Which one?

Rank the studio albums through to Seventh Son with favourite songs.

1. Powerslave (Aces High, Powerslave, ROTAM)
2. Killers(Purgatory, IOM/Wrathchild, Gengis Khan).
3. S/T (Prowler, Phantom of the Opera, Transylvania).
4. Piece of Mind (The Trooper, Where Eagles Dare, Revelations).
5. Somewhere in Time (Alexander the Great, CSIT, Wasted Years).
6. The Number of the Beast (Hallowed be thy Name, Invaders, 22 AA).
7. Seventh Son (Infinite Dreams, the Clairvoyant, Evil that Men Do).

To be honest, 1 through to 5 can change pending my mood.

TNOTB has arguably the best Maiden song in HBTN though the albums either side of it are much stronger. By SS, quality started to drop off.

Rank the studio albums through to Seventh Son with favourite songs.

Powerslave - Powerslave, honourable mention Flash Of The Blade (creative peak, flawless)
Piece Of Mind - To Tame A Land, hm Where Eagles Dare (not as polished as PS but a serious rival for top billing)
The Number Of The Beast - Hallowed Be Thy Name, hm The Prisoner (breakthrough album)
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, hm The Evil That Men Do (concept album but very well done)
Iron Maiden - Prowler, hm Sanctuary* (very respectable debut)
Killers - Murders In The Rue Morgue, hm Twilight Zone* (lacklustre follow-up)
Somewhere In Time - Wasted Years, only track I really enjoy from this album (synth + forced vocals, pass)

* US version

Twilight Zone is a killer track but I left it off. Don't like Alexander the Great? Some killer soloing. Love it.

Alone among the "epic" album-closers, I actually dislike ATG and find it tedious.

He met King Darius again
And crushed him again

Serious fans will shoot me, but Maiden's solos aren't particularly memorable IMO (perhaps because it's Steve Harris' band!). I generally perceive the songs as unified "slabs" of sound unless actually listening for the solo.

There's a lot of hipster doofusism going on lately, and it occurs to me that many flogs on here would be unaware of the work of the great Mick Thomas, of the brilliant Melbourne band Weddings Parties Anything (WPA).

However it's high time the Bay recognised the contribution to music of this great Victorian, and there is no doubt that this is the only man who could possibly be annointed the Bard of the Bay.

WPA's Grand final Eve concerts at the corner in Richmond are legendary and a pilgrimage for many.

Irish folk is clearly a massive influence on WPA, their big band renditions of songs like The Woman of Ireland are an epic event.

Oh, and the poor bastard is a massive Saints fan. Probably posts on the Bay.
