really talk him up besides the idiots in the media. I am a big Hewitt fan but myself I also think nearly everyone thinks his best is behind him and can't see him having much impact at future Grand Slams.

At the end of the day he has won two Grand Slams which now a days is a huge effort given how tennis has developed over the years. They are a lot harder to win now a days then they were in years gone past. I don't really see how you can say he has under achieved given his ability and size, perhaps the big dissapointment was not winning the match against Safin a few years back. Besides thats its been a great career.

Disagree. He's 25, has recently become a dad, had injuries, taken some time off, and only played a handful of games in the last 6 months. When this happens your ranking drops. He is still a great player. Was rusty last night, but as i said, only played a handful of games / injuries.

Lets wait and see how he goes this year. Last year he made a 3rd rd and two Quarters in the majors. Quarters being last 8. This made him, i'm guessing, about the 5th or 6th most successful player in all 4 majors last year. Not bad for a guy who has a dud year to be this well performed in the only tournaments that matter.

Lets' see how he goes this year. I'm betting he will get back to top 5.

Not a chance, Federe, Nadal, Roddick will be top 5 for sure, and that leaves 2 spots left, and there are otehr players much better then Hewitt to take them. Hewitt is past it, doesn't have the game to challenge the top players anymore

You may be right. But Hewitt has always managed to fight his way back. Last night is a prime example staring you right in the face. He was gone. Literally.

surely you could make a better point then that. What are the deficiencies in his game? What do other players have he dosent? Who are these other contenders? etc etc

Why?
He doesnt have any real weapons that the other top players have;) argue it all you like, but its teh truth

Depends what you consider weapons. If your talking a massive forehand...no.

Hewitts weapons:

1. Return of Serve
2. Court Speed
3. Fitness
4. Attitude
5. Improving Serve (Has been working on it for the past year and it is getting bigger. Note increased Aces over the last few years)
6. Improving net player (Another area he works on and is seeing results)
7. Backhand

Hewitt has had plenty of injuries/disruptions marraige/kid issues that have seen his ranking slip. He is at 19 not because of results on court, rather that he hasn't been playing to defend points. As i said in another post, he was the 5th (at a guess) best performed player in 06 at the majors.

He is 25. If he stays fit, he will become a top 5 player easily. I wont be a Woodforde and say that he is capable of being number 1 again and beating Federer, but top 5 easily.

Mate give us some specifics here

Specifics? He has no real weapons in his game, forehand, backhand, serve are nothing special, most of the top players have at least on of these attributes, he has excellent court coverage and determination, but that will only get you so far NOW, what he did when he was younger is totally irrelivant, teh game has changed so much it isn't funny.
How about you give me some specifics, your asking me for some without adding anything yourself. Or is it you can't, because I am right:rolleyes:

Changed since 2006, when he made the last 8 in 2 of 4 majors? BTW - His backhand is special!

Federer's backhand is special. Hewitt's backhand is nothing of note.

In fact his record at the Australian Open isn't flash. He has lost 4 out of 5 marathons - must be the courts doing or so he says.

All talk, no walk.

The problem with hewitt's backhand is give him the slice backhand with no pace and he will 60% of the time dump it in the bottom of the net.People have figured out hewitt's game now.Hewitt feeds off opponents pace but he cannot generate pace of his own.He struggles to change direction on his backhand as well.

Who are these other contenders? etc etc

Blake
Ljubicic
Davydenko
Baghdatis
Nalbandian
Murray
Ancic
Djokovic
Haas
Berdych
Safin

And that's just to start with. Lil' Lleyton won't get into the top ten let alone the top five.

He will drop out of the top 20 within 2 months and never return.

Look at that list db10 has, so so so so so much better players than Hewitt.

He can get back into the top 10 but he has a big job in front of him. There are fairly big question marks over a number of those players you have listed. Some while only been around a short while haven't proven themselves in the big tournament, Hewitt has. Plus with injuries over the year anything can happen.

Hewitt is better than all 5 of these guys.
Mr "Come On" will be back in 07. Just wait and see. Go Rocky!
