Far out I miss that guy. Such a gun when bowling at the end of the innings, with his slowler balls.

What held him back from playing test matches/consistent high level odis? Never understood why he was dropped in 2004, after his best summer in ages in aussie colours.

nup. just idolised the guy back in the day.

Yeah...a bit like Eddie! Who also supported Collingwood! If you happen to blame Bracken for ending Mick Lewis' career then...

To get back on topic, Symonds' rise as a player during and after the 03 WC probably helped lead to Harvey's axing.

actually have been a fan of bracken all along, but am wondering whether or not he'll get back into the odi side.

just reckon harvey reached his best in 03/04, but was then discarded on the quiet for a continually underachieving (certainly at the time) watson. prefer ij harvey.

I think it was from a Steve Waugh book or Gillys that said he had all the talent but didn't want to work hard like like everyone else.

Wicked fielder and bowler especially at the death

rubbish with the bat for an all rounder, did open the innings for a 70odd iirc

I think he just floated away, didnt seem to like hard work and was a casualty of the youth push for the next world cup at the time

didn't he play domestic in south africa ??

he still holds the record of most odi's without playing a test for australia (james hopes is closing in though)

A bit of a wasted player on his potential.
Im in the UK and he was presenting the Australia v India series from the UK studios as a special comments man. He now has the most unusual accent I've ever heard, it is a cross between Australian, English and South African, and he changes between the 3 mid-sentence without realising!

I think he quit Victoria, wanted to play county cricket in England and then something happened with his visa, so he went to play domestic Cricket in South Africa, then returned back to England.

He never made an ODI fifty his highest score was 48* and never took a 5 fer.

Fantastic First -Class stats:

8409 runs @ 34.60.
425 wickets @ 27.51, best bowling of 8/101.

One of the more over hyped and over rated players to play for Australia, Shane Watson of the late 90's/early 2000's.

THe old 3-way allrounder battle between Harvey, Symonds and Shane Lee was a staple for about 5 years there.

He was a match winner on his day! best slower ball in cricket

2003 TVS Cup Final in India, took 4 wickets in about 9 balls or something to win us the game.

I was thinking the same thing just the other day, when I was watching the 03 world cup highlights dvd, in the game against Holland he bowled the best slower ball I'v ever seen. :thumbsu:

Made 72* one game opening. Shit of a bloke.

I also loved his ability to throw down the stumps with either arm.

Last I heard he was playing in South Africa, or somewhere obscure?

Made an appearance in the ICL (Rebel comp that half the Pakistan team will be from this summer) last I saw.

'The Freak'

Loved to watch him play. Was the best fielder off his own bowling and could throw with both arms pretty decently. His batting was pretty powerful but very inconsistent.

Remember one innings in perth for the aussies, he smashed about 40 runs off about 20 deliveries.

Was apparently pretty lazy in regard to batting in the nets and relied on natural ability.

I remember the opening game of the VB Series against India back in 03/04 at the MCG.

Changed the game back in the aussies favour, brilliant run out of his own bowling. :thumbsu:

Just too inconsistent at international level. would've walked into any other ODI side or Test side even. if he were from another country. ala Michael Bevan & Stuart Macgill. :footy:

Wasn't Bevan's downfall in tests that he couldn't play the short delivery and was thus hardly picked after his brief first stint?
